You are tasked with giving a man who has no recollection of his past, 3 pieces of literature to read, in an effort to further his thinking and expose him to philosophical ideas and experiences others have lived through (fiction is alright as well). Don't worry about the language it is written in.

Choose your 3 books in the following format:
>book 1
>book 2
>book 3

Support your book choices with any line of reasoning you wish to pursue, written below the choices. Giving him the equivalent of dog shit for the sake of laughs means you will not be taken seriously, and seen instead as an /a/ tier shit poster.

Honestly, if the person has no memories at all, there's no point. He has to live first.
There's definitely no point in starting with the Greeks, especially philosophical works.
If I still had to make a recommendation, I'd probably go for some Shakespeare.

What does /lit/ think of the First English Novel™ ?

It was a favorite as a child, but when I reread it a few years ago I thought it didn't hold up as literature

Really? Which ones. I've experienced little homophobia in classic works and the veiled allusions are usually ambiguous
>>
>>8740803
Not that old, I guess there was a pretty small window where a writer might talk openly and negatively about homos.

I'm reading The Big Sleep currently.

How good is the Welcome to the NHK Novel? I liked the anime and find reading manga kind of stupid.

you are a fag. just keep living until nature runs its due course. try not to verbalize too much, just enjoy your body and shut up.
>>
>>8740291
Its not great. The fun relationship dynamics of the anime are lost in navel gazing monologues and rambling conspiracy theories.
>>
>>8740291
Someone I knew characterized it as darker and far superior, since it doesn't get into humor or a conventional plot.
I rred it (I didn't watch more than an episode of the anime). It was interesting but not exceptionally remarkable, and my taste isn't that refined, so /lit/ might find the brief autobiographical novel less than stellar.

What's /lit/s opinion on ereaders?I'm thinking about getting one but im not sure I want to give up the "feel" of books

Either read on your phone or read real books, ereaders are waste of money.
>>
>>8740268
I should add this is only my opinion, if you think you will read more by buying ereader then go for it mate. It's personal. Added bonus is probably that you can download ebooks for free on bookzz.org

Recommend me must-read courtesy books.
I have developed a huge interest in proper behaviour, etiquette, way of speaking, way of carrying yourself.

I tried reading Emma but that was way too much. It was the most condescending tea party I could ever imagine.

If you're trying to be more social and make friends, this isn't going to work. Acting "high class" is just gonna make you look like an asshole.

How do I find books I like if I haven't read much yet but want to?
I know the genres i like but I have no idea about anything else.

I came from watching anime to manga to visual novels and now I want to go book.

i know nothing about literature. im not even a psued cause i cant fake it. that being said, Tokyo Ghoul in its entirety is based off Kafka's work, with a lot of emphasis on metamorphosis. Id give that a wack first.

1. Google "best sf/mystery books" or something and see what's popular and acclaimed
2. Read something that looks interesting and read the amazon preview to see if you can get into it
3. use Goodreads to find similar books

very plebby way i know but desu don't know better for you

Okay, I just read this, and I got fucking meme'd as hell, didn't I?

1000-pages worth of dogshit. Too many acronyms, too much techspeak, the prose reads like it's the ramblings of some insane person stuck in a mental asylum. It tries to fool you into thinking it has a plot, but it never actually goes anywhere. Who cares if the last 300 pages are mildly interesting when the previous 700 have already bored the reader to death and made it so that he's not invested in your story or characters at all anymore?

This is proof of how long novels, in general, fail.

I don't think it has much to do with how /lit/ you are at all. /lit/ has boners for canon authors and postmodernists. This list is mostly mainstream contemporary fiction.

Writing dialect is a skill and a balancing act that can easily be overdone and become a distraction to the reader. Dickens was very good at it, and Twain was good too. It's best though to avoid it, beyond maybe giving a description or one or two examples to give the reader a taste
>>
>>8740132
twain was the best. flannery O'Connor is another that did it well.

I enjoy the preservation of the accurate portrayal of an area's vernacular. I will say it's probably best to keep it in quotes and to provide a reliable narrator unless you're going for the huck finn thing which can be great too.

but as anon said it's so easily overdone it can be annoying, pretentious etc etc

Does politics have any place in the arts? Of course this is a literature board, but I think that literature is to be included in this question as well
To me it seems like the two are oil and water
Are there even any great works of literature that aren't riddled with politics?
Might be that dadaism is the only one to be free
16 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
No, except for some political programs supporting the arts, and the arts entertaining politicians—theoretically there is no overlap.

Furthermore, politics is at its best cold, hard logic (also at its worst but decisions are judged by reasonable policy).

And art is free form. It can be shit, it can be great, it can be ironically political in format/presentation, but the bottom line is that the field of art cannot replace politics. I guess you weren't asking for that, but whatever.
>>
>>8740063
Sorry of
I meant more along the line of inclusion of political conviction or ideology if you prefer, in a given work of art
>>
>>8740017
M8 Dadaism is expressly political. People are inherently political as politics is nothing more that believing a certain way of life is preferable to another, which is influenced by how you interpret the world. So even if you were to read a novel without a pronounced political ideology the interactions of the characters would still betray (or create the impression in the reader of; see the anti-socialist interpretations of animal farm that the stunted come up with) some political belief.
You could try reading some theory on this, maybe then you'll be more at ease.
