After poking around a little bit a few users on other sites told me that /diy/ was a good spot to have my first try at a pc build reviewed.

So here goes.

I gave myself a budget of $1500 for the actual build to get it going.

I came in just under that goal, and decided to add a backup storage and some new speakers, as my old speakers are simple stock speakers that came with my last pre-built purchase. This brought me up to slightly above my $1500 budget, but I don't mind that at all.

What I'm really looking for is a critique on the parts.

Is there a part that fares significantly better for slightly more? Please tell me.

Is there a comparable part that costs less and gets the same job done? Please tell me.

My head is honestly swimming with the large amount of information I'm throwing at it, and a little nudge in the right direction is welcome.

While true, there will be one guy who tells you to go to /g/, he is in every single one of these threads.
Ill preemptively point him to the >>>/g/ sticky that says

What are you going to do with your PC?

Thats a pretty dreadful video card in comparison to the rest of the build.

I want to make a solar charger for my cell-phone or other devices that can be charged on a usb circuit. I also want to put batteries in this kit so it can hold the charge and be used for later. So my questions are as follows.
>How big will the solar cell have to be to charge two 18650 Li-ion batteries?
>Will these batteries explode on me for some unholy reason?
>Will this project even work?
This is my first real DIY project and I know very little about electricity, so I'm going to need some serious help. Thanks in advance.

How big will the solar cell have to be to charge two 18650 Li-ion batteries?
>pretty fuckin'. Certainly won't be a cute Altoids Tin size

Will these batteries explode on me for some unholy reason?
>If you a noob, then by God YES

Will this project even work?
>anything is possible

Just buy a solar charger/powebank.

>charge two 18650 Li-ion batteries
how fast do you want to charge them?
where do you live?
solar charging is highly innefective.. to charge those batteries in a reasonable time would take a solar panel the size of a small car.

I have a solar charger that has one 3.x V 2000-3000 mah battery in it and it takes about 24 hours of direct sunlight to charge it, panel is abou the size of a credit card.
Ive stuck it in the window for a few days and the battery bar never went up. I think Id need to take it outside and lay it proped up facing the sun to actually charge it.

I am looking forward to the advancements that should be comming is solar tech though.

when you buy your pannels pay attention to the voltage AND the current (amps(a)/milliamps(ma)).

>Will these batteries explode on me for some unholy reason?
if you dont have a proper charging circute, hook the batteries up wrong, over charge them(?), or just generally fuck shit up.. then yes.

>Will this project even work
if you get yourself a good pannel that is very efficient and has good current, and get a good charging circute then yes absolutly.

if you use a panel that is half the size of an altoids box then you are going to stop using it after the first couple of uses because of how damn long it takes.

Need some advice /diy/, and my apologies if this is a stupid question.

So I'm building a stand for our new front end loading washing machine. I have the frame built from 2x4s, but now I need to cut the plywood for the sides and top. Problem is, I don't have a table saw. I do have a circular saw, a jig saw, and a hand saw.

I need some advice on how best to go about cutting the 4' x 8' plywood into smaller pieces (10" x 28" and 28"x28").

okay, i hadn't thought of that. so I can line up a straight edge against my line held in place with clamps?

it's my first project and I don't want to screw up and have to go buy more lumber

Anyone know by chance?

Damn phone rotated the pic. It should be turned 90* clockwise.

Water hammer arrester. They should be full of air so that when a hammer of water comes in it can compress the air like a spring and normalize pressure gradually instead of making the pipes knock like crazy.

Something about your house probably needs them if it has them.
>>

Good to know! I couldn't figure it out from Google, but I know what you mean by rattling pipes!
House built 1890 so I bet it does need them petty bad

I pulled out my old PS2 and some of the buttons on the controller weren't working, so I decided to open the thing. I managed to get every screw out except one (circled). I tried firmly pressing down and twisting, then the rubber band trick, and by that point I had managed to completely fuck it. Now there's a hollow pit where the + shape used to be, and I can't remove it. How screwed am I?
I have a Dremel, but the screw is recessed and I'm concerned about potentially damaging the internals of the controller. None of the screw extractor bits I've seen seem to support such small screws either (the head can't be more than 3mm in diameter)
20 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>904566
carefully drill it out... preferably with a left hand bit if you have one... then fill the pit with some super glue and get a new screw... match the width of the drill bit to that of the existing screws you pulled out.... go slow... use a ring of tape placed on the bit so that you don't drill too far past the depth of the screw (use the ones you pulled out as a reference for how deep that one is)..

again, go slow... patience is key, if you slip the bit and drill the wrong spot it'll make much more work for you...

also the rubber band method is bullshit...
>>
>>904566

Why not go to literally any thrift store and pick up a PS2 controller for pennies on the dollar? I have like 9 of them.
>>
>>904566
>>904569
>dynamite is the obvious answer

yeah, drilling out the center shaft is basically the only option. I don't even know if there are any easy-outs for such small screws.

Hello friends, I have a pretty weird question about something i want to try. I want to paint a knife like the Doppler knives from CS. There's some attempts to do it on youtube but they always use nail polish and the knives end up lumpy and gross. I'm going to be using Testors enamel paints and actual paint brushes to try and keep it as clean as possible. My question is what order should i pain the knife in? the knife is matte black so im thinking silver base coat, blue coat, then gloss black coat on top of that. should i do a black coat over the silver then a blue coat then another black coat? any tips or tricks are appreciated!

It has been painted with black and silver metallic paints using a marbleizing medium, then candy coated. Getting lost in its color can prove fatal

Is there a fish finder that could alert divers to the possible presence of a shark? There has to be something out there that's affordable and would tell divers if there's a large fish around.

Also, if your making a shark suit, what size rings and what kind of metal would work? Larger rings would be easier and quicker to work with.. would copper/bronze/tin work alright? What other options are there besides steel?

And how would one temper the maille? It would basically be made from thick wire... would tempering serve any benefit?
24 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
I'll go with steel.

Cooper and tin are too weak.
Bronze will be very heavy and will rust in green.
>>
>>902429
If you want a shark suit, you should buy it.
Firstly because time is money. How long is it going to take you to weld each of those little rings together? I realize this is /diy/, but in this case it's much better idea to pay to have someone else to do it.
Secondly because, do you really want to trust loss of life and/or limb to something homemade?
>>
Just so you know, from personal experience(anecdotal, but whatever), I had a small pit bull that could chew threw aluminum cans(and part of a storm door once) and copper pipe like it was nothing. I would diy something like this for the same reason I wouldn't diy a respirator or fall harness or anything of that nature;it may work very well, but if it doesn't you may find out the hard way.

big ass capacitors look up on youtube
>>
>>900119
you need an initial force, usually compressed air.
if you load the slug in and apply current you will weld the slug to the rails apparently.
your household power supply will be shit for anything fun. look at diy wind turbines for a generator then connect it to a car engine.
capacitor banks for projects like this will fuck you up. you seriously need to understand the proper procedures and mechanisms for operating, bleeding and grounding capacitor banks before you start building one.
for hv projects you need to be well aware of spark gap distances at operating voltage and maintain proper isolation not only between components but also to you.

oh and don't point it at anything you aren't ready to kill.
>>
A basic pulsed power circuit consists of capacitors, an inductor, and a switch. Add fuses and diodes for component protection.

A simple launcher consists of copper rails held in place by dielectic material and it shoots aluminum armatures.

The closet in my 3rd bedroom has 2 single bulb pull-chain light fixtures in it.

I want to make this closet my network closet, but it does not have a plug in it.

I'd like to replace the 2nd fixture with a plug to power my modem, router, and PoE injector. Is this advisable?

If I was planning to plug a 1000 watt heater into this outlet, I'd absolutely run a new circuit, but these few electronics seem low power enough to not be an issue.

What are your thoughts? Picture related. It's the bulb.

>>
>>904837
Why not inject the PoE somewhere there actually is mains, and use PoE splitters to power your modem and router?
>>
>>904841
But not grounded. It's easy enough to replace the fixture with an actual plug.

>>904847
My modem and router aren't powered by PoE. They need to plug in. Just my AP is PoE.

Get a bunch of 2x6s and use a rafter square to make an appropriately sized rectangle, double up 2x4s at each inside corner for legs, make a ledge around the bottom with furring strip then use 1x4s for the slats.

Hey /diy/, quick question here.

I need to connect a second 3.5" HDD to my cubieboard2 via USB (the only SATA port is already populated).

Power for the HDD is not an issue - I'll hook it up to a 5V/12V dual rail power supply, so I basically need the cheapest USB SATA controller I can get.

The catch is that all the crap on ebay has the combined data/power connector which is a no go because it's 5V only (no good for 3.5" drives).

Rewiring something like pic related seems like too much hassle for something that should be really simple.

So I was looking around online at prefab sheds and got sidetracked and found some prefab dome house kits for sale. This one in particular caught my eye: http://econodome.com/

Their kit seems to be really inexpensive for what you're getting and I was wondering if it seems feasible to build one of these at lower cost than a modular or custom built home and by someone who is not a professional.

How can I keep my cat from scratching my new couch? I work a lot and don't have time to watch her all day with a spray bottle?

bought an apartment, it's pic related

current wall partitioning is shit because oldfags lived here in 1900 then split the space (~160mt square) into 2 small apartments to rent so I'm going to remove everything and start over

obviously there's enough space to do what I want but those columns (which obviously can't be removed) are placed in a way I can't get my head around

I'd like to have at least an open space (kitchen+living room) 2 baths, storage room and 3 bedrooms (one with walk in closet)

suggestions?
