Spot welder / lithium packs thread.

Recently discovered that tearing into old laptop batteries to recover cells and build packs is wayyyy more cost effecient than I thought.

True you give up some dependability. But when I came accross Grant Thompsons video on building a spot welder I decided what the hell. I can think of a million uses and at $1-$1.50 each good cells (after discarding junk ones and with varied pricing) it is becoming to hard of a deal to pass up.

I still bkame my giant lead acid pack for ruining my ebike...

So, anyone have experience building packs?

Particularly quality bms and "fuel guages" suppliers / pack building suppliers as well as used and new 18650 cells.

King of random spot welder.

Mine will be similar but not as fancy.

Probably run a foot switch for power and 2 hands use for build packs.

Anyone ever build there own packs?

Hey yo, does anyone know a good way to figure out how to drive these kinds of brushless motors? They're from floppy disk drives. The one I have has six wires coming off it, and it's chip is an LB11917.

The six wires probably are for controle the chip LB11917 (I just found the datasheet for the LB11920 -- PWM drive motor three-phase).
So these wires are for control the IC that drives the motor.

These motor can have two configuration.
Three coils and common or only three coils.
You can spin using PWM in each coil with delay between phases. It's very hard to do, because you need a closed-loop controller since it can lost the synchronization very easy in open-loop.

So I recommend you search about that LB119XX and figure out how to use it.

Hey /diy/, I'm considering becoming a carpenter

>Be me
>Love working with my hands
>doing anything mechanical, fixing things, building stuff
>Be really smart
>Parents teachers etc. always pushed me away from the trades and towards education
>Go to school for physics
>I can handle all the math and science but I hate it, it doesn't make me happy
>Leave school this semester to travel the states renovating hotels and apartments with my buddy

It was only community college so it's not like I wasted much money anyways. Do any of you carpenters have any advice for becoming one? Trade schools/apprenticeship programs/other routes? Best parts of your job/worst parts? Any reply and help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

Look on Craigslist for general labor construction jobs. When the boss sees that your a worker and smart to boot, he'll give you more challenging things to do. After a couple years of experience switch to a better paying company, or go it alone.

I work in construction, I don't really like truss day, but I hate laying tile or block.
Framing and sheathing are my favorite part. It goes relatively quickly and at the end of the day it looks like a lot of work done.

How safe is treated wood for:
>Raised-bed gardens
>Outdoor tables (eating food off plates on the tabletop)
>Outdoor furniture

I've heard everything from treated wood being safe for gardens to not even safe to stand on.

Garden's it leeches the chemicals. Okay for flowers. I suppose Okay for veggies but it will have trace amounts.

New treated stuff doesn't use arsenic any more. So you just gotta research the new chemicles used to see what else they are used in.

Tables are fine. As long as you aren't eating the tables.

Walking on is because of splinters.. But yeah.
>>
pretty sure green has arsenic in it. don't inhale when cutting
>>
>>1042641
The "new", safer, arsenic-free stuff is greener than CCA. The color comes from the higher amounts of copper in the preservative.

You could put a dollop of silicone on the back of it. You'd have to stick it to something within a couple minutes, but it will stick to just about anything and dry in ~20 minutes and become very difficult to remove. There is also a quickset silicone that comes in little tubes, it is insanely strong and dries in seconds.

Any you you DIYnos who good at electronics?
I do not mean; "I have just made a guitar pedal kit / replaced a cap in my charger".

I talking, designing circuits, based on home made designs and calculus!

If yes, then which project are you most proud of?
Which skill within electronic would you like to be better at?
Your background and reason to enter electronic?

I'm most proud of my thesis project, a 100W Bidirectional DC/DC converter operating at high frequencies.

I would like to be better at regulation loops and feedback.

I have had electronics as a hobby since I was little, now I have a degree in EE, and just got my first job in a cool company.

I've designed a few amplifiers, effect pedals, and power supplies, semi-"from scratch," but I sure as hell don't use any calculus. The only math I do is some simple back-of-the-envelope stuff before i throw something into SPICE. Learning how to do real EE math would probably help me put together higher order filters much faster than the roundabout trial-and-error method I tend to use, though. I took calc through differential equations in school but that was a while ago and I'm not really sure how to apply it to circuits.

It's very hard these days to come up with an "original" design in the realm of audio amps and effects, so most of the shit i've tried is usually over-convoluted and doesn't end up working as I imagined. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to get a PLL working with a guitar as input for some synth-y sounding and frequency shifting stuff.

I would say, calculus on the back of an envelope can bring you pretty far in a project.
But for amplifiers, both linear and switching, I would do a bit more calculus, just to ensure losses and gains are correct. But most importantly, the stability when feedback is applied. Here I'm falling a bit short on experience, though.

Was it just linear power supplies?
I have done a few switching supplies already, some more well designed than others..

I'm actually going to study the PLL my self. Need it at my job and for a spare time project with my old supervisor. They are pretty cool.

I would say it is easy to come up with new designs, but not new topologies.

What are the power ratings of your amplifiers?

Why do Philips head screws even exist when the Torx Aryan master race screw is commonly available?
104 posts and 26 images submitted.
>>
2/3 of philips screwdrivers fit 2/3 philips screws if you dont give a fuck - most people don't.
1 size torx screwdriver fits 2 sizes of torx screws if you wiggle it, 3 if you have a hammer.
Torx drivers cost more and you need a lot more of them.
Majority will go with the cheaper option.
I have full sets of each and only get annoyed when im handed the aftermath of someone trying to remove a torx with a philips.

I don't, but I'm sure somebody will like what you have made. Post some pictures on a Harry Potter forum, try Etsy too. You mkight be able to sell some for a bit of cash.

I would probably sand them down a little more to make them a tad smoother, make them a little less rustic. But, I can see why you would leave them like that, it does fit a wands 'style'.

I like the hollowed out parts of the wands. How did you do them?

damn nigga just look on craigslist
anything that gets hot will work
$800 is way too much i found a kiln for $100 and melted shit in it

The jacket I wanted to use as a motorcycle rain jacket has arrived.

A quality good, and seemingly ideal, other than the hood. I could send it back, but I'd like to first see if I can manage something with the hood first, since I like the jacket.

Tried wearing it under the helmet - makes it quite hot quickly, and restricts my ability to hear & turn my head fully.

Tried wearing it tucked inside the jacket, but this was actually difficult to do, and didn't seem like it would stay.

I suppose a temporary option is best - I'm sure if something works on a hoody, etc, it would probably work here.

http://shop.grundens.com/shop/jackets/neptune-103-anorak-jacket/

Anybody have suggestions on how I can get the hood to stay either rolled down, tucked away, etc ?

Can you just safety pin it to the back? Like 3 pins would do.. But this would poke holes in the whole thing.
>>
>>1044371
I suppose that's possible, was really hoping for something that would not damage it. Or If I AM goiing to damage it, being able to easily undo and redo it would be ideal, on the off chance I decide it's in my benefit to wear a hood. (Like perhaps a button on the back of the hood and the back of the jacket. )

>>1044374
Tape it down when you fold it inside, maybe that'll work.

Hey /diy/, I was wondering if something like this could be easily used in a automotive application. Do I need to worry about voltage regulation or is that kind of thing built into the LED board? This is my first time /diy/ing with LEDs so I don't have a lot of experience.
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1044297
it can be alright. see how much current it draws at 14.5V (the voltage supplied by the alternator when it's running). if you can keep it cool at that level you should be ok.
>>
>>1044297
>automotive application

Looks like it is designed for 12 Volt use. Previous post mentioned checking it at 14.5 V, but odds are it will be OK.

The lighting pattern will dictate its use. This will probably be OK for a dome light or other interior use. Probably not designed for external lighting.
>>
LEDs need a resistor to limit the current. This one has one built in and will work straight off of your automotive supply.
>>1044308
I'm not sure where you get 14.5 from, most cars are different and for almost any situation that difference is irrelevant.
