>ywn live in an optimistic society curious about the world in which we live, eager to discover more

I'd argue that the consequence of our desire to learn in the past has created the postmodern cynicism now. Our deeper understanding of what reality is has detracted from human curiosity and ambition. This could just be "le wrong generation" type thinking but I can't help but feel an emptiness in the world today. There's no desire to do anything for the sake of doing something great. Maybe that was always there and I'm just only alive to see it now.

Good job you edgy shitstains, now what am I supposed to do with my life

The enlightenment was an era of institutionalized arrogance.
So guys in modern greek literature this man is of the most intricate, eloquent and difficult, authors and many consider him the by far best modern greek author.
I wonder if anyone outside Greece has heard of Αλεξανδρος Παπαδιαμαντης(Alexandros Papadiamntis)
One of his books was published by NYRB Classics, but it's only 144 pages. Feeble. What's his big masterpiece?
>>8660539
His greatest work is considered Fonissa(Φονισσα) which is the female form of murderer. But his works were mainly short stories and a few novels.
144 pages could contain a lot of his greater works.
>>8660550
That's a shame, I find myself unable to read authors who write feeble little novellas. Seems womanly. I actually can't read Kafka because he never wrote a huge book. Philip Roth and Cormac McCarthy I don't read either. What is the purpose of all these 300-pagers? You can have a couple of those, fine, but if by the end of a novelist's life he hasn't written anything longer than 600 pages that summarizes everything he thought about life... then was he really a novelist? I can't respect a writer like that.
Can anyone recommend a quality book covering the history of the african continent? maybe not even quality but a good read at least

Africa, Biography of a Continent by John Reader is informative and readable.
Apparently Basil Davidson's histories are pretty good but maybe a bit dated, I've only read Black Man's Burden which is a bit more specific.

How do you balance reading fiction and nonfiction, writing, working hard in order to get rich, your scientific / technical self education, exercising, social life, outdoor experiences, and internet browsing / current events reading?
I feel guilty for doing literally anything because I'm not doing other shit.
I haven't even decided yet whether hard work is self cucking (on the existential level) or not.
>>8660425
Well, it might help if you combine a few of those.
Exercising can also be outdoor experience, which can also contribute to your social life (hiking, going on long walks with friends, things like rock climbing, swimming, going fishing, etc.).
It's best if you can find a job that has some downtime to do your internet browsing/current events reading too, ideally one that even funds training for you.
At that point all you have to worry about once you get home is going out for a hike with your friends, writing a bit, then reading before you go to bed.

What does /lit/ think of the 4chan-themed poetry of Rachael Allen?
>"A series named after the boards on the website, Rachael Allen’s 4chan Poems revisit the tradition of confessional poetry via the model of the internet’s anonymous confessions, its games with subjectivity, power, and truth."
>"As a fearless representative of the site, Rachael accurately depicts life as a young person in the twenty-first century, seeking solace in anonymous internet culture. As a woman, her own struggles of expression in the face of the misogynistic tyranny which also exists on the site make her poems both ruthless confessions and inspiring manifestos of female empowerment."

I dont care
I don't really understand what about them beyond their titles being board names is actually to do with 4chan. I think it's mainly a gimmick.
I hate any face put to this website. I hate every mouth breather that tries to talk about memes and reaction images in real life. These boards and their micro communities are only ever funny or interesting when they stay faceless, nameless, anonymous posts on a light violet or green page (custom UI/skinfags pls kys).
Take your little writing project and your musings on being le womyn on 4chan and fuck the fuck off.
When you buy a copy of Patrick Sheane Duncan's new book you get a free signed picture of Felicia Day.
No I'm not joking.
I'd buy it if it came with her smelly panties instead.

I don't have any /lit/ mentors but holy shit having mentors is great. It's really nice to have people who are much more experienced than you give you advice on what career moves to make.

For those of you out there who liked this book: why?
I have never been more irritated by a novel in my life, it just completely rubbed me the wrong way with the writing style and it's edginess.
>>8660306
It's pathetic, reddit-tier nonsense, on par with Ready Player One.
>>8660306
Yes, both Snow Crash and Neuromancer are trash tier novels.
>>8660306
I agree fucking terrible, and In hindsight I should have figured that out from the blurb mentioning a Japanese hacker who runs around with a katana. Though the worse parts didn't even involve him, it was the edgy 15 year old who kept a spike in her vagina in case she got raped what? Also hard to keep track of what was happening in the Meta and what was happening in the real, really convoluted ending I thought.
The only bits I even slightly enjoyed were the references to ancient Mesopotamian cultures and trying to tie that in, but when in conjunction to modern religion 'All religion is a lie' talk it just felt edgy.
hey /lit/, can I get some recomendations about two subjects?
1) Fiction in which snails are god, or slug-like creatures are aliens/god-like entities
I know about Lovecraft, but which stories specifically are about this. Also, of course, anything else.
2) Older Women, Younger Men
age gap, size difference, etc etc
>>8660234
1) I think you're exclusively pointing to animorphs here.
2) I think you're hinting at Lolita here.
Was this fun for you?
>slug-like creatures are aliens/god-like entities
Anyone remember that short story about a starfish that goes on a long journey across roads and pavements but it's some sort of divine starfish with supernatural abilities that uses black holes? I think it was written by someone on /lit/ and there was a pdf

What's your favorite EBook reader app or program /lit/?
I don't know if this belongs on here or /g/ so I'm asking on both boards.
On Android? Moonreader
firefox plugin for laptop.
Kindle for when I'm in the taxi, asking the driver to take me to the library, and step on it.
Is there a good app on windows 10 or windows 10 store for reading and syncing across to android?
Have you read the first Millenial novel yet /lit/?
Pic related is the author, who is obviously down with the kids
Go to bed, Tao.
>>8660101
Is the new Tao Lin novel?
>>8660101
I'm sure Tao Lin has already been called a millenial novelist by NYMag, so cheeky that they'd call his clone the first GREAT one.
"The laborers have the most enormous power in their hands, and, if they once became thoroughly conscious of it and used it, nothing would withstand them; they would only have to stop labor, regard the product of labor as theirs, and enjoy it. This is the sense of the labor disturbances which show themselves here and there."

Does obscurantism show true mastery of a language or a cowardice towards language's actual purpose (the communication of ideas)?
Within philosophy, I'd guess that unnecessarily clouding information is antithetical to the goal of education and spreading new ways of understanding. But I'm not sure about literature, which has a style-driven purpose that I don't find as integral in philosophy. Do you think this would apply to literature as well?
not necessarily. Literature can be art, and as such conveying it's underlying purpose can be secondary to that.

Any examples of something particularly obscure about hegels writing? any common famous ones, or people just say most of his writing is? I mean there are some redeeming things he wrote right?
The entire point of philosophy is to elucidate obscurity, it just so happens, it seems, the reason some philosophical works are complex, is because apparently, the totality of reality is potentially complex, potentially obscure, potentially difficult to embark on the task of approaching some semi full elucidation
