Which edition/translation of this should I get? I've heard pic related has poor formatting and a bad translation?
Also is there a website that can help with this process? I can never just buy a book because there's always someone arguing about the different editions and it's annoying having to scour through amazon reviews (which I don't really trust) and random threads on this board to find answers.
Also any other Camus books that are highly recommended? I'm entry level /lit/ and I've only read The Stranger so far.
On the topic of Camus how would fans of his rank The Plague versus his more noteworthy works... Asking b/c I have heard so much good about Camus but while reading the plague I was utterly bored and felt like I was forcing myself through it for some pay off that couldn't possibly be worth the drawl... I put it down but recently got a copy of OP's book.
That's the only English translation I've ever seen.
Finally getting around to Dostoyevsky, which translations of Crime and Punishment are worth reading?

garnett.

If you can find a revised Garnett translation, that's great.
McDuff is good.
I read Monas and enjoyed it.
P&V are only liked by Russian academics who enjoy accurate literalism and people who don't know what they are talking about
Garnett or McDuff
I've been having trouble deciding myself.

Fuck off.
Does anyone else hate how it's impossible to be a classy /sff/ fan any more?
Where are the days of Tolkein and Wells, noble men who wrote deep philosophical tales and characters in thrilling fictional worlds.
Now /sff/ is vidya, movies, D&D and LARPing shit. I'm sure it's no less fun for people but it's certainly much less classy.
I just want to discuss literature and ideas, why am I forced into a group with these excitable idiots.

You don't. Egoist-anarchism is not egoistic: it is spooked.
Even being an egoist is ultimately spooked. Stirner said as much.
The only thing to do is what you please. This might appear to be spooky as fuck, or it might not, but it doesn't matter because caring about such things is spooked.
For example, you might feasibly join a nationalist death squad if that's what got your socks off. Or become an ascetic, whatever.
>>8603183
What if joining Egoist anarchism gets my socks off?
>>8603186
Then it's egoistic.
However, you'd almost certainly have to build it from the ground up, unless you happen to be Italian, in which case you have to build it from slightly above the ground.
Also, dealing with the law's going to be a bitch. You're despooked, so you don't care about following or defiantly not following those fascist pigs, but presumably you'll want to be illegalist if you want to go egoist-anarchism.

Can someone explain to me what he meant by Eternal Recurrence?
>>8602952
>Play it again, sam.
>Ok, but FYI you should have enjoyed it as much as possible the first time, you slut.
Time and space are both infinite, given enough time, anything that can happen will happen, and any change, whether progress or degeneration is only a temporary flux. Even your own death is only a temporary change. Wait long enough and somebody indistinguishable from you will be born, and experience the same things.
Because of this you should man up and stop complaining. All the things you hate will happen an infinite amount of times, If you can't live with them, then that's a weakness on your part. Hoping that they change is an improper response because in the grand scheme of things, nothing changes.
Or something like that. If I'm wrong I'd appreciate a better explanation.

Is an English degree from Stanford a waste of time?
>>8601800
occasionally
>>8601800
English degrees and all like it won't get you a job and you can study them independently now. Whats the point? You can gain the same amount of knowledge for free on your own as any Stanford course.
>>8601816
First of all, an English degree from a top 10 university on the planet is going to land you a job somewhere. Maybe a BA from Mediocre State won't get you the internship at the cushy publishing firm, but a BA from Brown or another elite school will.
Secondly, unless you're the rare autodidact with powerful connections, discipline, free time to study and practice, and a source of fast and useful feedback, elite universities are going to be more helpful when it comes to getting published than bumming it own your own.
Agents are looking for the Stanford graduate who has the blessing of his nationally acclaimed professors and a great manuscript, not some no-name dropout of a second tier state school with a great manuscript. Sad but true.
