I went to pictured rocks in upper Michigan. First time backpacking, did 3 nights and 4 days. What the fuck do you do once you hit camp? We might not have planned the miles well, did 7 miles a day, but we had 8 hours and weren't sure what to do with ourselves. Didnt want to explore because we were afraid of being too tired the next day. Ended up swimming, reading, and listening to Dune
What do you do?

start hiking at 8-9am and stop hiking at around 4-5. Eat, shoot the shit, and then fall asleep.

Backpacking 7 miles is something I'd only do on an extremely taxing, mountainous day. If you're on flat ground (I'm assuming it was flat because midwest) you should plan on 10-15 miles a day, easily. It was probably a good idea to be conservative for your first backpacking trip, however.

Basically I just chill and read. After hiking all day you'll usually be so tired you'll pass out almost immediately after it gets dark.

It was cliffy the 3rd day, 7 miles felt plenty. We ended up reaching camp at 3 every day. First 2 days were definitely very light, but my father is 50+ and out of shape. It's no mountain, but it's pretty up and down

Munising to chapel is beautiful, can do easily in 3 days. After that, it's flat. But, you're never more than 300 yards from the lake and mostly you're about 100 yards away. Beach access almost the whole way. Coves was a really cool site but we didnt stay. There were toilets at every site, but only fire pits at a few

Make sure you stop in the Marquette area!
Hogsback Mountain and Dead River Falls are two excellent excursions for killing a few hours!

Bugs have pretty much died out for the season. I'm 30 minutes away from PR and I've had no issues for the past few weeks.
