anyone have experience using photo Interrupters?
how accurate could this one be if i was to program a microcontroller to count the interrupts to determine a motor's position?

What happened to our OP?
We used to have a pastebin.

I am trying to compile a shopping cart of components for the matchless metal detector found here: http://www.geotech1.com/pages/metdet/projects/matchless/matchless150c.pdf
Can someone look over it and let me know if it looks good? I wasn't too sure about the following:
14 pin DIL IC socket (I could only find exact on ebay for ~$17)
ICM7556IPD (Ebay)
BC549C(Again, could only find on ebay)
.01uf ceramic disc (listed as 50v, will this work?)
500ohm pot in place of 470ohm
Couldn't find:
.001uf resistor polystrene (Does it have to be poly?)
I forgot:
A switch
My cart contains a CMOS 1555 and a 14 PIN IC Socket which I thought might work instead, truthfully I have no idea what I am doing. Do I need the components from ebay? Are there any US based companies anyone knows that stock these?
I did some electronics work back in highschool and I am fairly confident I can limp through online schematics enough to enjoy some things I can build that may be out of my price range on my salary. I am willing to learn, any suggestions helpful.
Hi /DIY/. I was wondering if you can offer a little advice on my costume. Basically I'm doing a classic robot, complete with cardboard boxes and that flexible aluminum tubing (basically like pic related). I'm building a couple of things to make it a more realistic robot, eg flashing LEDs, robot voice box, etc. I want to include a couple of motorized functions, which is where I need your help. I already have an arduino uno and two motor sheilds.
First motorized function is to make the head spin all the way around. Keep in mind this is basically just one cardboard box spinning on top of another. How should I hook up the motor? Is there some sort of material that I can use as a gear around a neck, or should I figure out how to 3d print a big old 10" gear, or what? I measured, and it turns out I need a 10" collar to be able to fit my fat head through it. Also, is there some kind of bearings that I can use to help it spin, or how can I mount the head to the body so it can spin freely? How strong of a motor am I going to need to spin the head, assuming it weighs, say, 2 lbs and has friction of cardboard against cardboard?
Second motorized function is just to open a small door on the front of the robot. I have a small metal fuse box that I'm going to mount in the front, and I'll just need the motor to open the door with a lever or something. Any advice on how to gear something up so that the motor, which spins, can move a metal plate through the motion of opening it? Sorry, but I'm just not a very mechanical person, and I just cant visualize a simple system for opening a door through a 90 deg. swing. Should I use a linear actuator that pushes at the top of the door? how strong would it have to be?
Sorry if these are trivial questions, but I'd appreciate your help.
A picture of the fuse box I want to mount.

IMO easiest way to achieve the spinning head would be to mount the motor on top of a hat or helmet, and have the robot head be attached to the motor and not attached anywhere else on the costume.
>>889800
That's a pretty good idea. I can mount the electronics, including the motor, on top of a helmet. How much motor, and how much battery would you think is required? I was initially thinking of wiring 2 big 6 volt lantern batteries to make 12 volts that would last all night. I was thinking mount the batteries in the chest and run a pair of wires up the back of the neck to the helmet. I was thinking of a motor like

Does this seem like enough?
Tig Welding student here. 1st month, I have 3 to get the trade. Any suggestions you guys can offer would be appreciated.
yeah, Aluminum over heats too quick. Keep a rotation of practice pieces going so you do not keep practicing with a too hot piece and you get a different weld each time
I'm currently trying to walk the cup and its a bitch
patience... seriously.
Rotate between 3-5 pieces you have set up. If your instructor says anything... explain why. You will actually spend more time welding rotating pieces than to stop and let shit cool.
When you get fucking pissed...which I am sure you will; take a break. Smoke, get a drink, do push ups.
If you are doing fine precision work avoid stimulants....like coffee.
Smile.Take you licks and fuck ups in stride and bury them.
Don't know if I should post this on /g/ or here, so I'll try here first.
In this hypothetical scenario, let's say some people do some really bad shit with a raspberry pi. "Bad shit" meaning hack a bunch of banks, remotely set off some bombs, run a massive child porn distribution network, or anything else you can use a small, cheap disposable computer you can buy with cash for.
What are the consequences for the other legitimate users of the raspberry pi and similar tiny computers?
Do you think we'll see some outright bans or restrictions on computers once sensationalist news articles about the "$25 terror computer you can buy at radio shack" get published?
>sensationalist news articles about the
stop right there. nobody in the news is going to know or care what that circuit board is or does. I think the closest historical analogy is GPS units which what, get banned in 3rd world countries worried about spying? another similar situation is lab glassware: there are a few unenforced restrictions but it's trivially easy to buy whatever online.
The Pi isn't suited to any of those tasked you described. However what it is good for is attacking wireless networks. Get a small container, add a PI and a battery and you have a mobile hacking machine that costs less than $50. Produce a ton of them and drop them all around the target you want to hack. Government has already explored this and as such they're invested in it. They won't place a ban.

let us not forget clockmed. "misunderstood genius" will come to mind. although if they are discovering rpis then I assume that they will go off as successfully as the unabombers many shitty bombs that never did anything or only took a few fingers.

why do hams get so buttblasted when i fart and burp into my baofang handheld transmitter during their sunday meetups.
Bonus- is there any group of hobbyists more autistic than hams?
>>886467
4chaners. Read yr post, it should be pretty obvious why....if I was trying to talk to someone and kept getting cut out by some dumb shit....
keep doing it though, fcc might come to your birthday party. I've been listening to hams look for a couple of guys around my city, got a couple last year, turned them over to the fcc.
diy anons, I need some ideas.
I bought a house with gas furnace and electric water heater
I'll switch to a gas water heater quite soon
The furnace's intake is a short pipe drawing air from inside the house and I'm pretty sure the water heater is based on the same principle
First step would be to route both intakes through a wall to make them take outside air
I'm sure this will improve the efficiency a bit and (lack of) humidity a lot in the winter
Because I have some time before the cold weather comes I started thinking about improving things even further:
Put a metal tube (intake) inside the plastic tube (exhaust) to have some sort of heat exchange and keep even more of the heat inside the house
The only unsolved problem seems to be supporting the metal tube inside the plastic tube
So far the best solution I came up with are some short tubes wedged between the big and small tube (in section it will look like a planetary gear).
Anyone has better ideas?
Thanks in advance!
Yes, I'll use a larger exhaust tube than required
Yes, I'll seal everything right
Yes, I've worked wit both metal and plastic tubing before
Problem with your idea is it will not pass inspection
>>886444
don't they make int/exh combo tubes?
>>886444
what inspection?
terrible news gang, i "accidentally" punched a hole thro my wall.
imma gonna hit up the home depot and truy the "California fix" (according to yt)
if anyone has advice or tips on this id apprecuate it a lot
gonna bump with TES morrowind photos for a few post, will dump if yall help me out big time
>>886289
gonna selflishly bump with a few morrowind pics
>>886291
c'mon guise
just a little pointers would be appreciated, porb one bump after this then i'll just give up and go to home depot
Cut hole.
Cut drywall same size as hole.
Tape, mud, sand.
Paint when dry and flat.
Watch paint dry.
done.
Hey /diy/! Any sample code for Arduino light switch?

Try Github?
Hey /diy/, how would you recommend I cut this where my fingers are? I have access to a metal shop but haven't been in there for about 4 years. It's stainless steel.

With a hacksaw.
so.. I just found this but the charger doesn't work and I was wondering if I could make it usb any tips? warnings?
also this I think it might be important
Probably the easiest thing would be to just cut the wire off the charger and solder it to a male usb to make a cord.
>>885812
Charger is 5.2v, usb is 5v
Should be no problem with just cutting the lines and splicing them together
i need a good idea on hween costume for school contest
believe me this doesnt have to be a 100$ + costume all i need is somethign original
the school isnt very original most of the costumes are bought in regular stores
last year a kid that had costume made out of boxes and foil as well as metalic tubes for arms and stuff made out to look like a robot won
so you can see that much materials dont have to be needed like iron man suits and shit ya know?
comment ideas if you can thatd be great

Halloween
how do you not understand that?

its a horse costume.
Hi, my bike is kind of broken
When i use it the pedal falls of, i foud out that the nut fell of and i put it on again but it keeps falling of
Im thinking about soldering it directly but im not sure i give your advice
Here's a pic of the nut
Take the nut up to your local hardware store and grab a matching size locknut
They have a little insert that grips on the shaft to prevent it from backing off
>>885590
Are the threads undamaged on the nut and the bolt? If they're not, replace or repair the threads.
Alternatively, get a lock nut, or pour locktite all over your nut. Not sure how long that last solution will last.
what are these used for? can I strip paint from wood with them?
also give me general advice on renovating my room by myself.
>>885534
yes they can
general advice: wear safety
>>885534
grinder brushes are for removing stuff from metal. they will damage wood. (you may *want* that damage for a weathering effect, but anyway)
the normal way that you strip latex paint from wood is with a heat gun. you heat the paint up a couple hundred degrees (until it begins to form small bubbles on its own) and it softens enough that you can just scrape it off without any chemicals
>>885534
You're better off using a heat gun and sand paper.
Wire brushes would scar the wood a piece of piss.
sorry if there is a better place for this, never been here before
Is there an easy way to get the picture on the wood?
>>885378
Works on wood.

thanks! I'll pick some up and try on some scrap wood first
Any welders in da house?
how much would you charge someone to fab and weld this frame???
Have you figured the cost of materials?
>>885325
Material supplied.
Only interested in fab costs.
