I'm trying to setup a virtual machine of Ubuntu for school and its going well.........at least up until the part where a section of the screen to the right is missing and I cannot hit the next button to finish installing it

Is there any way to fix this or did I do something wrong while installing the whole VMware?

Dunno, I use Virtualbox (even though Oracle is evil).
>>

Tab should let you switch between the two. Or arrow keys.
>>
>>901917
It'll be something wrong with Ubuntu, not something wrong with VMWare.

If it were Windows, you could just tab around the dialogue and press the button even though it's offscreen. Linux has historically been terrible for keyboard accessibility, and I doubt it's improved much, but you could give it a go. Alternatively, why not use the console-mode installer? Even Ubuntu can't fuck that up.

Why are you doing the setup by hand and not using VMWare's Express Install, anyway? Alls you do is answer a few questions in VMWare's wizard on the host, and the guest boots up, installs its own OS with no interaction required, and when it's done you can start using it immediately.

Hi /adv/, does anybody have experience making a bed that they'd like to share?
My cabin has an 8x8 room which will be the bedroom. I like big beds and there couldn't be jack of floorspace anyway in an 8x8 room so what I plan to do is have the whole room a bed (that lifts up for storage underneath)
How would one go about making a bed? One that lifts up for storage underneath, at that. I imagine I'll probably have to have the mattress custom made since 8x8 is even bigger than a california king. Bedmaking thread!

The mattress itself I'll probably have made through ultrabed.com but I'm wondering about the frame itself that the mattress part sits on.
>>
Check to find any local manufacturers.

Where i live theres a mattress company that makes all the mattresses they sell to the public. Extremely high quality, and pretty reasonable prices too compared to the name brands being sold by third parties.

They made a custum bed for me to fit this oooollld mahagony bed frame i got at auction that was between a full and queen size. The owner came out to my place to double check my measurements. Delivered it three days later personally to check the fit himself. All for the same price as an equivalent featured serta
>>
>>901874
You would have to get a pneumatic system to move the top frame up and down, but its dangerous and really expensive.

make a decently tall frame using thick studs on the end so you have enough room underneath.
Or you can make a regular height bed, frame it out, then install roll out cabinets below.

Hey guys I've got a problem with my water heater tripping a breaker in the breaker box. When we first discovered this, we flipped the breaker back and it stayed on, the water heater started running again and after about 20 minutes it kicked the breaker again. At this point it kicks off immediately after flipping it on. Does this sound like a Tstat issue?

Are water heaters something that I should call an electrician or a plumber for? I talked to 2 electricians (who didn't come out), one said it was probably an element going bad while the other suggested a problem in the breaker box itself. I'm not sure where to begin and I have next to zero experience with this sort of thing so I'll definitely have to call someone at some point, though I have family friends who I'll probably call first (cheaper and faster)

Pic somewhat related

Can anyone on here help me fix my dryer?
I've got a kenmore elite that seems to have a short somewhere in it. I'll be posting some pictures and a short video as well.
I am no electrician, but I imagine if someone were to assist me in the process I might be able to figure this out.

What's a cost effective way to attach myself to a tree to do this?

Notes:

I was thinking of getting some rope, a carabiner, and making myself a rope harness. I used to climb, so I know how to use them, it's just that rope is $120, and I have no idea where to buy rope/carabiners in the US locally.

Allow me to retort: If I fall, I am probably going to fall on my feet and break both of them in the process, but not die. The tree is like tree stories high - not fatal fall height.

So far Home Depot and Dicks don't carry rope. Wtf fgts.

The fuck is what on your smoke detector battery? It has a smoke detector on it if that's what you're asking.

No seriously, just pop the battery off the connector. It's not rocket science here, just a 9v battery terminal.

See, I tried that, but the connector wouldn't let it go even using a screwdriver as leverage.

I would like to make a security system that can notify me remotely that a motion sensor has gone off.

Is that possible? I want them for the primitor of my property outdoors.

How would you like the system communicate? Wifi, cell, radio, land line, etc?
>>
>>901624
I have Wi-Fi at home but am not always on Wi-Fi at work. But I have a 4G LTE phone. Can that work? What about radio? How far in miles can they work? I work about 15 miles from my house
>>
>>901625
I meant for the security system itself. It needs a way to dial out to you. If where ever it is going to be placed is within range of wifi then that would be the best and cheapest option. Next best would be using a land line or a cell network for connectivity but they both have monthly costs. You would only roll a custom radio solution if you're so far out in the sticks that there is no land line or cellular options.

Hello /diy/

I have a small project where i need to power about 2000 LEDs. Just normal 5mm 3v leds. How would i go about doing that? I was hoping some old computer charger could do the trick, but i'm far from an electronics expert, so i don't know exactly how. I dont need to be able to control any of them individually, they have to light up all at the same time. I was hoping to make a big grid, and wire all of them in parallel, so i can hook them to a single power source.
If i did that, and have a 19V DC computer charger, what would i need to do, so i don't toast them all? Would it be enough to put a resistor on + or -? If so, how big would it have to be?

I'll of course post pictures when it's done

Any suggestions on how to make one? Fire is the primary option

Pool maintenance fag here. You need at least 2 inch pipe to get sufficient water flow.
>>
A buddy of mine owns/runs a tree trimming operation. He heats everything with wood. Has a wood boiler for how water. One for heating the house including radiant floors. Runs a smaller third one for heating a pool.

The units aren't cheap but you can't legally /diy/ your own without getting it tested which would costs tens to hundreds of thousands. Plus he has unlimited wood.

You could possibly /diy/ your own pool heater because it's probably not subject to the same requirements as a water heater or boiler.
>>
>>901436
There is such a thing as a wood-fired hot tub. Basically, it's a firepit inside of some tubing that water from a pool flows through. Should be a good starting point.

I have a PSU similar to this (this is just a Google image) and I've broken it.

When I was charging a battery with it a while ago, I noticed that once I turned off the PSU, while the battery was connected, the voltage needle indicated the voltage on the battery. Based on that, I assumed that you could also use a PSU as a voltmeter.

Then I tried to do the same thing again some weeks later and, I don't know why, but the wires immediately went super hot, burning my fingers and melting the plastic sheathes.

Now the thing doesn't turn on. Why did this happen? And why this time and not the last time?

Also can it be fixed? What am I likely to have burned out? I've looked inside and can't find any signs of a burned component.

Assuming the PSU uses normal components: no particular reason why it couldn't be fixed.

This is not about the password!

An old Fujitsu laptop won't boot except from HDD. The BIOS password works, but the BIOS itself is altered and won't allow changes to the boot order. This makes it impossible (for me?) to flash the BIOS.

Now I assume disconnecting the CMOS battery will not erase the password. But will it reset the BIOS to factory default?

I take the password still working as an indication that it is saved outside the BIOS, which I assume is hacked. So if removing the battery does not affect the password, will it affect the BIOS?

Could the problem be something else entirely?

Is there a way to fix it?

I won't pay Fujitsu service fees when the same money would buy me a new computer.

I asked /g/ but they didn't answer.
19 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
No, removing the CMOS battery won't change the BIOS code... Sounds like you need to reflash the BIOS directly. You're probably not interested in investing the time to do that, so learn your lesson and buy a new one.
>>
>>901240
yes disconnecting the cmos battery will reset the password and clear the cmos. which is like the ram that the bios runs in. it will also force the computer to refresh the cmos.

source: used to work in a computer store where the same customers would repeatedly return because their password "simply didnt work but they were typing it in properly." some laptops require long disassembly in order to access it.

the password is saved in the cmos, not the bios. even the fancy drive locker bios shits can be simply reset and tada! the hard drive is no longer "encrypted"
>>
>>901245
I also recommend adding an easily accessible switch or just a wire or pin of some sort that allows easy bios resets by just opening the hard drive bay or wherever.
