So back in December, we had a power surge. A few weeks later, my laptop (Asus G55VW-DS71, pic related) wouldn't turn on. The power button light turns on, the disk drive spins, the fans run, nothing happens. The display doesn't light up, external display doesn't work. However, sometimes after attempting to power it on a lot, it turns on. It then works fine until it turns off again, and then it's dead. Any tips?

Asus lol

christmas gift, had no control over it, sorry
I have the same computer
Fell for the gaymen laptop meme and didn't regret it until I found myself working on the go more often. I have a 2014 HP Omen, and I can't figure out how to get the bootloader for most Linux distros to not simply boot to a GRUB console. The only ones that boot up OK are Ubuntu variants, and the battery life on Windows 10 is abysmal. Having to find an outlet halfway through the day is shit. Can somebody either recommend a good power pack(non-removable battery), or help me get Puppy booting? Running live from USB, I can get a good 6-8 hours on Puppy as opposed to only 4-5 on Lubuntu.
>>56332052
disable the discrete graphics (you could do this via bios perhaps?) or kernel arguments or dsdt
just run with the integrated gpu
>>56332052
>hp omen
I legit thought you meant omen as in a piece of shit, good god hp fucking sucks at naming shit.
>Since my Omen had only 256GB SSD I decided this partitions were taking too much space, and decided to delete them! However, there is one important fact: HP does not give you serial key for Windows, instead you have to restore them from recovery partition when you want to reinstall them. In order to be able to reinstall Windows in future, you either have to keep the recovery partition on disk, or you can save it to external media, like USB, using HP Recovery Manager, which is already installed on Windows. I used it to save recovery partition to USB (it took 13GB of space), and then I deleted all partitions except for Windows and UEFI.
Also I guess I'm confused by grub console because that's normal for linux, much like if you had a dual boot system where windows prompts for selection.
Do you mean it straight up boots to a cli? Then just startx and it should boot normally after that.

Also I should ask why not try fedora 24? I always got better life out of my x220 compared to it running windows 10 now on it.
This is a thread for those who enjoy using BlackBerry smartphones [and other devices] which run the wonderful, QNX-based, BlackBerry 10 OS (like the Passport, Classic, Q10, Q5, Z30 and so on). Let's share the advantages of using a BB10 device, discuss tips, recommend apps, and have a good ol' fashioned circle-jerk. I'll start.
Reasons to use a BlackBerry 10 device:
- Secure, stable, fast, responsive, based on the glorious Unix-like QNX operating system.
- Robust. Comes OOTB with a bevy of features / capabilities that on the other mobile OSes you'd only get via a custom ROM or multiple third-party apps. It can do way more than a fresh install of iOS or stock Android can. Also, the BlackBerry Assistant is objectively more functional than Apple's Siri.
- No feature creep. Because BB10 has become a bit of a niche platform, it is maintained rather than "enhanced" with new features every update. Updates mainly focus on improving upon existing features, increasing performance, security patches and so on. This means you can use it to help you get shit done, rather than worrying about changing your workflow. This is the same reason many of us stick with LTS releases of LiGNUx distros. When you actually have to get work done in the real world, it's far better to know your device well, and be able to rely on its stability. I'm a grad student and freelance worker myself. I don't have much time to waste on superfluous bullshit.
- Compatible with Android apps (ships with Amazon AppStore, but you can add F-Droid, APKPure, and others), on the occasions you might need something that's not provided in the OS, or via BlackBerry World.
Application suggestions and other shit to come in my next post...
/thread
Application suggestions:
- Total Commander (free / BBWorld): Great secondary file manger ported from Android. Can do things like search within text files and other documents. Also comes with a nifty built-in text editor, media viewer, and audio player.
- Browsie Browser ($2.99 / BBWorld): Alternative web browser that's fast and clean like the stock browser, but sports a bunch of extra features, like ad-blocking that actually blocks network connections to ad-servers. Perfect for when you're only on mobile.
- Renamed Todo (free / BBWorld): Task list management application that actually follows the widely used ToDo.txt format / conventions. Can mange todo.txt files both locally, and in the cloud.
- No Tag Player (free / BBWorld): An audio player for those times when you put a bunch of untagged music on your phone, and just want to play it by directory and file name. While the stock music player is fucking great in every other respect, that's the one feature it's missing.
- FBReader (free / BBWorld): While it's another Android port, it's hands down the best eBook reader for BB10.
- Term48 (free / BBWorld): Fantastic terminal emulator.
- TxtEdit (free / BBWorld): Handy minimalist text editor that supports syntax highlighting.
- WaveRecorder (free / BBWorld): Does what it says. Records audio in uncompressed .wav format, and does it well.
- File Diff (free / BBWorld): A graphical interface to diff. Useful.
- FaceSlim (free / BBWorld): An Android port for FaceBook that actually respects your privacy and freedom.
- Contacts ImEx (free / BBWorld): Export single contacts, or all of them, to vCard or CSV files.
If you need standard Android apps, BlackBerry 10 devices can install APKs natively. I myself use the F-Droid and APKPure applications, and have never seen the need to download any apps from Amazon.
It should also be noted that some BlackBerry 10 devices support wireless charging OOTB (via power mats and the like). My Classic does and it's fucking amazing.
Even the anal retentive fucksticks at ArsTechnica like it: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/02/review-blackberry-10-is-better-much-better-late-than-never/1/
And that's 3 years ago, before updates that fixed the miniscule issues it had (maps and voice recognition are now perfect).
Windows 10 update completly killed my system
Time for linux

Sincerely the best OS, be sure to use XFCE with it, Ubuntu is trash
good ones are
Debian (best one out there)
Fedora
Trisquel (only if you are a freetard)
(pic is my retro Debian desktop setup) Linux is great for customization

NICE!
I run rasbian and I've also riced the desktop to look like win98/95. Your themes and icons look much better than mine though to be honest.
Can you share your screensaver? Looks dope
So has anyone tried baking their GPU to try and fix it before?
Did it work?
Something I'm considering with my recently dead 7870.
>>56332017
Yeah loads of times, it should work.
>>56332017
I mean it can't cause any more harm right? Unless a cap pops and fills your kitchen with tantalum gas...
>>56332017
I've had more success doing this with nVidia cards than ATI's. My recipe was preheat 475 Degrees F for 10-15mins. Any longer and it fried the board lol. Best o luck OP. ATI fanboi fur lyfe
Its the Intel i3-6100
Please show me why im wrong

Used Xeons exist.
>>56332789
Im not sure what model you are reffering to, but the ones i saw has single core speeds kinda sluggish compared to the I3... Meh...
>>56331959
It's a fucking dual core cpu. At least put an additional 50 bucks down for a 6400.
Anyone here with a Moto G4? Why does it feel like everything on the screen has been upscaled? It feels like a special reading or magnification mode has been turned on. The screen size is good but it's a complete waste with how oversized everything is. Is there a way to fix it? Can't seem to find anything related to it in settings except font size, which doesn't really fix the issue.

Thanks, I'll try that out eventually when I root this thing. Just got it today.
There wouldn't be any chance of being able to do it without rooting, is there?
>>56332002
don't know because i've always used custom roms anyway
even on recently purchased phones the first thing i do is rooting
Ok so I'm thinking about buying a Galaxy s6 active with 32gb. Is it worth it?
I've got one. I really like it. I think it's pretty solid and works well for all that I use it for, though my uses are pretty basic. The 32GB is pretty limiting in my opinion, though. I can't fit all my music on it.
It's pretty sleek, and it can definitely survive a fall
Limited because you can't fit all of your music or for other reasons?
>>56331873
Primarily the music, but yeah, just that 32GB can fill up pretty quickly, unless you're really barebones. It's a shame they didn't implement a SD card option for this one, which I think returned for the S7 active
Just went back to an old feature phone. It feels like a weight has been taken off my shoulders.
Fuck smartphones and the bullshit consumer waste it generates. Stay mad "smart" fags.
I wouldn't mind a flip phone if it supported YouTube, Spotify & a full fledged HTML5 browser.
>>56331637
Why would I be mad? I don't give a shit.

Hey /g/, I'm looking for an e-reader. The kindles are too expensive for me, and I don't want the fire because I already have a tablet.
My budget is like, $50. I appreciate any recommendations.
Keep a lookout for deals. I got my Kindle 3 for 20 bucks and it's nearly as good as the modern stock Kindle. As a bonus I ordered a regular one with Special Offers© but it turned out to be a 3G version which can't have Special Offers.

/g/ I'm close to falling for the Noctua meme. Are these truly the superior choice for high air movement and low noise, or is this straight reddit-tier overpriced garbage?
Corsair is better
>>56331283
They are worth the price. I have all noctuas in my case and it's dead silent.

You can find fans cheaper that are as good but if you're okay spending $10-20 more on guaranteed quality then get them
