Not sure if this is the correct place to post this. But in all seriousness, can someone tell me what this tool is? In a way it reminds me of a old lathe indicator, but the only thing that turns is the pointed tip, but it doesn't move in or out, just moves the dial. No markings that I can see on it
Is there any way to connect the optical drive port of a laptop to USB 3.1 port so i can use a eGPU on my laptop?
>>1043700
I'm not very good at this and i'm still researching, but i need some guidance. Did someone else transform their useless optical drive to a Thunderbolt 3 port?
No. The protocol is completely different. Plus external GPUs don't use USB 3.1, they use thunderbolt 3.

So there is no way for me to connect an eGPU to a laptop with 3.0 usb?
Aspiring jewelryfag here, i want to do wax loss plaster casting of jewelry, particularly rings.
Modern shops seem to use centrifugal force to feed the molten metal into the cast, but I'm poor and don't want to drop a grand on a glorified merry go round
Pic related is my idea for a gravity fed casting system. The melty bit is a crucible designed for centrifuges. It has a hole on the left side, which leads to a funnel. The mold is basically a steel can with plaster of paris in it, and the funnel leads there.
To use, heat the crucible with the metal via torch. Should probably add boric acid because i read that it helps with bubbles. Then when it's melty, rotate the setup so the metal pours into the mold.
It looks like it'll work to me, but what does /diy/ think? Anybody with experience in this sorta thing would be much appreciated
Shameless self bump
>>1042633
Why not just pour it by hand? Is there something I'm missing here?
>>1042633
You can make a centrifuge out of a $5 swap meet bicycle dude...
What can I do with 7 different types of bottles? There are 35 of them in general. I thought about making some bongs, but I would have nothing to do with them later...
Sterilize bottles
Make fruit syrup
Fill bottles
Store for the winter or whole year round for fruity delight
Don't you have a mother to disappoint?
Rifle.

>What can I do with 7 different types of bottles?
Shove them up 7 different types of ass.
Hi guys, this is my truck, a Ford Ranger 2000 and i want to upgrade all the accesories, the engine and even repaint... i cant find any nice hacks for ford ranger trucks, neither the engine diagram... can u help me?
thanks in advance
>>1041047
1. rip that piece of shit engine out of there
2. get a 5.0 and trans from a mustang
3. img related
Or for some real power go 2.3 turbo.
Replace your one with a Ranger T6 or the all-new one.
Neither are Rekt's, both are solutions.

>baling twine
believe it or not, i once fixed a crt tv with it (back in the nineties). channel switcher was loosey-goosey sometimes the tv wouldnt get any reception (solder joints between channel switch daughter board and main pcb broken). i was out of solder so i just strapped some of that twine around the daughter board pcb and tied the other end to the bottom of the case insides, making sure it stayed somewhat tight.
completely forgot about it the next day (was supposed to go get some solder to properly fix that) till the crt broke for good about 5 years later or so. good times
Why do the fluorescent lights in this lobby fuck up so badly like this? They have been doing this for ages, and it is always in some random, fucked up manner.
>>1044221
Looks like a bad ballast. Fluorescent bulbs need to be lit by firing a pulse of high voltage at them. Then the ballast takes over and controls current draw. So if the ballast is failing and giving low current the bulbs don't light up entirely.... Hence what you are seeing.
>>1044221
the LAMPS (yes this is the correct term. fluorescent LAMPS) are bad. the ends are black the lamps need to be replaced. its unusual for ballasts go go out in every fixture like that. its probably the lamps old age.
If they do this while they're supposed to be off, it's because you've either got leakage (in case of an electronic switch; dimmer, etc, anything with semiconductors), or because you're switching neutral instead of live (in case of a traditional switch).
If you switch neutral instead of live, the lamps will couple slightly to the grounded metal fixture, and enough current will flow from live, through the lamp, through the air, to ground through the fixture, in order to light the lamp slightly.
Any suggestions?
Bottom of the console is bent as seen in the picture and won't turn on.
Take the bottom cover off and take more pics.
Is the battery inflated?
Did you find it on the street?
My new office chair's cylinder cover thing was put in slanted so the chair tilts awkwardly. Feels like I'm falling forward if I turn one way, and that I'm leaning back if I turn the other.
I think it's this thing's fault.
Problem is, it's jammed the hell in there. How do I remove it without making a lot of noise or breaking the star wheel holder?
>>1044075
You sure it's not one of the wheels that's fucked up? That can throw it off balance.
>>1044079
The wheels are perfectly fine. It's gotta be this black thing. Looked at it from different angles, it's definitely bent.
Hit it with a rubber mallet on the bottom until it pops out. Or put a piece of wood on the bottom of the cylinder and whack it with anything until it pops out.
I live on 3 acres in southern Louisiana and over the years the land has settled and sunk down enough to where I can't use gravity to drain water to the ditch. Not all of my property is this low, just a few spots. So I researched some drainage options and french drains seem like a good route. My question is: can I use french drains to collect and evenly distribute the water by letting it seep out back into the land? My initial thoughts are probably not because I'm still stuck with the same amount of water on my land so it would just pool up evenly instead of in the few low spots. However, if I run enough perforated pipe, could it even it out enough to where it doesn't pool up and just goes back into the ground?
My other option is to dig a reservoir and use a sump to pump it out to the ditch, but I'd rather not use that option unless I absolutely have to. Advice?
There's a few issues here. How high is the ground water in your area? You will want to keep this away from any buildings as this could cause sagging.
You could always build a big ass pond and pipe to i. use the soil from the excavation to fill the lower spots.
>>1043977
Op should dig a pond cause then he has no water and a nice pond.
I intend to make a diy laptop from pc parts.
The parts i can afford.
Motherboard GIGABYTE GA-H110M-S2HP
GPU GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1060 Windforce OC 6GB DDR5 192-bit
CPU Core i5 6400 2.70GHz box
16gb ram
HDD 500gb 7200rpm - generic
A very low profile keyprofile that can fit the suitcase.
For a display i'm gonna buy an LCD display from ebay that fits and a LCD connection kit from ebay.
How do i attach laptop batteries to it?
>>1043917
You need to connect the + to the motherboard and the - to the cpu, you need adaptors for this but you can just tape down with electric tape
>>1043918
lel
I was also thinking to just put in a power source and have a in-room mobile desktop. I hate sitting at a desk, i wanna stay in bed and play.
What do you think?
>>1043920
you can just get a power extension cord
I have a pile (40 or so) soft firebrick (A-26) made by A. P. Green.
Was considering a forge but this brick is soft as fuck.
Any other projects to consider?
inb4 wood fired oven, already have the hard brick for that
crematory
They'd make a pretty good garbage can filler until garbage day.
>>1043876
Sell them to me at an affordable rate?
Buy some "liquid fire brick, grind those soft up, mix and poor 4 foundry?
If u dont abuse them they will make a fine forge.
I have a plaster or paris and sand foundry. It works
Looking to make an aluminum estus flask from dark souls.
I have the aluminum, and the means to melt/cast it, but I don't know what I could do to make a perfect, hollow shape like pic related. And on top of that detail and yellow color.
What do?
Still need help
This is a very slow board. Your thread will be up for days. Give it a bit.
Anodise it
There's a DIY in the archive for non-sulphuric acid anodising
Specifically for AS/NZS 3760:2010 which I assume is similar for every other developed country.
What I want to know is: How can I test 3 phase 415V 32amp current leakage on a machine that is relay/soft start without an expensive secondary tester?
Acceptable earth leakage is under 5 mA.
Is this really as simple as making up a short "extension lead" with exposed earth wire (pic related) and measuring current across the earth with a clamp on ammeter while machine is running?
>>1043612
yep, that's literally what you're testing.
personal opinions time: i don't think you can trust a clamp meter down in the single digits of milliamps.
also testing that way won't account for unintended earth paths like instrument wiring or buried rebar.
and i'm sure the leakage limit is allowed to be much, much higher than 5mA if a machine has a commando plug and a correctly sized earth conductor.
Thanks.
I've been looking at "good brand" mA clamp meters for around $400 NZ which beats the $1500 adapter I was quoted.
>>1043845
what the heck is wrong with directly connecting your meter?
I had a woman come up to my home, seemingly a city worker, and ask me a few questions about my recently purchased home. Confirming bed/bath number, confirming crawlspace, and down payment. Then she went around the back yard and took a few pictures. Is this normal?
Also, i'd like to know if there are any good DIY home security measures beyond get a gun.
Probably normal, probably fine. Always ask for ID and a contact number. If you get suspicious call the contact number they gave you, and if you get really suspicious call the po-lease. Unless you live in an utter shithole where the cops are speeding around town all day arresting petty crooks, drunks, and shoplifters they're normally thrilled to take calls like this.
>in my sleepy little town the cops reckon it's their town and they run the place, and anything the town gov't does or anything salesmen, inspectors, solicitors, etc do behind their backs pisses them off. they love the opportunity to intervene and obstruct and flex
that sounds suspicious as fuck
