Hello 4chan. I like this kind of hats. The attached files are pictures of the manga Shigurui. I don't want the conic one with horizontal braiding everybody usually sees, but this model, with flat top and a big knot above, holes for watching, and end of the straws ascending back.

I have no information on the material. I tried with young and slim bamboo and it was solid but I didn't managed to make a hat (first photo). The result is very bad, I just passed the vertical stems alternately front/back of the horizontal ones. The shape is not correct, but when I tried to bring closer the horizontal rings each other, the bamboos coerced and the structure broke. So the last time I let it in the actual shape it could support.

Next day I tried with bulrushes, the result is a little better, but not managed either (2nd picture). Bulrushes are more easier to work but when I try to bring the rings closer the bulrushes broke, cause this is less solid than bamboo.

Last picture with the man standing up was picked on the forum there : http://www.dagorhir.com/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=46711;area=showposts

If you have advice or you know video that shows how to assemblate, or what material it's made of, please tell me. Thanks.

So I sant to make an alien doll like pic related. I'm thinking about some kind of foam, but I dont know what kind. I want it to have flexible arms. Should I make it from two kinds, so the body and head can be hard and just carve the face on it, and use a softer one for the limbs?
Any ideas welcome.

So I got a coffee table from my folks they had when I was a kid. What I'd like to do with it, if possible, is: (1) re-do the varnish, (2) not sand the scratches off (most of the scratches I caused as a kid so they have sentimental value) and (3) not have to restain it (not absolutely necessary, just prefer if I don't have to).

Doing a little googling, seems like a chemical stripper is the way to go rather than sanding so I can save the scratches. I have two questions though that I can't figure out: will all chemical strippers remove the stain in addition to the varnish, or are there kinds for just removing the varnish? Also, if I do have to restain it, will the scratches be super emphasized when I apply new stain? (google just has stuff about removing scratches/old stain altogether, also pic isn't of exact table)

Whats wrong with the old varnish and why do you want to take it off completely?
Just for the sake of making it into a project?

Also that table doesn't look like it has any sort of stain. Just clear varnish.

Sand out the scratches and call yourself a man. Keep them and remain a scared boy.

I was considering buying some cheap innawoods land as I have always wanted to own some land in the sticks. However I realized that building far from contractors, materials, and the necessity to provide septic, drill a well, solar etc might make the whole thing impossibly expensive.

If I attempted this I wouldn't immediately just go live in the woods obviously, but maybe work up from a cabin to a vacation spot to possibly full time living.

I'd also have to construct a dwelling without doing some stupid trailed tiny house shit. It would be an actual to code small house, but the code requirements really only need a 120 sq foot bedroom. I could possibly use timber on the land.

tl:dr

1. Is building from nothing off grid to a decent living expensive as fuck
2. What are some cheap diy methods of construction
3. General homestead discussion/ insights

1. Depends on your skills and location.
2. Depends on your skills and location i.e. availability of stuff, see Primitive Technologies
3. Homestead is not diy building, diy building is not tiny house, tiny house is not homestead, you need to sort out what the fuck do you actually want/need to do.
>>
>>1041857

Location would be the u.s northwest, skills as of now is minimum.

Basically the goal is to build a to code dwelling with water and sewer, Doing as much myself as I can manage.
>>
>>1041865
>Somewhere in the entire continent
>No skill
>No size
>Need water and toilet
>Diy but not diy

You know too little and too unspecific for us to have any meaningful discussion

If you want a house, build a house, if you want to a house off grid, build a house off grid, if you want to live in the woods off grid, then do that, what do you want?

Say i'm making a grid for a picture to draw onto a canvas. The canvas is 12x12. The picture size is unknown. In order to transfer my image by drawing/hand, i would make a 12x12 grid on the surface and on the picture digitally, would my image come out right? Not sure if this is the right board for this but its technically diy. Any tips or help is appreciated, the image is enclosed below

OK.....My porch is boring and I want to make my own planters, big and small, to use.....but I've never done any diy stuff before so I don't know anything about it, really.
Any advice? Also, creative ideas using other materials encouraged, as long as I don't have to buy a shitload of expensive stuff.
Thank you

/diy/ I'm broke and I want to pick up some used furniture from craigslist

I've done this before and gotten ridiculously good deals, like $100 desks for $15 etc

The problem is I've recently become ultra paranoid about bed bugs. I've never had bed bugs, I've never seen bed bugs, I've never gotten a piece of furniture with them, etc.

This time though, I want to buy a bed (not the mattress, just the frame). I've heard bedbugs are an absolute nightmare to deal with. So I got to thinking -- what would be the most effective way to pre treat a piece of used furniture I buy to make sure that if it had any bed bugs I'd be able to kill them?

Some preliminary research:
>diatomaceous earth slices them up if the bugs walk over it
>heat treatment (50 to 60c I think) for an extended period of time will kill them
>there are bed bug sprays, bombs and professional grade strips

Anyone know how I might go about pre treating something to make sure I kill any of these bastards if they exist?

Most of the postings I see on craigslist for bed frames are basically disassembled pick up.

Used furniture is really tempting because some of these beds cost like $200 or $300 and they are being sold for like $50

a used $300 bed would be a horrible ripoff at $50, what's wrong with you.
>>
>>1041626
why is that a horrible rip off?
>>
>>1041614
Heat is the best way to kill them.

bed frames can almost alwyas be broken down, so break it down and clean out all the knooks and crannies you can. Heat the whole thing to bed bug temperature (google heat treatment bed bug or something)

Any one put together a motorised bicycle?? If so how hard is it to do and is it worth it?

I have bought 2 of these 80cc kits. First one from eBay. The bearings in the motor were fucked. I requested a refund and they said they'd send me a new one. A month later I receive a bag of rusty bearings to repair my motor. I tried, these bearings were just as bad. Fuck.

I gave up for a year, had other projects going. I ordered another kit from an Amazon seller who had good reviews. The kit I recieved had very slight differences from the first, like different threads on the studs, different exhaust stud spacing etc. Basically, to use any old spare parts, they would require modification. Ok.

I went through and got the kit installed, even bought a pullstart. Got everything turning smoothly, then the next day bought gas and oil. Tried to start it about 50 times before I picked the bike and gave up. Turns out the head will not sit flat against the case, and the shitty tinfoil gasket does absolutely nothing. Basically, fuck these shitty fucking kits. Buy from an American builder, one that gets qc and testing. Fuck the shitty spoke attachment, on any standard wheel it will fuck the spokes. If you have any common sense, buy a street legal scooter instead.

How do I into electronics thread.
Finally got some spare time and a bunch of basic components but am finding getting started with something frustrating.
So what are some good tips for a starter like me?
If i had £100 to spend to buy a bunch of stuff what should I get.
What are good starter projects I can try that wont involve costly, part and involving basic components a beginner is likely to have?
Is there a good open source hands on approach lecture or demo series I can follow, preferably something structured.

Thanks guys

The only things you need to buy are a soldering station and solder. Everything else can be scraped or looked up/downloaded online. Unless you want to work with microcontrollers, then you can buy some cheap arduino knock-off from china on ebay for a pound each
>>
>>1041433
Oh and a voltmeter would be nice too.
>>
>>1041431
Buying random components isn't going to help you with anything.

If you want to design electronics, then pick up a text book and start reading, then download a simulator like LT spice.

If you want to follow a schematic that some one else has designed then order specifically the components in the diagram, a breadboard, some solid core wire, maybe 22 awg, a pair of needle nosed pliers and some wire strippers.

Also a power source, a cheap plastic battery holder is a start.

As for a starter project,..a LM386 based amplifier is what most people used to build in high school electronics. For 'robotics' you can look into h-bridge motor drivers or go into micro controllers like arduino for controlling servo motors.

I'm not sure how interested you guys will be in this but since it is related to DIY I thought you guys might like to hear it.

Earlier this year I was at a three day industry convention in Vegas, I'm from the UK and this was my first time there, on the first night there was a dinner show, the guy sat next to me also turned out to be a Brit and he worked for a very large paint company, jokingly I asked him why they still sold paint in cans when they were such a pain in the arse to pour paint out of, his reply floored me, he told me that there had been a plan about 15 years ago to switch to 2 litre plastic bottles, the same kind coke uses, they were just as strong, cheaper to produce and buy, and you could shake the paint instead of stirring it easily enough up to two litres, there was even a gravity + motorised painting system developed to work with a roller/brush kit, but the whole thing was dropped because it was discovered that they would sell less paint in bottles than cans because a large percentage of their trade comes from people having to buy fresh paint because the old paint has gone bad in the can, and this wouldn't happen as much with bottles!!

I've used cleaned up PET soft drink bottles to store paint and its better than cans that get all the scum around the rim where the lid fits on.

MDF swells with atmospheric humidity.
A single drop of water causes MDF to blister.
Accidentally leave MDF out in the rain and watch it turn to mush.

So, theoretically you COULD water jet cut MDF
It'll be a worthless unusable pile of soggy scrap
