Hello /lit/
I'm looking for a book that is similar in style and theme to American Psycho. I've already read Ellis' other books, but they're not as great.
Can you give me some recommendations?
Thanks.
DeLillo's Americana. The first half is basically American Psycho meets Mad Men, minus gore.

Why is anything that places emphasizes on muh horrors of conforming xD so emberassing by default?
>>8601633
What do you mean?
Congrats on Satan get.
Of course it's accessible. It's a book and is a pretty popular one. Children read that book.
>>8600666
Fitting get. It's very accessible, I just wouldn't take it seriously as Nietzsche got BTFO by Tolstoy and others over his ideas.
It is accessible, but unless you want to end up with a fucked up interpretation of Nietzsche, you should read the prerequisites first.
I've been working on this paragraph for the better half of the morning, but something still seems off about it. I'd appreciate thoughts / ideas about what feels "wrong" about it to you.

We live within these walls where lambs and wolves cross seas together, where hydras mark the beginnings and angels the ends. Mediums massage our minds while Orwellian words make thoughts their dinner. A spirit sets sail for Ithica and arrives centuries after in Dublin, as from a cave on a sinking island, a frightful army marches. Sabatons thrash through the rising water, as Scots and Danes drown themselves in tragedy; beyond them floats a wizard’s hat… a coffin gowned in daisies… a painting of a girl in white, opening a door. For better or for worse, our history is told in stories. And somewhere in the middle of it all, a professor returns from the cusp of death.

>For better or for worse, our history is told in stories. And somewhere in the middle of it all, a professor returns from the cusp of death.
That sort of abrupt switch, record scratch, sounds like parody now. Also "a professor"? Who cares about a "professor", and who cares about "a" professor?
>>8600728
It's linked to a novel, of which the professor is the main character. Taken in isolation, I agree that it makes the paragraph sound abrupt, but it makes more sense once put into context.
I was thinking though that the start of the paragraph seemed a bit bulky, or didn't flow well enough. Did you get that sense reading it?
It's "Ithaca". Remove the "For better or for worse".
I think "a professor" is fine, don't know why the anon above me minds it so much.
What is your opinion on Dumas?
Did you mean DumBasS?
Genre hack. Not saying he's terrible tho.
Le Comte de Monte Cristo was my favourite book growing up so I'd say a very favourable opinion of him. That's the only book I've read from him although I know about Les Mousquetaires and so forth
Can anyone recommend a good book for my girlfriend to get her into /lit/ ?

What are you reading for?
Reading is in the writing, OP
Pic related, it's you.
I read for fun, feels and knowledge.
And to not end up as a fucking waffle waitress.
Daily reminder Augustus murdered Virgil and interpolated his own lines into the Æneid.

So you're going to be doing this daily, then?

But literally every line of the Aeneid is a perfect masterpiece. Nobody could have interpolated a single line, it would be very obvious.
If you want to use to reasoning of the Muslins the Aeneid has a better claim on divine authorship than their Al Coran.

So I have paid an editor that I found out is this raging sjw. She got triggered by my manuscript saying my story represents the white patriarchy, is sexist and misogynist. She msg'd me a few with a long and hateful rant. For example, my book has a couple women characters and she said I have no right to write women. So I told her, 'please stop working on it, keep the money. You didn't connect to it, it was wrong for you.' Well that set her off even further, saying how she's gonna send thorough notes and I will just have to accept it. WTF do I do, knowing that this hateful woman is going to be ripping my piece apart unfairly? I believe she is getting off on having this power over me.
Yeah that happened
>>8600369
Obviously you insert all her notes as proper footnotes in the manuscript, make sure she's signed away all rights to her notes, and get it published as a brilliant self-aware post-modern pastiche.
>>8600369
Get a lawyer, send cease and desist, get a new editor.
What are some good books for socially anxious/retarded people?
Pic unrelated obviously
The greeks

Watched the TED talk the guy did about this subject, seemed like it's a state only entered by skilled people who are being sufficiently challenged, I don't see how that helps.
Hey /lit/, /v/ here. I'm looking for some books on becoming a better writer. Also, I need ways of increasing my vocabulary without just studying a dictionary.
Can any of you help me?
>>8600345
>ways of increasing my vocabulary without just studying a dictionary
it's called reading. read the starter kit, read the top 100, read.
where do you go mentally when you've completely transcended morality, superstition, and realize that everything that could be considered important to a human being is all part of imagination? I mean, once you start getting into sartre territory, it starts to seem counter productive, to say every "thought" or "thing" is just an abstract concept and we don't really "know" anything. At that point you might as well just lay down and become a vegetable or die. We need to go deeper, lit. Is there a book, preferably an entertaining fiction that will show me that way?

Couples by John Updike. Having realized the meaninglessness of everything, you can finally enjoy good and very shallow prose.

Idealism is literally baby's first philosophy and no credible thinker actually believes in it. And then we have you...
Get back to us when you've learned about realism and are ready to sit at the big kids table.
Good translations for Dostoyevsky? I heard Garnett wasn't very good.
>>8600241
you heard wrong.
Garnett, Avsey, McDuff.
P&V is easily the best.
People are going to reply saying they suck, but don't listen - its a meme.
I'm curious to know who else here is an English teacher? Where do you teach? What grade? What are some of the books/stories you're using this year?
I'll start:
>Philly
>12th grade/11th grade
>Right now I'm teaching Dubliners to my seniors and doing a unit on Faulkners short stories with my juniors. Considering doing Siddhartha later in the year.
>>8600226
>only teaching dead white heterosexual males
Proud of you, man. Keep up the good fight
>>8600230
I'm an English teacher too, in the UK. I think there are too many white males in literature. So I'm only teaching my students women authors and black people.
Right now we're doing Muriel Spark's "The Drivers Seat" next we'll be moving on to Sylvia Plath's "The Bell Jar" and then next year I'll do "To Kill a Mocking Bird"
