English is my 2nd language too.
Don't do this, it's just showing off skills you don't have. Cook her the best food you can.
Women enjoy someone that can feed them tasty, different meals. Yes, presentation is nice, but show her good foods, no matter what it looks like. Ratatouille is not a beautiful dish, but it's taste can bring joy.

Well, now it's skills you *do* have.

No-one's gonna expect you to have the ancillary skills a chef has, unless you actually are a chef.

Doesn't mean you're not allowed to go all-out on occasion.

Hey guys, I have question.

Does anyone know if it is possible to harvest silk from other types of worms?

I'm assuming no, because the chinks were total autists about keeping silkworms to themselves, but did anyone try?

no because you need to be asian

Silk comes from the fabric store, it's got nothing to do with worms.

Use spiders instead. They are easier to keep and feed and harvest from. Find the biggest spider you can in your area and start harvesting it. If you want it to have stronger silk, feed it graphene-laced water. You'll have to make the graphene yourself, but it really isn't too difficult.

Hey /diy/, it's my first time posting here, I read the rules and I'm fairly sure that I'm not breaking any of them (I hope). Anyway, I'm a second year EE student, pic related is part of a project that I just finished for school (it's a temperature control circuit, nothing fancy). The thing is, I have this feeling that I'm not actually learning how to solve problems or how to come up with a solution. We're basically just copying existing designs, trying to understand how they work and why, and then we make the thing.
So that is why I'd like to do more electronics projects in my free time. I want to actually understand what I'm doing and produce useful stuff. I'm well aware that everything I'll be building is already available somewhere for a fraction of the cost made in china, but I want to use this as a learning experience and to help me fully understand the subject matter.
I can use oscilloscopes, lab equipment and the vast majority of components from school for prototyping, I can also make single or double layer PCBs there (no multi-layer designs though), I can also design PCBs (pic related) and use basic simulation software (LT spice) before the actual prototyping stage. Other interests would be playing bass guitar, so all kinds of audio related projects would probably be cool.

So my actual question is, where should I go from here? What are some good places to learn about practical applications and designs (not just how it's supposed to work in theory), how can I broaden my horizon and get some useful experience in the meantime?

in the pre-internet era there was stuff like this: http://mobilebay.me/torrent/8301910/Radio_Electronics_Magazine_1980-1992

today, there are websites but it's mostly dumb kids, so I dont really follow any site.
>>
>>907704
That's also been my experience with many forums. It's either people who have absolutely no clue or people arguing over completely irrelevant stuff because they have been arguing over the internet for years on these forums. Not my cup of tea.
>>
the how it's supposed to work in theory is an important foundation of knowledge and a step towards design. how are you supposed to design something that you aren't sure what it's supposed to be doing in the first place? if audio is your bag, start building amps. they range from very simple to very complicated. get yourself a semiconductor textbook and stage it out and build a 10W amplifier. that will be a good use of all of the skills that you have said were relevant, and you get an amp when you're done. if you enjoy that and want something a little more intense, build a better amplifier. design filter banks for equalization. replace your silicon with tubes if you're a sound snob. if analog design bores you, get yourself an fpga and build a digital effects pre-processor that feeds into a class-D amp. build a synthesizer. get a few digital signal processors and make real time filters, equalizers, and other frequency specific toys, phasers, whatever, man. but whatever you do, document. the difference between you and a hobbyist is that you should be able to articulate the theories and annotate methodology throughout the process. you should be able to give not only mathematical models to back up your design choices, but relevant simulation data, and recorded data. you should be able to give accurate accounts of total harmonic distortion, and noise levels of each stage.

Need some help, diy. I bought a generator on black friday. A 5000 watt champion generator. Paid a good price, 390 before tax. Its a gas generator, how can i convert it to run on propane or turn it into a tri fuel generator?

Step 1: Return your sparkling new generator

Step 2: Buy a used generator to fuck with

Step 3: Proceed to fuck with generator
>>
>>907732
1. Don't care about resell value
2. If done right it has barely any loss in total capacity, it may drop down to 4500 running watts since propane burns 5-10% cooler than gas
3. Propane burns 100 times cleaner than gasoline, it will last a LOT longer, the fuel life is indefinite and I dont have to worry about the quality of the fuel
4. its 100 miles to the closest gas station that sells non ethanol gas.
>>
>>907660
I think the Champion uses a Rato engine(it's a Honda knock-off). Google Champion, Rato & propane carburtetors. I've seen a propane carb for about $50.

Would it be a bad idea to use one of those single board computers as a sort of file server?

>Hook external HD to board
>Connect board to network
>Run SSH or VNC server on board
>Port forward to board

Now you can access your files from anywhere with an internet connection. Assuming the security is set up right what else can go wrong?

Be sure to pick a HD that can handle running for extended periods. Some (the LaCie "Designed by Porsche" drives being a good example) run so hot the drive dies after a few months.

I used to tunnel mt-daapd over SSH so I could listen to my music at work, at it worked great. I set up a dyndns service on the server so I could find it from anywhere, and used public key authentication to log in. Just make sure you keep up to date on security patches and there shouldn't be any problems. Also, >>>/g/.

you can also access it remotely, through the interbutts, though i would not put any sensitive data in there if i enable this feature.

Hey /diy/. I've got an old arcade cabinet with a CRT monitor that I've hooked up to a computer to play emulated games on. The problem is, the display doesn't actually... work. It's really static-y and unreadable, even though there's clearly sound and the controls make changes.

What can I do to troubleshoot this? I read somewhere that degaussing might fix it, but I've never worked with a monitor like this before. I could easily just switch to an LCD screen but I don't want to give up on this yet.

Go ask CRT on /vr

You probably have the sync ranges all jacked up. You didn't give enough information for me to think you hadn't. It sounds like you just plugged it in and expected it to work, your video card MIGHT be able to make RGB in a range that tube can use. It might not have a plug for RGB though, and you might not have the sync broken out in a way the arcade wants...

And this is just assuming it works and nothing is fried, which might not be true.
>>
>>907603

It's not actually my project, I just took the job because nobody else in the group gives a shit about this thing. I know about as much as you do, but I can go find out things given instruction.

Thanks for dealing with my shit. I'm not really being very helpful.
>>
>>907605
Tell them exactly what game it's from, but because they can be swapped out for other monitors depending on who repaired it, it'd be better to open the cabinet up and try to find an actual model on the tube, and on the controller board. You'll probably have to google basic arcade machine repair, and don't touch anything on the tube, or powersupply, it can kill you. Try keeping one hand behind your back.

So I'm looking to turn these into shoe laces. What would the lace-holes measurements and what shoes would support those measurements/look cool?

no shoe lace holes will be big enough for the rca plug to pass through, your idea is impossible

Not if I cut the material around the lace-hole, which would widen it.

then all shoes will be fine

I've got some questions about casting silicone and urethane. This can be a general too if you so wish.

So I'm making a small creature for a scupture, that I'd like to cast as a single part. Preferably in skinlike silicone.

>What would be a good sculpting medium if I want to take a urethane mold from it?
>how would you deal with casting limbs in a complex pose (my creature is supposed to be in a fetal position, and while it would be much easier to cast laying flat, I don't know how I'd get it to curl up into a ball...

It'd be great to hear about your projects, whether it's plastic or metal.

Selfish bump.

If I were just building a silicone model, I would cast a wire armature in to make the thing poseable... but I hope to work my way up to casting some light animatronics into the thing--just a servo or two to make it twitch a limb.
>>
>>907428
Don't bump your own thread...
...everything you need to know about casting is available at www.smooth-on.com
>>
I'm pretty sure u need to make model or texture of exactly you would like it to look like then you need to make a cast of that with silicone just make a wooden box to fit your model in to then pour in the silicone I know at my work we use a chamber and vaccume pump to get the air out of the silicone it makes it more dense therefor lasting longer then after its done curing take the silicone out of the box and carefully cut in half making sure to bypass the sculpture inside after that you have your mold I would use latex for skin and silicone for textures

I want to add a weed whacker engine to my bike, saw the above photo and wondered what the diy community thought of attaching a pulley directly to the spokes in a similar fashion to how that sprocket is attached. Please ignore my double post, my fingers are too fat for this phone
>>
>>907347
I didn't think you could OP without text, are you a wizard?

Meanwhile, why belts? Unless you're planning to put the engine on a pivot so it can be tensioned onto and off the pulley to disengage drive, chain drive using the snippers centrifugal clutch should be good enough.
>>
>>907347
You can do that. Just be aware of the torque of your engine or it'll rip the spokes out of their place or bend them at least.

The way it's attached in your picture is usually done with weak engines, that are more like helper in wind, uphill or work as slow sustainer when you're already at speed. If your engine can skid the bicycle from standstill, under your whole weight, the drive-train should be quite robust.

if you're going to use fluxcore for some reason, lincoln NR211-MP is worth the expense over generic white boxed wire, even if you're in europe and paying $20/lb for it.

more generally: turning the power up to 'lightsaber' and laying another pass over the top of a bad weld is WRONG. grind that shit out to base metal and start over.

sparks and spatter fly everywhere and can ignite dry wood on contact and melt through 1/4" of plastic before they cool down, so move all your oily rags, gas cans and whatever out of the area. a fire extinguisher in the workshop is common sense.

A friend wants to sell me a pool table exactly like the one in pic but one leg is broken and I'm assuming the felt is damaged. Do you think it's easily fixable?
12 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>907253
How much? You'll have a very, very hard time matching the leg to the others, and if you don't it will look like shit. Plus, doing felt yourself will look like shit, and taking a wild guess, I'd bet pool table felt is retarded expensive.
>>
>>907253
Felt is easy as fuck to do if yd just the bed and not the rails. If you can repair the leg with wood glue and clamping/staining I would say go for it. But I'm a pool junkie and love to fix pool tables. If it's not an actual slate pool table (3 piece slate, or 1 piece for a bar top pool table) then it's shit and will warp on you

Hey /diy/nosaurs,

I'm looking for a bit of advice. I'm looking to make a chess set a bit like the one in the picture, but out of wood. I just wanted to see what would be the best wood to use, preferably lighter and darker woods obviously. Also what do you reckon the whole project would cost?

African blackwood or ebony for black and maple or something like lilac for white.

Shop around a bit for exotic dowel stock.
http://www.bellforestproducts.com/wood-dowels/

Try to find rubber stamps or make some stencils for the markings.
>>
>>907208
You could buy one type of wood, and simply stain half the pieces.
>>
The two woods you should use are obviously ebony and ivory - they even wrote a song about it it's so obvious.
