So it's been like 5 years since last architecture from AMD and over 6 years since last good cpu. What the fuck these guys are doing? Had to change picture related to Intel because these fuckers doesn't have anything to compete, what went wrong?

>What the fuck these guys are doing?
Public toilets.
I'm still running Phenom II unlocked to 4. It can run just about anything modern but it's nearing 100% utilization so its time to replace it. I'm waiting to see if zen can deliver otherwise I'll get some overpriced intel cpu.
>>55719348
I gave up with my x6 1055t last year and replaced it with i5 6600k.

Ok, /g/, so if CS isn't about computers, and it isn't about science, what is it about?
Could it be examined as a subset of engineering? Certainly most CS-related jobs ( web development not included ) involve solving problems in a resource-efficient and practical manner. At least if you're good at it they do. Code monkeys notwithstanding.

Yes. Only makes sense now for a few places though.
5.0GHZ out of the box clock speeds. Why aren't you using the fastest CPU around? It literally destroys anything that Intel has put out.

Does anyone know the color scheme (or something similar) in the pic?
It's the Bisqwit color scheme
eye cancer dark

Probably invented by Bisqwit since he is the one who made that tool. I think its also the one he uses in his text editor, Joe. Ask him on twitter, he is really nice
I've got a DELL U2715H monitor right now
Is there any point upgrading this, without wasting money on insignificant improvements, if I don't want 4k/widescreen/bigger screen and my only concern is image quality?
If yes, which monitor would be an upgrade to it?
Personally would be an upgrade for me. I have the 24" 1080p version and it is really nice. Might do a dual screen and make the 1080p panel sideways.
>>55718827
funny thing I had the 24" 1080p version before, not the U though, but the P series
the warranty was almost off (2.5 years old), when I noticed a few dead pixels in the middle of my screen
told them about it, and they sent me a replacement monitor the following day
it was this
they literally gave me a brand new monitor, that's worth twice as much as my original 2.5 years old one, without even asking or checking the dead pixels (all they wanted was a photo)
I fucking love DELL for this
>>55718785
I just bought the U2515H and this is the best monitor I have ever owned. Colors are nice and the PPI is just right for the size.

>France orders Microsoft to stop tracking Windows 10 users
>France's data protection commission has ordered Microsoft to "stop collecting excessive user data" and to stop tracking the web browsing of Windows 10 users without their consent. In a notice published on Wednesday, the CNIL said that Microsoft must also take steps to guarantee "the security and confidentiality" of its users' personal information, after determining that the company was still transferring data to the US under the "Safe Harbor" agreement that an EU court invalidated in October. Microsoft has three months to comply with the orders, the CNIL said.
>The CNIL says it decided to issue the notice due to the "seriousness of the breaches and the number of individuals concerned," saying there are more than 10 million Windows users in France. The CNIL found that Microsoft is collecting "excessive" data on Windows 10 users, including the specific apps they download and how much time they spend on each one. The organization added that the company uses cookies to serve personalized ads without properly informing users or allowing them to opt out, and that the four-character PIN system used to access Microsoft services is insecure, because there is no limit on the number of attempts a user can make.
>If Microsoft does not comply within the three-month window, the CNIL says it may appoint an investigator who could recommend sanctions against the company. "The purpose of the notice is not to prohibit any advertising on the company’s services but, rather, to enable users to make their choice freely, having been properly informed of their rights," the CNIL said in a statement.
>tl;dr France's CNIL ordered MIcrosoft to stop tracking it's users and Microsoft must comply within 3 months

Best place to get a future proof laptop? For at least 5 years lets say.
Is newegg still king or ibuypower?
>>55718720
a laptop is never future proof as you can't easily upgraded
>>55719561
This, get a T420 and you can put up to 16GB of ram in it
>future proof
Look at the past 5 years. Besides SSD's, there hasn't been any significant improvement on performance. Just get something that's easy to replace the battery in a few years
So why haven't you gotten a Pentium 4 Extreme yet? It performs amazingly in today's work environment and can game quite well. There's no need to buy overpriced CPUs
>>55718684
goodluck playing 1080p mkv with it, especially those encoded by HEVC
>>55718775
>mkv
Only autists use mkv
>>55718684
Pentium 4 Extreme is still overpriced on used market. In fact it's getting pricier everyday because new cpus come out that get better and better and it's used price goes up because it gets older and rarer and performs shittier the older it gets.

Before I being, I know the attitudes towards doing your own research around here--I've done the research I can. I am asking the questions because the answers I'm looking for requires years of experience in these markets that I just don't have.
My system seemingly survived a catastrophic PSU failure about 3 years ago, but it's finally dying. Motherboard is shot (1 PCI-e slot is dead, the other two are having serious performance issues, back I/O only partially functioning), and my old 7950 died (pretty sure the faulty PCI-e slot killed it).
I have plenty of stuff I can salvage (CPU cooler, PSU, storage, case if I want to) but I need a new mobo and GPU, which puts me in a predicament--I don't want to spend the money to get yesterday's hardware, but given the highly fluctuating state of newly released hardware I know I'm going to get the shit-end of the stick on stuff, especially GPU's, price-wise.
So, my question is this: should I go ahead and get z170/skylake/ddr4 and a 1070, or should I wait for prices to come down on the 1080/see how the 480/1060 matures? It is not a buyer's market right now, and I'm not exactly made of money. Should I just wait and see what AMD releases later this year and how NVIDIA answers?
For reference, I don't really care about 4k gaming, but I'd like a card that good enough to let me subsample 1440p/handle 1440 when I eventually get a new monitor.
Skylake-X
