There's so much negative stuff going on, and people as whole (especially here) often seem very angry and cynical. To counter all this, what books would you recommend?
Also I was just thinking that I've been on 4chan daily for at least 10 years and it has probably affected my growth as a person to some degree. I mean 4chan isn't a place you'd recommend to a new acquitance would you? Perhaps it's time to stop?
>>8866336
Read the Greeks (I'm not joking)
No I would not recommend this place to anyone. It was time for me to stop in 2013.
You don't need to counter the negativity. You need to get so high on negativity it does nothing.

Oh I've done that already but after realizing what a miserabe life I'm living I decided it would be better to change.

Pretty accurate boss.
Is this grammatically correct?
The next time I think of how free will is ultimately illusory; I'll be sure to include a little Doo with that Woo!
>>8866308
Nope.
>>8866308
No. Why would you use a semi-colon? You aren't separating two independent clauses.
HOW THE FUCK DO PEOPLE STILL NOT KNOW WHAT SEMICOLONS DO
I learned that shit in fifth grade and I was a snot-nosed brat
Why did he write novels instead of plays? Most of his books are basically just a philosophical comedy of humors.
Maybe he tought plays are for europussies
i can't think of anything funny to say
He was a novelist
Garnett, revised Garnett, McDuff, Avsey, Magarshack.
>>8866237
>translation
>>8866248
To expand,
>revised Garnett
the Norton Edition revised by McReynolds and Oddo. Comprehensive annotations.
>Magarshack
archaic like Garnett, but Magarshack didn't work under the time constraints or editorial pressures of Garnett, making for a more accurate and comprehensive translation.
>Avsey
The most contemporary English-speaking context, focused on Dosto's message over his literal words. Notably British.
>McDuff
I don't know but I've only heard good things

Hey /lit/
What are some of the best non-fiction books on the history and culture of the Wild West? I'm looking more for survey-level works than any specific place or event. Alternatively, what are some of the best fiction books that you feel come closest to accurately capturing it?
I know it was a lot different (not necessarily more boring) than most of its portrayals in pop culture. I suppose I could ask this in /his/ but I figured I'd get a quicker response here.
blood meridian
There is no singular vision of the Wild West, but for what I imagine the canonized vision to be, fiction would be Larry McMurtry, non-fiction would be Dee Brown
Who wants to discuss the book that ended Philosophy?
Haven't read it but I hate philosophy and thinking about thinking. Will I like this?
>>8866235
Depends, if you know the history of Philosophy and its bias towards abstractions and misunderstandings of language then this book may end for you centuries of nonsense.
If on the other hand you don't know much philosophy, then this book may seem obvious or rather, it may even seem childish/unintelligible.
As a prelude, you should first read Descarte's 'Meditations on First Philosophy' then read G.E. Moore's 'A Proof of the External World' and then read this book.
but theres nothing to discuss...

I heard that Cortazar was just describing his own dreams
>he doesn't know Greek, Latin, French, Spanish, Italian, German, and Russian

Seriously, fucking end this meme. You might as well just watch the movie version and save yourself the trouble of reading some dipshit's "interpretation" of a classic because you're too dumb to learn a language.
This is true.
>Look mom, I posted it again!
I speak three languages. Spanish, Portagues, and Brasilian.
Thinking about maybe taking a crack at Italian, but I'm pretty much a language genius [as demonstrated by my trilingualism] and I really don't see the point of piling another one on. Hell, I could probably do something super human like tackling Italian AND French and I'd probably get it done no prob.
So in a sudden rush of melancholie, cropped up frustrations i decided to start writing my first story. It took me 10 minutes to write the first two sentences, and now after revising them im down to 0 sentences. Is writing something this fucking hard for all you guys? Or am i just being a larger pussy then usually (presumably so). Also post some comfy pics please.
>>8866066
melancholia* sorry about that, also nice dubs almost quints
>>8866066
Beginnings are hard, OP. The hard part only posts until you finally realise you'll never amount to anything. Then you give up and it's all smooth from there.
Pic related: it's a depiction of my life

The funny thing is, that was EXACTLY what i was trying to write about.
I'm learning to read French. What is the final boss of French literature? Is it pic related? Some say you can't understand Les mis unless you understand french like a native speaker.

What's the French Finnegans Wake? The longest and most convoluted sentences I've read translated from French were by Maurice Blanchot and Julien Gracq. For all I know, those might have not been the smoothest translations or there might be far more advanced (if I may call them that) works in French.

How is it even possible for The Metamorphosis to be so good but for The Trial to be so bad?
>dude it like, makes no sense, lmao
Obviously, that much was apparent by page one. If Kafka's goal was to waste a load of time on a story that goes nowhere to make the reader feel what K. was feeling then well done, I'm truly very frustrated with that.
Idk man I kind of felt the same about metamorphosis. It was just kind of like "yep, that's probably what would happen if a dude turned into a cockroach."
Metamorphosis is just short, so hipsters flock to it and praise it without reading anything else
Sounds like a particular board I know ...
>>8866045
Yeah but him being a roach is very symbolic.
I can see no symbolism in the bureaucratic mess that's surrounding K. It's very literal (though as some would rightly point out relevant to western life).
