Does politics have any place in the arts? Of course this is a literature board, but I think that literature is to be included in this question as well
To me it seems like the two are oil and water
Are there even any great works of literature that aren't riddled with politics?
Might be that dadaism is the only one to be free
>>
No, except for some political programs supporting the arts, and the arts entertaining politicians—theoretically there is no overlap.

Furthermore, politics is at its best cold, hard logic (also at its worst but decisions are judged by reasonable policy).

And art is free form. It can be shit, it can be great, it can be ironically political in format/presentation, but the bottom line is that the field of art cannot replace politics. I guess you weren't asking for that, but whatever.

Sorry of
I meant more along the line of inclusion of political conviction or ideology if you prefer, in a given work of art

M8 Dadaism is expressly political. People are inherently political as politics is nothing more that believing a certain way of life is preferable to another, which is influenced by how you interpret the world. So even if you were to read a novel without a pronounced political ideology the interactions of the characters would still betray (or create the impression in the reader of; see the anti-socialist interpretations of animal farm that the stunted come up with) some political belief.
You could try reading some theory on this, maybe then you'll be more at ease.

Well, Ayn Rand is a horrible example but another horrible example is extreme propaganda—that uses art to direct behavior, just like commercial advertising does but more extremely.

Also, the European filmmakers during Hitler's rise—there are a lot of interesting stories there. Like how Fritz Lang was summonsed by Hitler, and Fritz went not knowing the full deal but almost shit his pants and got out of there. Meaning, it seems a soulful crime by an artist to use their skill for such a purpose. Commercial artists may be considered lamer than more respected artists.

I hope this wasn't totally worthless, too. haha. I'm horrible artist and politician, yet, it somehow works comedically. Luckily, some people like to laugh and I've learned to appreciate being a cause of their laughter and not offended at not being taken seriously.

can there be nothing without politics
>>8740096
but many artists quite purposefully do so

>>8740086
Dadaism is a horrible example of political art though, it completely failed and became a parody of itself.
>>

Isn't dadaism supposed to be without meaning and thereby apolitical?

The Peggy Brand article (the first one in this PDF) is useful for understanding both the value of politicized art and how to evaluate it
>http://www.ktpress.co.uk/pdf/nparadoxaissue8and9_Peggy-Zeglin-Brand_4-18.pdf

This blog post is helpful in understanding some of the more confusing (potentially conflicting) aspects of Brand's argument

Spoilered pic is Orlan's "Seventh Plastic Surgical Operation" which is referenced in the Brand article

>inb4 women can't be philosophers
>inb4 uncritical anti-feminism
How can you talk politics without wanting to talk about women? Read the article, it actually (no, really!) covers elucidates OPs questions

The nonsense of dada was a reaction to the supposed rationality that resulted in WW1. It was always an explicitly political movement.

Apparently Duchamp was a big fan of Stirner

>Does politics have any place in the arts?

ridiculous question. all forms of art have been intertwined with politics forever. gulliver's travels, published 1735, was a political satire. the bible has a heavy political spin in its message, particularly about king david.

What about a room like Meurtriere or Ten Skies

There's a bunch, esp situationists. In a sense, Warhol was making a bunch of political statements tho they may have seemed (or been) more like economic statements on the face of them.

If you mean what is the arts version to political science, it's political philosophy. It's one of the key divides between the UK and the US, I know Germany has an even more sciencey academic politics than the US, and I think France is also Philosophy like the UK. That is not to say that there isn't both everywhere, but that's just how it tends in each country.
