The US national park system represents some of the most valuable undeveloped real estate in the entire world. According to studies, simply selling Yosemite and nearby Sequoia national parks to developers could lead to a "$1.5 trillion bonanza" as real estate moguls from LA, the Bay Area, and around the world bid against each other to buy those properties from the federal government.

Imagine wiping out 8% of the entire national debt simply by selling a couple of parks. Now imagine all the money that could come from the sale of other federal parks like Yellowstone, Acadia, Crater Lake, Great Smoky Mountains, Grand Canyon, Zion, Denali, Olympic, Shenandoah, etc.

Assuming that private ownership won't cut down significantly on the ability enjoy nature, is it time to unleash this economic engine and cut our debt at the same time, /out/?

and why would you assume that?

Assume that there's a clause in the act passed to allow selling off the parks that orders private buyers to maintain public access to those lands.

So /out/, I've been attempting to fish in the lower tributaries of the Chesapeake bay, (James and York river), for the better part of three years now and can't seem to catch anything other than Croaker and Spot. I've been using basic bottom or high low rigs whilst drift fishing, usually baited with squid strips on circle hooks around size 1/0 to 4, I've also used bucktails, soft lures, live eels, and menhaden all to no success.

I'm generally using a 15ft skiff so I prefer to stay in the rivers since running out to the CBBT can get hairy if you couldn't make it back to Lynnhaven and the weather turned south. In terms of locations during Striped bass season I'll troll the bridges (64,664,JRB,Coleman) and during the summer I try to fish around the steeper channel shelves and creek inlets going for flounder, or anything else that's good eating.

What exactly am I doing wrong? I'm assuming the tides have a general effect on the feeding habits of fish, but due to time constraints I usually don't have the luxury of going out at a specific point of the cycle.

I went to pictured rocks in upper Michigan. First time backpacking, did 3 nights and 4 days. What the fuck do you do once you hit camp? We might not have planned the miles well, did 7 miles a day, but we had 8 hours and weren't sure what to do with ourselves. Didnt want to explore because we were afraid of being too tired the next day. Ended up swimming, reading, and listening to Dune
What do you do?

Backpacking 7 miles is something I'd only do on an extremely taxing, mountainous day. If you're on flat ground (I'm assuming it was flat because midwest) you should plan on 10-15 miles a day, easily. It was probably a good idea to be conservative for your first backpacking trip, however.

Basically I just chill and read. After hiking all day you'll usually be so tired you'll pass out almost immediately after it gets dark.

It was cliffy the 3rd day, 7 miles felt plenty. We ended up reaching camp at 3 every day. First 2 days were definitely very light, but my father is 50+ and out of shape. It's no mountain, but it's pretty up and down

Hey /out/, so I have a master plan of getting a used truck and converting a cargo trailer into a small home and moving out of this desert and into the lush greenery of Oregon.

There I would live mostly off of nature, but still hopefully close enough to a town that I can get supplies when needed.

The national forests and BLM east and north-west of Portland are where I had my sights on. I am well aware of the rules of staying in one spot no more that 2 weeks at a time then having to move 25 miles away to a new spot, UNLESS i am well hidden or far off the beaten path where any rangers would be.

I'm wondering if anyone has done this or knows of anyone who has, can reply with tips or wisdom. Also, suggestions on where to go and places to avoid would be much appreciated!

Is gold panning something we can talk about on /out/?

I'm heading to an area where there was some gold mining done in historical times and there is supposed to be some placer gold in the rivers.

so I figured I'll give it a try. I looked around a bit on youtube, and there is dozens of vids about it. So I watched a few and went back to my old textbooks (I'm a geologist, but totally different field) and I think I'll manage, but I'd love to hear /out/s recomendations.

Any stories or stuff like this?

Oh, and I am well aware of the chances - or rather lack thereof - of finding a huge nugget and getting rich and such. I just want to try it for fun. If I find something worth my while, that'd be great, but I'm not counting on it.

>I'm a geologist
sure you are, buddy.
at no point in all your studies did anyone mention specific gravity or gravity separation.

I'm an actual geologist and I know how to pan gold. It's a requirement if you're going to engage in statistical sampling to locate a gold source (outcropping).

I have no stories, the method is simple and easy to learn. I've panned pounds of gold in my life. There are some secrets about where to sample, but simple knowledge of gravity, alluvial sorting, and false and real bedrock is all you need. Stuff any real geologist would know.
>>
I grew up in a former gold mining town and tried it a couple of times, didn't find a heck of a lot bit did end up with lots of tiny rubies, zircons and stuff so they're fairly interesting.
Best bets around streams for alluvial gold is where the water slows down, before it goes into a wider section or pool, in between boulders and inside bends of rivers
>>
>>1076527
>sure you are, buddy.
I indeed am, and of course I know
>specific gravity or gravity separation.
That's the whole thing why gold panning works (and will most likely result in black sands for me…). But I mostly went for hydrogeology, so gold is not something I am too familiar with, so I'm trying to catch up a bit on a hobbyist level.

> locate a gold source (outcropping).
I know the outcrops from the literature about the area and I know which creeks could contain some, but I'm not going to start to dig a handmade mine into a hillside that has been deemed uneconomical.

A teenager who went for a swim at a Melbourne beach and emerged with his feet covered in blood has stumped marine experts.

Sam Kanizay's legs felt sore after playing a game of football on Saturday, so he decided to soak them at the beach. About 30 minutes later, the 16-year-old walked out of the water with his feet and ankles covered in what looked like hundreds of little pin holes that were bleeding profusely. Upon returning home, his parents promptly took him to the hospital.

Kanizay's father, Jarrod, said hospital staff had no idea what kind of creature could have caused the injuries. So Jarrod went back to the beach the following night with a pool net full of meat and captured the animals he believes could have been responsible. He took a video of dozens of the tiny bug-like creatures chomping on the chunks of meat.

Jeff Weir, executive director of the Dolphin Research Institute, believes the teen may have been attacked by crustaceans called amphipods, which usually eat decomposing plant and animal scraps.

Who here uses one? I've been thinking about trying one out. Mostly to save weight. My Yeti down bag (Nice and comfy, but too heavy >2.5 lbs).
Been looking at different ones: Cumulus, As Tucas & GramXpert. However, I am very intrigued by the cheapo Aegismax quilts on AliExpress. Anyone here tried one?

No bushsurvivalmemeing in this thread please. I'm not interested in a wool blanket. This is strictly for lightweight backpacking

Own the Aegismax quilt.
The fabric is quite thin however it is breathable unlike the aegismax sleeping bags.

I use mine for warmer and more consistent weather. It does the job well just dont go pushing it.

That actually seems like a pretty neat little challenge, might be interested in doing it. How difficult are the hikes? Only hike I've done this season is a hike to the top of Vernal Falls in Yosemite and that one kicked my ass pretty good. Are there a lot of steep vertical sections?

He pretty much did everything right. You don't want to try to scare a mommy grizzly, you don't want to turn your back, you do want to talk calmly and walk slowly. The only thing I would have done differently is that I would have gotten off the trail, the bears probably use it frequently and had no reason to make way for a human.

>>
>>1060602
No big spoopy, but once while onnatrail I saw a big wolf about 30 m out, it looked at me and smiled. First I registered that it is a dog, felt a strong threat, maybe it will eventually attack although clearly had a doge smile. It lasted a few seconds (so it felt), and I reached for my knife in a small panic just in case. When looking back up, the wolf was gone.

I was puzzled, but it turned out it was a tree trunk which looked doggish from a far. The weird part was it lasted so long, really spooked me.

Dunno if injuns have stories of meeting illusionary wolves in forests, guessing it is common to daydream off after walking a monotonous trail.
