Keep walking I guess. Try not to shit your panties because that might simultaneously anger and arouse them.

He pretty much did everything right. You don't want to try to scare a mommy grizzly, you don't want to turn your back, you do want to talk calmly and walk slowly. The only thing I would have done differently is that I would have gotten off the trail, the bears probably use it frequently and had no reason to make way for a human.

Fun fact, thats a Katmai near the water falls.
When I was 12, my parents took me and my brother there for holidays. on our way from the falls a huge male bear the size of a Volkswagen crossed the trail around 10m in front of us. he took at look at us, did a sniff and then he vanished in the thicks.

>wat do?
Absolutely nothing, but your heart rate increases to around 180bpm and I spontaneously peed myself.
>>
>>1075202
>Katmai
Brooks falls in Katmai to be exact, thats where all the Bear go fishing.
They are all well fed there, so that takes the edge off. Still 1200 lbs of fur and claws walking at you triggers your instinct.

More than whipping out my iphone so I can show all my boomer facebook friends like video man. Fuck off to /an/ with this bullshit, she was way too close and you know it, or would if you had ever dealt with bears. You want to gamble on it and have the Alaskan Troopers find your rotting half eaten body covered in blowflies cached under the bush on some river bar, that's your business.
>>
>>1075583
nah, just spray them if they come way too close no biggie. shooting an animal that doesn't want to attack you just in case it might is literally retarded a sure sign of mental illness.
>>
>>1075604
Sow griz with cubs is the most unpredictable and temperamental animal in North America. You can gamble on it, I won't. If self preservation makes me mentally -ill in your eyes because you've embraced this pervasive
death cult ideology, so be it I don't give a damn.
>>
>>1075620
seems to me shooting it is a gamble with worse odds. i agree on the temper i agree you have to be prepared to defend yourself statistically tho your chances of injury or death increases by taking a shot. so its utterly illogical to do it seems like a vad panic reaction by a histeric cunt. but if you do that all level headed its way worse.

> Katmai
> National Park
There's your problem. In National Parks you can't hunt the animals, so they are not afraid of you. I spent a week in Yosemite national Park hiking from White Wolf to Tuolumne Meadows, and we were visited by human-acclimated bears every night. These were just regular black bears, but they are well fed and get huge. We were even tailed by a juvenile bear while hiking on the trail, the little guy followed like a puppy waiting for a hand out. That was in 1976. I will never, ever go backpacking in a National Park again. I avoid those places like the plague. Pic related.

The way to avoid these encounters is to stay the fuck out of US National Parks. In my area (south-central Idaho, USA) we have plenty of BLM, National Forest, etc. lands. This is where hunting bears is allowed. Every time I have seen a bear here, the thing runs off as soon as it sees me.

And somewhere I read that you have less chance of being attacked if you have bear-strength pepper spray versus a gun. Unless you have a shotgun filled with slugs, or something like a Ruger Alaskan chambered in 454 Casull, and you're calm while being charged by an animal the size of a Volkswagen at 35 MPH, it's better to have a bell on your pack and a big can of pepper spray. Avoid the encounter to begin with by making a lot of noise.
>>
>>1075944
Guides in Alaska usually carry a .375H&H or a 45-70 rifle. Its honestly just dumb to go into remote areas without real protection. All the bear spray in the world isnt going to stop a predatory bear from chewing on you. A general rule of thumb in Alaska is if a bear can see and hear you, and STILL comes within 20 yards, it is a threat and should be shot. I was amazed at how unafraid the bears in Kodiak were of just standing and yelling... They do however run for the hills when they hear a warning shot
>>
Fact: Bears are pussies and wont risk getting killed by a human who looks bigger than them
>>
>>1075944
>>1075944
Katmai has the most relaxed bears of all Alaska, they are so well feed from the salmon and so used to humans that they virtually ignore them. It is a special case, but in Katmai it is likely safer to ignore a bear and keep your distance than to stand your ground. I remember the rangers instructed us vastly different on bears than they did in any other place in Alaska.
>>
>>1075909
What a tired bear!
>>
>>1075891
More dangerous than A grizzly, yes.
Sow griz with cubs becomes more dangerous than even the bull moose
>>
>>1075673
We'll see, going to the Alaska Range for two weeks next month. Bringing the .45-70 lever and the .44 pistol. Bears are going to be aggressive bulking for hibernation. Either way, look for me on the news you faggot.

They don't feed the bears in Yellowstone any more so they aren't a problem. I backpacked in Yellowstone for a total of probably 2 months in my life and have only seen 2 bears in the backcountry and both completely ignored me.
>>
>>1075559
You don't need giant rounds like that unless you plan to hunt and kill the bear. I've never seen a video or heard a story of a guy who fired a 9mm or .45 at a bear and it continued it's charge. They are terrified by the extremely loud noise and the (at minimum) extremely painful feeling of a bullet entering their body.

What I have heard is stories of guys spraying a bear directly in the face with bear mace and the bear running right through it and killing or mauling them.
>>
>>1076326
You sure you aren't thinking of Black bears (giant pussies) or are you confusing fudd logic with real life? These monsters shrug off .30-06 like they didn't even feel it shatter their shoulder
>>

>These monsters shrug off .30-06 like they didn't even feel it shatter their shoulder
What are hot loads.
What is 10mm
what is a punt gun.
What is 45-75 gov.
Its easy to kill shit with guns if you got a elephant gun.
And a reloading bench for those hot sticky loads.
>>
>>1076331
I've seen multiple videos of aggressive bears stopping a full charge and turning tail with a basic warning shot

Not to mention a well placed 9mm can literally kill a bear full stop.
>>
>>1076331
Also, please provide proof a .30-06 is not gonna hammer any bear if you can shoot a dinner plate at 100 yards
>>
>>1076341
Read any book about Sourdoughs. Particularly 'Last of the Great Brown Bear Men" and Alaska's Wolf Man'. Frequently the front shoulder is shattered and the organs are not hit. You have to hit the major organs to kill mega-fauna like this. Go try your purse gun on Ol Ephraim.

>>
>>1076383
If you don't have shot placement (you won't in this situation), a really big bullet is the next best thing.
Going on a bear hunt or getting really lucky is a much different story. 12 GA with slugs is the best solution to this problem.

Lighten up Francis. There's not much choice where 4 people can stand with the bear positioned diagonally like that. In any case, Grizzlies are big, nothing crazy about that one.

Its about as easy to stay calm when you need to use a gun or see a bear as it is when a car accident happens in front of you.

Easier actually, the one time i had an accident happen in front of me a truck flipped and I saw a girl get ejected and i couldnt do a thing except fumble for 911 and then forgot where exactly I was. A buddy I was with kept a much cooler head and rendered assistance since he was an emt.

Because Katmai is a special case, likely the nicest Grizzlies ever. Do to the special food situation (salmon buffet all day), the proximity to dozens of other bears and decades of exposure to tourists changed their behavior. They didn't became tame, but lets say they are laid back. Thats why the guy in OP can walk close to mother and cubs and not get torn to shreds.
