I spaghettied today at the gym for the first time.

So, I've been lifting for two and a half months now.
I'm 6'1-2 and I weigh 94 kg (209 lb)
My first 3 weeks of deadlift I went from 50 kg (110 lb) to 60 kg (132 lb); now my deadlift is at 110 kg (242 lb). Is this a substantial gain?

I'm going to start going to the gym seriously again after being off for about a year and a few months now.

Before I start up again, I want to start right and there were a few things that plagued me earlier when I lifted seriously. The first being that my stomach would always sag and bulge out. It'd never be flat like you see most models. From my reading I apparently have weak transverse abdominals (I think that's how you spell it), and that would make sense since I also had a lot of lower back pain.

Which brings me to the second thing, which is my ass is flat as a pancake and always was no matter how much I squatted. I managed to get up to a 225lb squat before it just hurt my lower back/knees too much to continue. For some reason I can barely feel the muscles in my ass contract, well, ever. It's like the muscle is "kind of" there, and the only way I can really squeeze my ass muscles is if I squeeze my hamstring too. In the process it puts tons of stress on my knee and hurts, and that's just trying to do kickbacks.

Third thing is that a lot of the lifts I do I can never seem to target the core muscles. For bench I would mostly bench with my arms and hardly be able to feel my chest working. Especially the left side, which I can't even manually contract my left pec if I try (probably because of an injury when I was a kid). It makes shit look very unbalanced. Also, for rows, I can hardly feel it in my upper back ever. And after a while leaning over in that positions hurts my lower back.

tl;dr: Weak glutes, transverse abs, and can't seem to get my pecs/upper back working either (most exercises I only feel in my arms/legs exclusively and not the big core muscles)

I have practiced form, and my body always wants to compensate for those weak areas by not using them. So /fit/, before I start working out, how do I do it properly so I have a working ass and core?

The reason you can't feel it in your pecs when you bench is because your triceps are much weaker compared to your pecs. You should do some tricep workouts and then try benching.

I always thought my triceps were pretty strong actually. I'm a lanklet at 6'2" 168lbs, and I could OHP 185lbs for 1 rep at one point, so I figured that correlated into strong triceps. I could be wrong though. I'll try to add a bit more triceps into my routine. Dips always seemed to hit them very well.

Your entire post is indicative of incorrect lifting as you cannot betray the bio-mechanical machine that is your body--your body isn't somehow "favoring" not using your ass or whatever, you're just ...not using your ass. Because your form is shit.

I advise you read Starting Strength many times. Throughout your training. And film every single set you do for the first couple of months and scrutinize it with the literature.

That's what I had to do to make sure I was lifting correctly. I filmed every single set. And I still film sets now to confirm.

You don't have to *do* Starting Strength. You can skip the program and do something else. But the biomechanical information in the book is unquestionably the best out there in terms of clarity, correctness, and ease-of-understanding for a beginner.

you need to be roughly -3,500 kCal/lb lost, so -35,000 to lose 10 lbs. Over 14 days, that's -2,500 per day. At your size your TDEE is probably around 3,000 assuming you are hitting the gym/cardio 5 times a week. You would basically need to go on a starvation diet of 500 cals/day.

I don't recommend this.

/Fit/, I need help finding some links to studies or articles.

Basically, my friend fell for the "cardio kills gainz" meme. Apparently, some PT in our gym told him that if you did cardio, you couldn't build muscle. And by PT I mean fat douchebag who did the bare minimum to get that name.

Anyway, I tried to explain how the reason that myth came about was because if you do cardio, then the calories burned obviously can't go to your muscles. I also explained that if he was that worried, he should just eat more to compensate. I also explained that a stronger respiratory system would mean he'd be able to recover from lifting more quickly, and therefore gain more muscle in the long run.

Anyway, he doesn't believe me because some dumbass "PT" claims that thermodynamics apparently doesn't apply.

So, can anybody give me articles or studies that support this?

Thanks /fit/. Help me save my friend from dumbasses masquerading as professionals.

It doesn't, or at least not in the way you're overly simplifying it. The intricacies of human anatomy and metabolic function create confounds that are not generally accounted for in the basic consideration of "calories in calories out," to the point where suggesting it is setting someone else up for failure.

Unless one is in a totally controlled laboratory setting monitoring every single function of the body simultaneously throughout the day, you can't account for the shifts in nutrient partitioning due to the various functions occurring. And even then, the numbers don't always translate to outside those controlled settings due to changing energy and hormonal demands that occur in various situations (e.g. being stressed out alters leptin and ghrelin levels and response).

Basically you telling him to do cardio while he is also working on lifting would be the same as telling him to keep lifting, but eat next to nothing. It just sets them up to fuck up their body.

Hey guys, anybody with diabetes here?

I'm overweight, ate a completely horrible sugar filled diet throughout my childhood, and I just recently jumped on the gains and weight loss train.

I'm losing weight and trying to get healthy but I think it may be too late. I've been having some symptoms I think might mean I have diabetes.

Symptoms:
>constant fatigue
>normal (8 hours) sleep doesn't refresh me
>thirsty really often, drinking lots of water
>pinky toes have been numb/tingly for a few months

Does this sound like diabetes to you? How would I go about getting checked out for this. I'm a huge pussy and have never gotten my blood drawn. I've been avoiding this because I'm scared but I realize if I don't seek help for these things now I could seriously harm myself in the future.

That said ,see a doctor. Or at least visit web md / mayo clinic online to start. Don't take anything you hear on /fit too seriously, especially if you're talking about diabetes. That's potentially deadly stuff and most of us have no experience with it.

/fit/ what do I do when I am walking and a grill is walking towards me going the opposite direction and I want to show off my gains and not spill my spaghetti every time?

First off when I see a lone grill walking towards me, my hands get sweaty as fuck and I seriously dont know where to look. I try not to stare at the ground like a beta but then that just means that I usually end up grimacing forward trying to look tough and mysterious until I crack an awkward smile because its my defense in stressful situations. Then they usually think i'm laughing at them or a complete sperg.

Also, should I kind of flex my forearms and biceps a bit? should I try to make eye contact? pls help me bros, im no better off now than I was being dyel
