Something inside my all-plastic Harbor Freight digital calipers broke and now there's a lot of play between the jaws aka it's useless.
What is the best in-between digital calipers that are better than the chinashit Harbor Freight variety and stupid expensive Mitutoyo/Starrett/etc calipers?? Something very high quality, steel, and guaranteed accurate for $40-60?

the stainless harbor freight ones are fine for $10. take them apart and wash out all the grit and garbage, lube, reassemble. they only get grossly inaccurate when the batteries are dying. buy a stack of fresh maxells off ebay.

So DC motors are pretty interesting, and they are indeed inductors. So that must surely mean that if the magnet inside has stopped moving some kind of resistance should be changing, as such does that mean that it's possible to tell if a motor has stalled?
I want to try and set up a smart motor, that will stop pumping current through when current spikes.

Something to keep in mind that current will also spike when the motor is going from stopped to spinning. Your logic needs to ignore current spikes for a short time after switching the motor on.

Hey electrical /diy/er's. I don't post here often, but I've been doing some tinkering, and right now I have a need for a digital oscillator (5V, square/ pulse output), and I want it to sweep its frequency range upon pressing a button.
In other words, what I want to accomplish is this: when I press a button or something, the oscillator will start at a relatively high frequency (sub 60 Hz), and then it will ramp down and after a few seconds it will be at a low frequency (maybe around 0.5 Hz or less, or completely stopped).
Because this VCO will be routed to some standard 7400 series TTL IC's, I would ideally like to modulate only the output frequency, and keep the 5V amplitude constant.
An astable multivibrator seems like a good starting point (maybe I'm wrong, I am only a neophyte). Pic related is a good ol' 555 timer. Currently, the output frequency is easily adjustable with the 20k Ohm pot, and I'm happy with the range of frequencies at the high and low ends.
I'm wondering if maybe I can make some sort of voltage-controlled resistor rig out of a transistor, and then using a cap to control the ramping-down speed. I could then control the output frequency of the oscillator. But I don't know how to go about this.
Very sorry about the long post, but if you can help me accomplish my goal from the second paragraph, then please guide me, sensei.

555 has built in VCO circuits that most people don't notice. Just build the standard astable circuit and connect your control voltage to pin 5.
4046 is another simple option. It's a common chip with a VCO on it. The circuit is as simple s they come.

Neat, I'l check out that other IC when I can get my hands on one. In the mean time, I'l try experimenting more with pin 5. In the OP pic, its just coupled to ground with a .1uF cap.
I'm just not sure how to get the sort of control voltage signal I want. I'l be playing around with it though, thanks

I am looking to start a simple tool set for my son. My dad kinda did the same for me and when i moved out he gave it to me. It was great to have.
Just looking for ideas for it. Mostly right now its extras of things i have. I have 2 sets of many things and the things i have 3 of the 3rd item im setting aside for him. Hes young now but when the time comes the "set" will be nice and probably bigger then what i got.

I'm looking to buy a torque wrench to change tires on my car, but it looks like they sell wrenches, adapters, and sockets separately. Anybody have any advice about how to buy all three components such that they're compatible?

Im going to be honest, no real need to torque your tires.
Get a 1/2 in breaker bar, and a corresponding 1/2 in socket to fit on the end.
Tighten the lug nuts hard as you can with one hand, do them in a star pattern.
It will be over torqued if you look at specs, but won't hurt it. Remember that the gorillas at the shop use air wrenches to zip the lug nuts on twice as tight as you could ever do it by hand.

Compatible? As long as they are the same Imperial or Metric measurement you'll be fine (1/2 or 3/8 most common).
Your vehicle should have a tire change kit so take the tire wrench to the store to match sizes if you don't have calipers.
Ensure there are no special locking nuts that require a special bit to remove.
Also, If you get a torque wrench ALWAYS RESET IT TO ZERO WHEN PUTTING IT AWAY. It'll fuck up your spring and the calibration.

I built a few "growbuckets". They're just buckets full of water, nutrient and air stones in the bottom. The plants were started in a "fogponics" bucket which is working perfectly with perfect white roots, but when I place them in the "deep water culture" bucket the roots rot and the plants die. I think the water doesn't have enough oxygen, so I'm thinking... is it possible to use an air pump to create some kind of water spray in the water buckets? Kinda like an aerosol can. That's one of the options I'm considering. The other one is using my fogponics controller to make a pump fill the buckets every two minutes and let the water drain out into a bigger reservoir, that way the roots will have time to breath and never dry out.

Sup, /diy/. I made pic related, it's a jar with olive oil and a standard kerosene lamp wick that's safe to burn inside and is non-flammable by nature of the olive oil.
But I was wondering, I've seen people with Poi that change the color of their flames using chemicals such as strontium salt (for red color), and I was curious as to whether or not you can achieve this with a lamp like this while still maintaining the same level of health safety. I don't want to suffocate myself, obviously, so I would like to know if this is possible for indoor use.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks dudes

Yes, it has a very high ignition temperature, but its hardly classifiable as "non-flammable"
As to the salts. Why would you want to add anything that will be burned off, sent into the air as soot for you to breathe into your lungs.
I have no idea what say strontium chloride would do during combustion, but do you think anything good could come from strontium in your lungs?

So I'm visiting my parents for the weekend. They own a vacant house a couple blocks away that I'm trying use as a chill spot for when I can't stand to be around them. Seeing as it's November, it's fucking freezing in there. I turned on the big red switch on the wall (the emergency shut on/off switch for the oil burner) and turned up all the thermostats, but it doesn't seem to be making any difference. I went down into the basement and, as I'm completely unfamiliar with anything appliance-related, I couldn't make sense of the contraption, the furnace. It looks pretty much exactly like the picture here (I know, I should've taken a pic while I was there but it's too late). Anyone know how to get this shit running?

I just made a lock for my desk drawer. I don't really need it but it pissed me off that it didnt have a lock. I wasn't really sure how to do it but ended up drilling a single hole through both the desk and the drawer where i insert a hex key to stop the drawer from moving, and I mounted some metal brackets on top of it with a padlock. Had to do some filing but it took me about 30 minutes.

Are you willing to try again? Honestly, that helmet looks like shit. Get a good pep file and apply bondo in thin layers, sand till everything is perfectly smooth and round. Fill little holes with spot putty, bondo, sand repeat till smooth. then sand some more. Then wet sand. Sanding is key. Spend time on this and you'll have a helmet you can be proud of. Not this turd.
Just measure out some distance from the bottom of the can and cut it. Stick the bottom of the can on helmet. You're done.

you really should. I'm making one now. It's not hard. Put a little effort into it and it'll look great.
For the visor, buy a 1mm plastic sheet, heat and bend. I've seen builds where people have used heat guns. Google and try different options. to make the visor black you'll have to use some form of dye. I'm going to use tint film but I don't know how it's gonna turn out. We'll see.
Have you fiberglassed the inside?
I don't really know where to ask this so feel free to point me in the right direction but how do you convert video files onto a tape?

Lol. Usually people are transferring stuff from tape to files.
There are lots of ways of doing this.You will need a VCR of course. Depending on its age it will have various video inputs on the back. I would recommend using composite video.
One option is that you get a VGA to composite converter like this:
