Goys,

This is to report back on my self install A/C adventure. And mainly to piss off Jaded A/C GUY - bet your racing stripes are kinda worthless, huh?

Anyway, > I had acquired a used doublewide - needed new A/C system, but local guys deemed my money less worth it "'cause its too far from the city'". I think it was because of the trailer status more than anything else.
> The trailer had no A/C system to begin with. It only had the floor vents and the furnace innards had been ripped out.

>I settled on a 4 ton self contained by goodman. 14 SEER. I sealed the hole where the old furnace/air handler was supposed to be inside and got rid of that JUNK. Then ran flexible to a metal Y under the house to connect the two supplies on each side of the trailer (via 90-degree metal elbows) to the supply of the Goodman.

> Did a new return air box and placed it under the floor where the Water heater used to be. The Waterheater is now outside in its own mini shed. Opened up a hole in the floor big enough for the return air's CFM into a 18 inch duct back to the Self contained.
>There are two return holes now, one near the center of the trailer's floor plan, and one above the return air box, to satisfy CFM demands, noise levels, etc (shit's that's in the fucking manual).

> After crawling for a while under the trailer, the install was done. TONS of Mastic was used - do not want to mess with this again. The system blows thru a 14 in supply that branches off into two 12 inches, and sucks air thru an 18 in return branched off into one 14 inch opening and another 12 in opening in the middle of the trailer floor plan.

How do I make a wing? I can laser cut the ribs just fine but the actual surface is vexing me. If I cover it with something that can actually be bent over the ribs it will deform in wind, if I use something rigid it won't bend over the ribs. how do they do it? It also complicates matters that I want a curved wing.
17 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
We use cloth. Then paint it with a varnish for stiffness.
>>
>>885661
yep. old school is varnished canvas. New school is thin aluminium over the ribs.

Generally, it's ok that it deforms SLIGHTLY with wind pressure, because it deforms in a predictable manner. you're going to have more issues with the wings flexing if you're expecting it to be totally rigid.

Something more rigid than cloth that may work is steambent wood plys glued up.

I've got a pirate shirt that got washed acidentaly with something red and now it has a pinkishness to it.

I thought about bleaching it, but it was originally a slightly tan color and I'd like to keep that.

What do I do. Pic unrlated.

I considered bleaching it, then washing it with coffee or tea bags to restain it. Think that would work?

I found a TV outside and it seemed to be in perfect condition but the power cord has been cut off. I opened up the back of the TV and the remnants of the cord was this connected to a 3 pin connector thing.

How would I go about fixing this? I've read about splicing connectors but I've never done that before and I'm not exactly sure how that works and what cords will work, most of the guides just assume you have the other end but I don't.

For a test just strip the inner wires and stick them in the end of pic related. If it works then do the job properly.
>>

>perfect condition

Anon, they cut the cord because the TV is FUBAR, they don't want it on their conscience that someone might take it home, plug it in and either zap themselves or burn their house down. Some people waste shit simply because they upgrade to a better model and throw the obsolete stuff out but you really shouldn't fuck around with thrown out electrical goods unless you're a competent electrician and have a barren shed or some shit to test it out in.
>>

Actually a lot of the time people will discard their electronic devices on the side of the road in good working order and people will drive around the neighborhood cutting the powercords off and taking them so they can sell them for their copper.

OK, I want to build my own desk, but I'm not great with carpentry. I currently have a drafting table and a large computer desk which takes up too much room, so I want to combine the two into a single desk.

I want a "drafting table" portion so I can work on my art stuff there, as well as a standard portion which I could put my scanner, tablets, hard drives, etc. on. So I was thinking an L-shaped desk with a drafting table on one side of it. Does /diy/ have any tips/guides on doing this? Also, I'll share my apartment garden pics, as that has been my main project this year.

I also started a hydroponic garden with green peppers. I sprouted the peppers in an Aerogarden, but when they started getting larger, I moved them to five gallon buckets. I'll post a few pictures of those. Anyone who's thinking about getting into hydroponics, don't be intimidated by it, it's super easy stuff and produces quite a bit of stuff quickly. I knew nothing about hydroponics before starting this.

I shouldn't be telling anyone this but here it goes
when I worked at mcd's the real secret, the real way to get the taste you're looking for, is to dip your balls into it, you can't just dip em in real quick though, first, you have to let your balls get some flavor for a few days, it's better in summer time, just don't wash your balls. Then you have to dip em' in there real good, and mix the sauce around with your balls. You want to be careful not to get any dick in there, that's just nasty.

Your DIY home security? Not these kits you buy ACTUAL DIY security. I live in a not so great area in Milwaukee and have this on the back door. It's a cane used as a wedge to make it almost impossible to open. I also put noise makers on there of old bottles and spent bullet casings.

>drill through hinge plate into door frame
> sink in long bolt
> cut off bolt head so it sticks out about 1/4"
> close door and mark where it hits on the door side of the hinge.
> drill that side of the hinge plus a bit so it closes.

Now you can't take the door off even if you take the hinge pins out.

Why? If thief gets in through window and you have double locks they can't open the door.

Can metals be compressed? I've noticed that a metal coin can remain intact with distinguishable features for centuries even in wet environments but some metal things rust away very quickly.

I watched a video of how the US Mint made quarters and the sheets of metal they used looked pretty flimsy and flappy but after being put under a ten ton press those quarters are solid as fuck.

Does compression change metal significantly? Does it actually compress or do the forces just alter the metal?

I have asked a few questions here about smithing and such and you guys always have great responses.

What point would there be to compression anyways?

>>
I know gold and silver coins can be intact and keep distinguishable features for thousands of years... because gold and silver don't really rust or corrode.

But I think I've noticed metal coins resist corrosion much better than other things.

It might be all in my head.
>>
>>881486
Nah, you can't compress solid metal. The main reason those coins seem stiffer than the sheets they are punched from is because they are a lot shorter. The extra length acts like a level and makes it easier to bend them. Shorten them up and they before harder to bend.

My usual technique of clamping workpieces to a table with c clamps when grinding no longer seems adequate. And I've always wanted a vise for reasons of vanity.

What's the best vise for a garage workshop <$100?

Are Harbor Freight vises good?
37 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
I used to use cheap vises at work. Went through 3. Last one we decided not to cheap out and got a Rock River. Big jaws, heavy duty, and got a set of cleats/shoes for it to work with wood and softer metals. If you wont do heavy work on it, go cheap, if you may have some big pieces or use it a lot and dont want it to break... Like always, spend more money.
>>
Cheap vises are good as long as all you want is to hold on to something very hard.
Higher end vises have better jaw parallelism, smoother closing, less backlash and overall better finish.
I have a 40 dollar vise some would call a piece of shit and and an expensive Gressel.
If you don't specifically know why you would need a more expensive one, you don't need it.

Something you want to check for tho is interchangeable jaws to not damage whatever you're working on.

Kinda related, for the lulz :

Ok my dear /diyers/ i went freegan, and i am living off the scraps of upper cast since a month. All is fine and dandy, but I can observe that the food has much shorter shelf life than storebought (duh). I assume that the dumpsterdived food, despite looking good has some spores and bacteria on it that i can't remove using normal washing. Is there some sort of food-safe dissinfectant ( like campden tablets for wine making) that i could bathe vegies and frughts after pre cleaning them?
Any ideas how to prolong shelf life of dumpster dived food?

>>
>>886682
If there was a way to fo that, the transnational food industries would already be doing it, in order to prolong the food's shelf life.

The reason you're seeing the food go off is because *someone threw it in a bin, because it was about to go off*.
>>
>>886689

Wouldn't killing spores and bacteriae help? I was considering tablets with silver for water purification. I know that food that is starting to go off more prone to mold, but maybe removing spores could help, a little. I am heart broken when zuccini gets mold after three days of storage and dies on my before i have chance to munch on it.

Picture is similar to my situation.

I have a old house and long ago someone cut a hole in the floor of my basement. It is about 10 feet long, 2 feet wide and the hole is 12 to 15 inches deep - varies slightly in width and depth - not squared up. They then lined the entire thing with about an inch thick of mortar over hardware cloth. It is dry even during hurricanes, so not a sump. Don't know what it is. They covered it with a wooden platform. Shit I'm sick of it and want to put the floor back like it was originally. The hole wasn't cut with a saw, but some hand tools, so I trimmed the edges square with a concrete saw. But now what do I do? Do I fill it with gravel? Don't want to cart all that gravel. I'm thinking concrete blocks and some kind of metal screen stuff maybe somehow. Help me Concrete Masters!

I'm considering selling home made bread.

It's easy as fuck to make, but people act like you performed a miracle whenever you bake it. Ingredients are cheap as shit, the average loaf of bread costs forty cents to make. But then people who can't bake will turn around and spend $3-$5 for a loaf. Because it's "artisanal".
