Can you people post some great poems about war? I was thinking in poems glorifying war, some great passages of Homer, Shakespeare and the older poets. I was searching especially for Samurai war poems, but found nothing.

To be honest, I do not enjoy the act of war and I feel pity and sadness for those who end up in a situation where they simply need to take up arms. I myself tend to have an opinion similar to the one of Wilfred Owen in his poem “Dulce et decorum Est”, yet now I was wishing to see poems that try to glorify the carcass and monster of battle.

So, can you give me some good passages?

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility: 1095
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect; 1100
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean. 1105
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest English.
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof!
Fathers that, like so many Alexanders, 1110
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their swords for lack of argument:
Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you call'd fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood, 1115
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base, 1120
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

Yeah, Whitman and Melville have some great poems on the American Civil War. Part of Melville's Battle-Pieces:

Texans and Indians trim for a charge:
"Stand ready, men!
Let them come close, right up, and then
After the lead, the iron;
Fire, and charge back!" So strength returned to Lyon.
The Iowa men who held the van,
Half drilled, were new
To battle: "Some one lead us, then we'll do"
Said Corporal Tryon:
"Men! I will lead," and a light glared in Lyon.
On they came: they yelped, and fired;
His spirit sped;
We leveled right in, and the half-breeds fled,
Nor stayed the iron,
Nor captured the crimson corse of Lyon.
This seer foresaw his soldier-doom,
Yet willed the fight.
He never turned; his only flight
Was up to Zion,
Where prophets now and armies greet brave Lyon.

I wouldn't say Swann's Way is as difficult as Ulysses or Gravity's Rainbow. It's not super abstract, just requires a lot of focus because the sentences are very long and winding.

Hey guys, what is the most interesting point in Spanish / south American literature (preferably theatre and poetry) to study. I have to do a comparative dissertation, so ideally will be looking at 3/4 (at least) different artists from the same period. Will be reading the texts in Spanish btw, so translation won't be an issue (as it always is)

have any of you actually read this? Thoughts?

I read it was bad bad but most of the criticisms were that it contained "very misogynistic views of women" and some weird sex scenes.

Why do Lovecraftfags get so defensive when you say his writing sucks and is overly convoluted?

>>
i love lovecraft, but it's a fair criticism to say his writing is overly convoluted.
i mainly get butthurt at people who criticise him for being too racist, or make out like he never describes the cosmic horrors because they're too unimaginable when in fact for the most part he describes them in autistic detail
>>
>>8664512
Because they disagree with you, and when you do something like post "X author sucks" on a chat board, you're either trying to start a debate or you're so amazingly dense you have dreamed up some other justification for bothering to say that.
Besides, you seem deluded enough to feel you've made an argument just by giving one vague insulting opinion ("he sucks") and one subjective preference ("overly convoluted") and that your drivel should be welcomed as some kind of persuasive insight. Actually, you are on precisely the same intellectual and rhetorical level as any tween saying to another "That band on your shirt sucks ass and they can't play for shit!"
(I imagine you're incapable of responding without relying on words like "fag" "triggered" "butthurt" or "troll," but feel free to try, if only to momentarily restore my faith in humanity).

>Don't you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body?
>But the things that come out of a person's mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.
>For out of the heart come evil thoughts--murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.
>These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.

Isn't this really bad advice? Why would Jesus give advice that would lead to centuries of disease transmission from eating with unwashed hands? Was he just trolling?

Unwashed hands is a backhand swipe at Jewish purity laws as defining holyness, not hygiene. Its the basis of Paul's arguments against works as a means to salvation.

Post excerpts that you like

Also, you like it because you are insincere
>>
>>8664029

Are you serious? How is liking shit literature because it's funny insincere? Well I particularly enjoyed that part where Juno tells Jupiter a list of every single mythological and real being she ever fucked (it's everyone).

also, here are some great excerpts of the sophisticated literature of Shawn Wunjo:

>Climbing into the wild blue yonder on a fountain
of piss and shit, the ass-shaped boat took to the sky, and as Lucifer looked down upon the land below like Aeneas surveying the kingdom he had left behind, another floppy cunt-shaped ship landed and shatnered out its load of prolapse-wielding scrotums.The sack of shit panicked, jacked the magic dick off harder, and before the cum-blasters could even throw their fuck grenades at the boat, the two comrades of
the fellowship of the vagina-ass were in the sky,
blasting away at high speed. Lucifer glanced back, grinned again. “Fucking shit niggers!” He said, and the sack of babyshit burbled in agreement, but further up in the sky, like the distance of a giant fucking massive dick
away, some other shit was going down.

and

But none of the gympy retards were eager to die,
so they all ran away like little bitches, clearing a path to the port where the only ship Neptune hadn’t destroyed sat waiting to be commandeered. Like the Ass-Fairy’s boat, this too had a giant magic dick in the bottom of it that had to be stroked to get the thing moving, and as the boat took off into the piss-yellow ocean, it got so hard that it almost popped the burbling sack of babyshit and the razor-bladed dildo had to take over for him. Lucifer grinned, reached into the sack and smeared nacho cheese mixed with
babyshit all over his face. “Holy shit I love life!” He yelled, then turned back. “Oh, andRojir, welcome to the gay fucking fellowship
of the Vagina Ass!”
