Hello DIY.
i dream of some day being able to run a business selling a product to either consumers or manufacturers. i do not yet have a product in mind, however i have recently abandoned a bachelor in health and nutrition in favor of chemistry (chemical engineer), it is my hopes that this education will give me the tools and inspire me to design a product in the likes of chemical compounds for medicinal, construction materials, or even the food industry.
Even though i do not have a product yet, i still feel like figuring out what it takes to start a business, is there anyone in here that has ever tried starting their own production of some sorts, or even tried/are running their own business that could give me some advice as to what/how you did it?

>don't have a product
>don't even have an idea what to sell
Fix both before you start thinking about starting a business.
>>900653
if running a business is the dream that drives my motivation and pushes my ambitions forward, what harm can it do to research ahead?
>>900645
First of all congratulations for not being another wageslave just like all other so called STEM geniuses.
You really need to do market research, dont bother trying to manufacture anything that is already being done startup costs are too high. If you aim for new stuff startup costs will be lower simply because you have no competitiors. For example my first (failed) business was 3d printed statues. If Kodak were doing it Id have gotten nowhere but they werent so i had a foothold. Now ive moved on to delivery drones because nobody has yet come up with a viable petrol design. Beware with new tech people will dismiss and attack you like /diy/ and /sci/ did to me and my petrol drone. Ignore them, they are closed minded fools who will die unknown wageslaves. Apple has billions of haters yet they still sell.
Now on to the details of manufacture. Forget university, you learn barely any practical skills there. Im not saying drop out but dont rely on university to learn the skills you need for it is a theoretical place. Teach yourself CAD and graphic design and get some basic workshop tools. you can sign up for machining and welding courses but I personally just pay other people to do it. Once you can design on the computer and know enough science and maths to not designcompletely retarded things youre golden. Godspeed.
I want to make a ring for my significant other for Christmas.
This is far out of DIY realm, I'm use to working with wood, but I would like this to be made out of some type of metal. If I'm able to put sometime of stone in it, than that would be cool. But not a requirement.
Not looking to put a diamond in it, but some stone if that's possible.
I'm looking for someone to point me in a guide or a right direction. Looked through the google helpful links and didn't see anything.
There are plenty tutorials on how to make a silver ring from a coin. Be creative. Putting a stone in it shouldn't be too hard.
>>900592
What about a wire wrapped ring OP? you can set stones in it. There's a guy [and ill post a link if I can find it before submitting this.] who does these really neat wire woven rings.. does like Celtic inspired patterns and such. and you don't really need much, just a ring sizing bar doohicky some various pillars an snips. some silver wire, a small torch and some soft silver solder.
then its just youtube videos from there.

Anyone have experience with this? Is it worth the investment?
>>900523
over $100 for a fancy vice?
I'd rather just invest in a DIY reflow setup and have my designs enter this millennium.

if you're making a display to sell them for a business, yes.
looks like a bunch of 80/20, stock set screws, aluminum stock, and some stainless steel rod
Bored off day.
Any idea what material I should put these components on? Box doesn't seem like its a go. I'm gonna put the whole thing on a wall. Also, need more spaces cuz I'm fitting in the monitor as well.

Found this key fob from the 70's that matches my car's make and model in an antique shop, but the epoxy emblem is out of place and won't budge.
Safe methods to place it properly?
I don't want to ruin it. I'll never find another one ever again.
Is it safe to heat it with a heat gun to loosen the adhesive?
filp the coin over,
use a heat gun on low. it will pop off.
the imperfection only adds to its charm. check your OCD, nigger.
can I hardware my smoke detectors like this? or would that fuck up the communication?
this is an older home that I am adding the line to, so its not so easy to line them all up in a row

are they supposed to communicate with eachother

RTFM.
if that was the most economical way to do it then i would, why not?

I need alternative ways to make money on the internet, I have some bank debt and am currently unemployed. Does anyone here have any tips, or website that can give me at least temporary financial assistance?
Asking how to make money on 4chan never seems to work. You're going to get people telling you to suck dicks or get a job. Sell blood plasma and sell anything you have and don't need.

Whats the consensus on the safety of pallets for indoor furniture?
I've read articles like http://www.cupboardsonline.com/2011/04/when-trends-attack-shipping-pallet.html but I've also seen countless pallet projects and no nationwide wave of listeria cases and methyl bromide poisoning, so...
>>899768
millions of hipsters build random shit out of pallets and put next to their bed
it is fine
>>899768
Its fine I'm sure. Just don't let the vegans know.
>>899768
Oh wow, even a shitty carpenter could turn all that wood into a proper and nice looking desk.
Instead they chose to just nail all that shit together and it looks fucking awful.
So I bought a nice solid steel Stanley no4 plane for planing boards about 2m or less. At first it kept grabbing, then I sharpenned it a lot, now it only grabs a little. I think the rest is just going to be learning muscle memory how to use it. I've bevelled the blade so it cuts about half the width of the blade with the corners ground back slightly.
I find I can get full length ribbons if I completely throw my body into the plane for the length of the cut. How do hipsters make it look so easy? In pictures it doesn't look like its very hard. Pictures make it look as easy as ironing pants.
Also I am 70kg and I get wafer thin cuts. The blade is adjusted properly. Takes about 10 passes to cut down through the ridges in seasoned pine.
>>899745
Ever shake a cabinetmakers hand? If you had, you would remember it. Its putting your hand in a vise made of dried out leather.
>Also I am 70kg and I get wafer thin cuts. The blade is adjusted properly
One of these statements is contradicting the other. If the blade is adjusted properly then you should every get a nice, thick shaving or you should get bogged down in the wood. If the shaving is thin your plane is either taking too small of a bite or its foot is warped.
>>899766
Well many places on the internet said that the very edges of the planes blade should be rounded off slightly to avoid sharp lines on the edge of each pass and to avoid digging in. They also said that full width shavings would be indicative of a blade adjusted too low. So I sharpenned it accordingly. If I adjust it way out I do get full width shavings. But I am just smoothing the boards and I do get nice shiny boards at the end of it. About 10 seconds worth of 1200grit sanding nets me a silky smooth shiny board.

This. I recently started building cabinets and your hands need to tough as nails (pun somewhat intended).
went to /g/ with this and they recommended i come here for assistance. How can I make this go faster than it does? it was free so i dont care too much about it, /g/ said either:
>swap motors
>weight reduction
or
>use better batteries
its wet cause i drove it in light mud, but it is brand new. help me kindly /diy/ please and thank you.
take apart a laptop battery and use those cells instead. Make sure it's fully charged before you take it apart.
Tape in 9V. Connect small terminal to top left, and big terminal to bottom right (as pictured).
>>899732
replace the motor with a brushless motor. A 1 KW brushless motor should make it go really fast.

/diy/ is very slow. You don't need to bump your thread. It will last over a week even if nobody bumps it.

Im planning on building a brandy shop and destilling my own gin for private comsumption.
Does anybody here have any related experiences or advice to share?

just got a bag of whole corn , goin to malt n mash it , anyone interested ?
>>899461
this
get a thermometer and put it on top of you still..
and watch the temperature, once it goes over ~75C it should be mostly ethanol and water wait for a few drops to wash out the residue in your condenser and you should be safe to collect...
as an additional test you can lite a small amount of your distiled portion on fire and look at the color of the flame, methanol with a slight yellow to orange flame tip, while ethanol is pure blue
I got sick of paying cable so i cut the cord. I picked up a Clearstream 2V for really cheap and i have had very good results with it. I am pulling in more channels than i really should be. But i am wondering if i should ground the j mount i have read so many different things about grounding. From you have to ground it to the electric meter to you dont need to ground the pole just the cable via cable ground block unless you actually have a mast in the ground. What would DIY do?
>>899279
Unless it gets hit by lightning, which is very doubtful, you don't 'have' to do shit.
>>899281
Someone told me that even if i did ground the mast and it got hit by lighting that even 6-8 AWG ground wire would turn molten and possibly catch shingles on fire. He told me to rout it though electrical conduit to keep it from catching the roof on fire. So it sounds like im fucked either way so i think im just gonna skip grounding the mount.
>>899288
if lightning strikes your antennae it will be worse on your house than if it was earthed with a 6-8 AWG ground wire
Okay folks, I was basically given an ancient RV. I was originally going to scrap it, but considering that I actually got the 440 running with minimal effort, and after I ripped out the nasty-ass 70's interior found that it didn't have a wooden frame, but a nice stamped c-channel frame, I've decided to keep the big bastard. Here's the thing. My wife is a nerd. BIG TIME. I want to redo the inside to look like a spaceship from tv or movies. Budget isn't really a problem, because I have tons of time to finish it, (Dec of next year) so keeping the funds flowing won't be hard over the long term.
My question is: What's the coolest doable interior you have seen on a spaceship? The more info you can give me on a show, the better. Thanks guys!!
>>899098
what era are we talking? many different versions of futuristic spaceship design. personally I love the 50s predictions versions. much easier to replicate, too.
>>899098
If your wife is a nerd then she has to have a favorite scifi show. Trek, wars, who, 5, gal, etc. Use that as your theme.
>>899104
That's the problem. I asked her, and she named off about 2 dozen. Everything from the millenium falcon to Firefly(serenity) with a few jaunts into 2001 and forbidden planet. This is going to be a total surprise for her, so I can't pick her brain too much or too often or she will start asking too many questions.
