I sat down with a friend lately talking about my frustrations and issues down the line in my life. After a fair bit of talk he told me what he thinks is my problem: I talk too formally and that makes people think I always have my guard up.
This is actually true as, throughout my time growing up, I was bullied. The one time I built too much confidence during my teen years where, granted, I acted like a twat, a lot of my former friends turned on me and began to bully me. That said I didn't act like a bastard to them or to many, I just acted stuck up my own ass. During this time I also said stuff which I thought was in confidence and then, high school being high school, it would spread like wild fire and turned a whole year of high school into hell.
Now I tend to be very much on guard as I go through periods of anxiety where I become paranoid about giving off the wrong impression or slipping up and saying something bad or inappropriate and having that come back to mulch me. But since I am in my mid twenties now and trying to build up a proper career, I find myself needing to address this. My friend who has known me and I him since a child was the one who said I should look to it.
For further background since I was young, video games has been my main form of entertainment but developed too into a means of escapism. Same with browsing here and chatting to people online versus in person.
What should I do and how should I do it?

How do I deal with a shitty slacker colleague?
I work for an IT company with good reputation. We have big, well known customers and talented and ambitious colleagues who are leading in their field.
And then there's my colleague...
Whenever I pass by he seems to be watching Youtube or browsing the web while yawning.
Tasks that should take one or two days takes him weeks. And then he delivers something shitty.
He doesn't keep up with tech and doesn't read programming books. He seems to lack the passion and interest for what we are doing.
He seems to get annoyed whenever he has to take his headphones off to discuss things. Tech discussions with him are meaningless anyway since he doesn't know much about the project we are working on, ever after working with it for 6+ months. He doesn't seem to know much about the technologies we use either. I don't know how he has spent his 5+ years in the tech industry.
He's "sick" pretty much every second Monday and gets a cold for a week every second month or so.
It's sad that he got hired but I guess it's because he gave the impression of being super cool and passionate at first.
Now he just seems like a manipulative psychopath who tries to save face by blurting out bullshit during meetings.
Always something to blame. Some other person, environments, technical debt and so on.
I'm sure he has tried to put the blame on me at some point as well.
I get the feeling that management is a bit tired of him.
They have assigned a summer project with him as the only programmer with a tight deadline.
With his current delivery rate it will take years instead of weeks... so, that's going to be interesting.
We are "friends" at work and eat lunch together but I can't stand him anymore due to his work performance.
I don't want to work with him ever again. I still deliver and try to stay motivated but I enjoy work a lot more when I work with motivated and inspiring people.
What would you do?

I work with him daily right, and have done so for months.

Hello, /adv/, I've searched the internet and everyone for advice but I'm still not sure what I should do.
I'm going to be a sophomore in college next semester (august). I think I want to be a teacher. The way it works is that you major in your desired subject area (math, science, etc) and education at the same time. I don't really care what I teach, I'm cool with anything.
Looking at what I've seen it goes like this:

>Music, Art
No jobs
>English
Some say its OK, some say its just as bad as history
>Science, Math
Most jobs
>Special ED
Where the money is at
I was thinking about going into math, but the thing is I am very bad at it. I'm sure I can teach it but the only problem is getting a degree in it. I'm scheduled to take pre-calc this coming semester so I feel like im getting a very very late start since this degree requires so much.
So I'm also thinking of biology or maybe chemistry. They aren't exactly easy either but not as bad as math, atleast not bio.
So here I have a few questions.... open to anyone who can help me. I really need to find a direction and stick with it so I don't waste any time or money.

I dunt get paid anything more than any other teacher of similar experience and education in the same district. There are no jobs in English, history, or electives because those are the easy subjects and every idiot thinks they can do them. I'm not a teacher, but I have like 5 friends who became teachers.
Look into your university and enroll in the teaching program. As far as majors go, I believe two of my friends did English major, one did biology, and one did history. They all have jobs in their local elementary schools. Also, I might be wrong about this, but I think it works like this. If you have a general education degree, you can teach grades k-8. Grades 9-12 require a degree in English or biology. Also most of my friends did a 5 year program, it was like the extra year was a graduate program.
I guess its ok to major in anything you relatively like, but I would refrain from music and art. Most schools have the single music teacher that works there for 40 years type. At least there are lots of say math teachers in high school, like honors calc, pre calc, geometry, etc.

Med-student here, Psychiatry final tomorrow. It it isn't an important subject and doesn't change much, but for some reason I ironically feel extremely anxious like never before. I drank a shitload to calm myself down, jerked off twice and called my girlriend, nothing helped. I can barely write (took maybe 10 minutes to write this post properly). I should probably still be studying but just can't do it.
Any advice on how to handle the anxiety non-pharmacologically?

But, I think for many people it's very difficult to just stop carrying about your anxiety, especially when you enter a (slight) panic attack. So not really sure that's good for me.

Seems like people find it weird I am 26 and never had a girlfriend. Honestly, what is so shocking? I tried and failed many times.
I just don't have what women want. I lack necessary dating capital too. Like a car, experience with dating, large pools of friends.
