Sounds like a fun book, like Pynchon-light. Has anyone read it?
Black authors are certainly on a roll.

When blacks move past the fact that they're black their literature might improve.

I misunderstood your reply. I'm having a hard time putting it into words and I'll definitely misrepresent them but here are some quotes from wikipedia anyway:
>"Jünger rejects the liberal values of liberty, security, ease, and comfort, and seeks instead the measure of man in the capacity to withstand pain and sacrifice."
>"In Storm of Steel, he portrayed war as a mystical experience that revealed the nature of existence."
Even though he has a very positive view on war, he still acknowledges the horrors of it.

Warrior Cats is a pretty grim series. I don't know why they're so against being kittypets. Their existence is just to fight. They raise their kittens to be soldiers, nothing else.

It's high literature, retard. I'm sorry you're too moronic to grasp the deep, intricate metaphors, political, social commentary present within the series' narrative just because they are tribes of cats who "talk" (Communicate naturally like all animals.) Leave this board if you cannot appreciate the beauty of this series of novels which show us the horrors as well as peaks of nationalism, gender roles, and cats with superpowers.

Excerpt from debut novel:

>"He had been dreaming of the cats when the scratching of the dog at his door awoke him. He awoke, by degrees and blearily, to find himself ensconced on his couch, awash with a medley of tins and tang of staling booze, his mobile phone numbly clutched in his porky palm, the metal now wet with the sweat of his clasp, glistening from the slimy balm that fell from every oozing pore all over the skin of his body. For he had fallen asleep in the midst of a message he had been typing, with no small struggle (so fat were his fingers, so tiny the keys), intended for Arsene, which so far read:"

My whole philosophy on life, is that I don't think people should have a problem with people; they should take issue with the way behavior effects the order of the world around them. People aren't like computers, people are delicate and not based on hierarchies of intelligence and information; we're prone to mistakes and totally lack of judgment. A lot of times there's really no clear right or wrong for anything. That's why I find it so difficult to get along in a world where people basically base their judgments off of the primitive parts of their brain, like fear hatred and disgust; those aren't connected to higher thinking parts of the brain, responsible for things like rational thinking. So when I live in a world where people have problems with other people, just instinctively, not as though there's any reason attached to it; not based on any sort of hierarchy, or really any intelligence at all, but instead based on base emotions; I start to feel paranoid that I'm living in an orwellian sort of society. In a way I am.
Because generally accepted points of view in general aren't based off of reason, they're based off of group think. And people hold judgments based on superficial levels, not based off of any sort of complex means of intelligence. It's like, everyone is goldstein, and everyone is big brother, combined.
Because we can't know what other people are thinking, we can never judge people fairly. If everyone knew exactly what someone else was thinking, all the time, no one would ever hate or judge anyone. That's this core problem that I struggle with every single day, and it's like cataclysmic war inside my head every day, trying to deal with all these issues.

This is why I am so excited for artificial intelligence, I crave to live in a world where robot intelligence, based entirely off of rational thinking, finally becomes a part of our civilization. Can you imagine how benevolent such a creature would be? People weren't even capable of imagining the sort of divine fairness that an intelligence based entirely off of rationality would feel, when they invented god.

What makes you think an AI wouldn't result in something like PKDs The Defenders or even worse?

People who dream about the benefit of a more reason than feels based AI society don't seem to understand, that without our empathie which is void of reason results could be worse than the mechanical extermination under Hitler. Even killing someone isn't categorically bad nor is keeping someone alive and "healthy" the best way to exist.

Also you don't seem to think that an AI would be able to evolve systems like empathie on their own with time. In the end we're nothing more than very complex biological machines. What would happen if they would evolve beyond our understanding and decide that simply letting us die out (eg through sterilisation or painless euthanasia) would be the best way to go for us, because we wouldn't need to suffer any more (and make other living reatures suffer).

Your divine fairness would result in "AI works in mysterious ways".

Additionally, such systems exist already eg in the american criminal justice system. And thanks to he fact that humans simply don't like "hatefacts" it's called "racist" because it shows without mercy which groups tend to be more criminal than others and punishes them accorrdingly.

We met while we were on our holiday. We were staying at the same hostel and it was like love at first sight. When I saw him I was just amazed as if I had discovered a new animal species in a wild life forest. To me he looked like a disney prince. Perfect blend of femininity and masculinity. I think he felt the same for me too.

we were both very attracted to each other. He is an observer type. He must have a perfectly planned out scheme to carry out his thoughts. He is thoughtful and introspective.
At the time I was hanging out with a few other guys and didn't mind receiving attention from them.
One day I found out he moved to another town without a word so I was left alone in the hostel. After some time he showed up in a bar on a Friday. We became friends and he invited to his place on occasions. He never talked about his plans or about himself. If I didn't do the talking and questioning he would just sit silent then ask me if it was okay to go back to his room. I heard from his friend that he had been planning to travel somewhere else in a month time. When he was leaving I decided I didn't want to stay in town without him so I went to travel in Asia. We said goodbye but kept contact. I was the one who was sending him messages all the time. He hardly ever spoke to me first. When I returned home I began to wonder if he forgot me and it was all just one of those holiday romance things. I was emotionally unstable, very anxious. Eventually he blocked me on Facebook (yea I know. tragic)
After four months I flew to his home and saw him again. He seemed very excited because it was meant to be a surprise. Then he told me he would take me around the city. He was calm and almost bored. I felt like I was wasting his time. I felt unattractive, sorry and confused. We went out for another day then it was time for me to go back. After then I kept messaging him once in every two weeks. Then he told me why I was talking to him so often. He told me maybe I wasn't trusting him. This was the last thing we ever said. At the time I just needed to talk and share my life with a person I like. I sent him two of my favourite books through his friend. Nothing was said. It was his birthday about two months ago and I didn't say anything. I became very frustrated and deleted my facebook account which was our only mean of communication.
I don't have any questions. I've been feeling sad the whole time and had to write about it anonymously. Thanks for reading my story

What do you guys think it takes to appreciate serious fiction? Is it a more of inborn sensitivity for subtle emotions or a skill you learn with life experiences and getting older or just reading a lot and developing a taste? In the "age/favorite novel" thread there a lot of teenagers some of them as young as sixteen who claim to prefer some serious-ass novels. Are those guys posers or what? Can children really "understand" those novels? We were supposed to read War and Peace for my high school lit class but I think most of us just didn't bother. So how did you guys develop a taste for "patrician" literature?

Time, money, and a distaste for math.
>>
>>8660604

Just because you don't "understand" it doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. Kids may not understand every word, allusion, or deep theme of a poem or story, but they can still be enraptured and compelled by them. I think it's just natural to be entertained by stories, characters, their voices, words and rhythms. This love can grow into something more mature and complex if they're taught and encouraged well.
>>
It may take a genius to write War and Peace, but it takes no special genius to read it. Any patient sixteen year old who wants to understand War and Peace can understand it. It's just a story.

I remember a thread on here a long time ago where somebody posted a picture of Christopher Hitchens in front of a tall stack of books. The OP asked, "How can he read so much and still be a mediocre intellect?" (something like that). The OP was probably knew that he wasn't a genius already but was hoping that reading geniuses would turn him into one. Well, that's not how it works. You can read geniuses all day and still have no brilliant thoughts of your own. A writer can make the subtlest things become clear to you and then, when you close the book, and you're alone with your brain, it's quiet and there's not much happening.
