Identify as another race or gender and start writing crappy YA novels.
>>
>>8871019
They don't HAVE to be crappy. I'm becoming v. interested in subverting and deconstructing the form of YA, much like Joyce did with the traditional novel or Moore with the graphic form.

My sis wants to draw IJ characters but hasn't read the book yet.

Posting descriptions of characters in your own words, central or ancillary, would be much appreciated as she could work off of them as she draws.

Physical characteristics are good, but see if you can sprinkle in a few pithy bits of personal character (not spoiling the book as she's going to read it soon)

I'll start

Don Gately: He's a big guy, almost like the blonde haired russian with the red-white striped shirt from the 2004 punisher movie, but he's got a good heart in addition to being a strongman, and that's what makes him a big guy.His resting face expression looks like a thrift store sofa after all the drugs he's pumped into himself and all the things he's seen. He's either looking perplexed, as he's not very bright, or acquiescing to something he's not too keen on. He dresses utilitarian, not because he doesn't have a personality, but because he's had too much of a personality in the past, and it was this close to ruining his life His head's humongous and indestructible.

The actual fuck. Why does she want to draw characters from a book she hasn't even read.

I am slowly coming to terms with how full of shit everything and everyone is.

You can't even read a book and, after being bored to death by page 200, call it boring and go do something else. There are 9001 academics and journalists and other pseudointellectuals ready to call you a pleb.

I've read wealth of nations to page 200 and it's literally nothing but painstakingly slow anecdotes about increased supply lowering prices and decreased supply raising prices. It's boring as shit trivial anecdotes yet I will be called a pleb for saying that.

I am at about page 350 of a Dickens book and even though its paid by the word turgid aimless nonsense I will be called a pleb for saying that. Even though Dickens wrote for people with less formal education than 10 year olds today, pseudointellectuals pretend that reading him is a sign of intelligence and that you need ten PhDs to understand him. THAT is how high pseudointellectualism has progressed.

I read Plato and he spent 80 pages wondering whether names are just labels or whether they properly describe (or match) the nature of what they name... I'm not even fucking joking. Yet people will defend this.

I don't want to dwell on books but shit permeates everywhere.

My engineering degree was just introductory maths and physics and chemistry class plus a load of stamp collecting brain-dead corporate wagecuck training courses.

You're told that work is noble... yet people look down on me and laugh at me for working in a retailcuck job.

You are 90 % judged on what university you went to. My one was ranked in the world's top 150 (I only chose it because it was nearest to me) and I still feel like a prole who has been branded as an idiot.

My idea of the ending is that Bateman understands that he has reached the limit of materialistic and moral excess and that there is no way for him to access a higher plane or become more than a slave to the consumerism that engulfs him. But like I said that's just my personal view.

Explain. AP is better than books like Americanah, White Teeth, Beloved, Oscar Wao, etc. All of which are obsessed with identity and filled with genteel sermons about the evils of prejudice (literally, in the case of Beloved).

Okay, I've been hearing a lot of different perspectives about this book, but I'm still confused

What's the definitive answer, is this book good or bad?

I shouldn't be posting this but I'm going to, it's Christmas. I know this guy at Penguin. He lives in my building and invites me out for drinks every now and then. One night i got around to asking him if he knew any interesting rumors going around about authors. And he told me his boss, an agent who deals with Pynchon's books, getting then edited, published, any press and stuff like that, recently told him a secret about Pynchon.

You know how there was that 11 year gap between GR and Vineland? And after 11 years, all Pynchon punched out was a (relatively) small book that didn't even begin to live up to what he accomplished in GR? Well apparently Pynchon's been working on a book since the early 60s, he was going to publish it in 1980, but he pulled out at the last minute and promised a different book in four years. Then he was going to publish it in 1994, he said it was finally ready, but backed out again at the last minute. After Mason & Dixon came out he made an arrangement with his publisher: he's going to continue working on it until he dies, and he will leave the rights for publishing in his will.
So basically, everything he's every published (GR, Against the Day, M&D) have all been nothing but a side project for this one In Search of Lost Time tier work he's been writing, editing, and rewrtiting for the last fifty or so years.

What was your Christmas read, /lit/?

Just finished pic related. For the forced humour and simplistic prose, it actually rather comfy.

Preceding this was a reread of Catcher in the Rye and will be succeeded by Thomas' A Child's Christmas in Wales.

If I were a girl I'd be annoyed that I can't take goofy pictures without 74% of the picture's appeal being first and foremost that I'm a girl.

If I go take a bunch of goofy anime dressup pictures with a hamster right now, no one will give a fuck, UNLESS one of the pictures is really cool or funny. If I were a girl, I could take even relatively shitty pictures and they'd have a decently high potential to catch people's attention, get saved, and ultimately get spread around.

That's all well and good, at first blush. But suppose you get tired of the free and easy attention. Suppose you want to really test your mettle and see whether your cosplay lol hamster haha pictures are funny in and of themselves, whether they truly contribute to the world and change people's lives for the better. You can't. You can never know. There's no way to correct for the vaginal boost, to single out that variable and eliminate it to see what rating you really got.

I'm glad I'm a man. Everything I do will be rated harshly but fairly. No one will tweet or upvote my creations unless they beat out the rest. If I had a cunt, I'd be trapped forever in a world of meaningless validation.

What are some works I can read that can rationalize/justify sexual attraction? I've reached the point that I think attraction to someone really amounts to nothing. I find it hard to understand how so many poets wrote about beauty and such when its really such a base thing. Think about it this way: when you are attracted to a qt and want to go and talk to her what more are you doing than being strung by urges way beyond your control. Someone could argue that these urges are good since they bring us closer together but I would counter by saying that they also do a lot of harm to those who weren't fortunate in the gene-pool lottery. Before someone brings it up I don't consider myself a bad looking guy and have had several girlfriends. I just don't know what to do about the fact that every time a girl falls for me if I'm not attracted to her I hurt her. Do you guys ever feel the same? Any philosophers/books that can help me see the possible good in attraction?

What do you think of 'The Rider and The Elephant' metaphor?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Happiness_Hypothesis
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8870070
Here's an explanation of this metaphor I blatantly stole.

The Rider is the conscious side of our brains that we control, the elephant is the bulky unconscious side that moves us.

The Rider can not control the elephant he can only train it.

The Primal Instincts of the Elephant are Food, Water, Sex. Since the first two are easily attained in developed countries. That Leaves the Elephant with plenty of extra time that it must fill. This is accomplished via television, video games, sweet processed foods, materialistic, consumerism, chasing the opposite sex. "Money,Sex, and Power" Is what the Elephant wants since food and water are taken care of.

However these things do NOT bring happiness.

1)Examples of the Elephant in Control: Average College student

Being a College student in a Fraternity, it is very apparent that the college is when Everyone's Elephants Control the rider to a large degree. College is essentially the peak of Elephants season. This is due to Movies(Animal house/American Pie) and society's saying "Its the best years of your life",TFM, and being away from your parents.

Kid's are consistently involved in Drinking, smoking pot, Socializing, sex, eating bad food, TV, Video games. "Living in the moment" They like to say or new age "You only live once bullshit. College can quickly turn into 4-6 years of self-indulgent, self-destructive behavior of letting your elephant run your life. You are consistently looking for the next fix, this is how freshman-15lb becomes so true.

Master Rider's: Jesus, Budda, Ghandi: These People are seen as Godly in a sense since they master the Elephant and took total Control of the Elephant. No Easy task.

First is Elephant control Vs Second is Rider Control:

Tv vs Reading
Fast food vs Home cooked
Not working out vs Working out
Making below a 2.5 GPA vs Making above
Excessive Drinking vs Casual Drinking
Majoring in something easy Vs Majoring in something difficult
No Intership vs Internship
No saved or invested money vs Invested and saved money
Pop-Tarts for breakfast vs fruit and veggie smoothie
Nothing vs Meditiation
Not going to Church vs making the effort to go occasionally.

One is instant unsatisfying dopamine fixs, the other long term, self-Improment and respect for the body.

Kid's in Ivy Leagues and/or Top state Universitys have strong emotional intelligence who can control the Elephants desires and generally are better off in life.

P.S. Warning however the Rider can always be overthrown.

Take Fortune 500 CEO scandalize, Bill Clinton, & Tiger woods. Men whos rider's were so productive and in control it rose them to the highest status in their fields. Only to Reach the top and have the Elphant crash it down.

How to Train?

Stop eating bad food
Read instead of watch TV
Meditate
Wake up early
Only go out to party once a week/ couples times a month
Join clubs
Make above a 3.0
Be friends with similar minded people, not self-destructive monkey's.
Workout

>The Rider can not control the elephant he can only train it.

Training is a form of control.

>Majoring in something easy Vs Majoring in something difficult

Hey /lit/izens

what do women read? I want to give my sister a book for Christmas but I have no idea what I want to give her, mind you she finds Ishmael difficult to grasp and understand but she is the greatest and sweetest person you'll ever find and I want to give her the joy of reading. My sister also just got out of a long term relationship so any book that can deal with that would be great.

Invent a world where the central conflict isn't about a teenager fighting a simplified, obvious force of evil while learning things about what it means to be a mature adult. If you insert a love interest, have it be accessory to the plot and not central, and describe romantic feeling in a sophisticated way. Then it will not be YA
