So back in December, we had a power surge. A few weeks later, my laptop (Asus G55VW-DS71, pic related) wouldn't turn on. The power button light turns on, the disk drive spins, the fans run, nothing happens. The display doesn't light up, external display doesn't work. However, sometimes after attempting to power it on a lot, it turns on. It then works fine until it turns off again, and then it's dead. Any tips?

I have a regular asus laptop, pic related. Never have any problems with it, runs great and this one is well crafted in my opinion.
maybe try taking the battery out, make sure nothing is plugged into the ports including the power cable. Then hold the power button down for like thirty seconds and then put the battery back into the laptop. Then just press the power button and see if your pc boots as normal.

I tried that, no dice.

hate to tell you but it might be hardware related

I knew that. Oh, some other things:
I tried reseating the RAM, I tried taking the CMOS battery out for 30 seconds, (three times) and I also tried the ridiculous "fix" that is holding it upside down.
anything?
Could be the screen inverter.

Would the laptop still work at random and have a display?

I'm not entirely sure. I had a similar issue with what you described, but with an all in one desktop.

Leave it on forever once you get it working.

That's what I've been doing, leaving it on for weeks at a time. One time, it crashed (no bsod, just instant death) and I had to wait 2 weeks for it to turn back on.
Reflow the electrons in the circuitry by redirecting the sine waves and calibrating the temporal electromagnetic field.
Microwave it.
Just replace the motherboard already. It's capacitors are fucked.
Can you remote into it?

Sounds like it wanted a vacation. Take it out, show it a good time, and stop being so demanding. You're overworking your computer, obviously.
