What's your opinion on them? Do they actually encourage cycling? Which city has the best/worst?

Its my opinion that the money spent on bike paths would be better spent on widening roads and adding shoulders. for one bike paths always seem to not go anywhere useful. Second its safer for both bikes and cars to widen the roads because it make drivers more aware of cyclists and gives them room to pass. Third its always a good thing for any city to have the option of widening roads in the future and with a 3 ft easement on either side without shoulders it is only possible to expand roads 1 lane at a time.

Our local transportation department has quarterly meetings for people to suggests changes and these meeting are dominated by Fred's and cycling clubs. I think I'm going to attend the next one.

I think another issue that is proliferation the over use of cycle paths in my area is an ordinance that says new structures can choose to add a cycling path instead of a sidwalk, and cycling paths are much cheap and not really required to be maintained.

There is a creek that runs diagonally through town here and a multi-use path that follows it. For the most part whenever a road crosses the creek the path goes under that bridge. So we have a 14 km stretch where you only cross busy roads twice.

Ones that just follow roads seem pointless. And they make intersections dangerous when going against traffic since you can't see left turning vehicles coming up from behind and those drivers rarely check for riders on the path. Its a shit design every bit as bad as sidewalk salmoning.
>>
Bike paths are definitely much safer than wide shoulders. And they encourage people to take up cycling even if they're not that good as they can safely stay in bike paths without cars constantly going past them. My city has awesome bike path/MUP network and there are tons of cyclists from all age groups between 5 and 100 daily on the paths, even through the winter. Building grade separated crossings over any major road improves the safety of bike paths even more compared to wide shoulders.

A well designed bike path network doesn't just follow the roads. It's often possible to not have the bike paths strictly attached to roads but going through some other route while still reaching the same places as roads.

That's just WAY more expensive and in many places impossible.

The Dupont Circle Trolley Station was opened in 1949; it closed in 1962 when the streetcar network shuttered.

In 1995, the station was converted into a food court called “Dupont Down Under”, but it failed.

Currently, it is used as an art space. You can take a visit for $15.

ITT we discuss the objective superiority of steel bicycles

Objective superiority mean steel is superior in every way, which is not. Yes steel is cheap, yes they make strong frames with it, yes it's relatively comfy, then yes a steel bike is superior if you only want to commute. For everything else aluminum and garbon frames are better.
>>
>>1072586
>Objective superiority mean steel is superior in every way, which is not.
No, it means that the ways in which it is superior objectively outweigh the ways in which it is not.

>Touring, bikepacking and adventuring with 40kg of stuff.
Since when it is ? Last time I did it weighted less than 3kg, so nope you can do it with a road bike as long as it's not a paper-like frame.

>No, it means that the ways in which it is superior objectively outweigh the ways in which it is not.

No, it objectively doesn't and even less subjectively, at least for me. If you have fun with you steel bike then good for you.

I've gone back and forth for getting around, I like sneakers and sticky pedals now. They are fine, you aren't missing anything incredible.

Nerd shoes are fun because you can really throw the hammer down on a light bike. The are annoying everywhere off the bike though. Clop clop clop.
>>
No, most people don't for commuting or for casual riding. Mostly only for road cycling (as in the people who ride high end road bikes dressed in full kit; I'm not talking about just riding on a road) and sometimes mountain biking.
I have 5 bikes and currently only one has clipless pedals, though I'll be putting clipless on another one soon.

I bought the B17 narrow saddle almost a month ago. I'm thinking of returning it and asking for my money back.

I previously used the stock Masi saddle that came with my Masi Giramondo and it was perfect. I ride a fuck ton of KM with it, though, since I use my bike for everything and it started to rip and look terrible.

Since every cyclist I know reccommended me to use a Brooks saddle I fell for the meme and bought one.

So far:

>it's uncomfortable as fuck
>my balls are constantly touching the front rivet, so that I have to be moving my ass around all the time
>it's impossible to set it level, since when I turn the screws on the seat clamp it automatically shifts up (due to my bike size, I need to use it as far up front as possible)
>I can always feel the front rivet and the metallic parts on the back
>I never had issues with chaffing before and I'm having it now
>that "hammock" effect makes me feel like I'm sinking on the saddle
>it messed up with my bike fit and now I can't find my perfect seat height again (I didn't move the seat tube at first, but it seems like it's higher than my other saddle)

Did I fall for the Brooks meme or does it get better? I've cycled 300km on it so far and I've used the proofide and it's all shit. I wanted to buy another stock Masi saddle but I don't find them for sale anywhere.

Should I return it?
Should I suck trap cocks?

I mean, Brooks makes lots of different saddles. You can still fall for the meme and find one that is comfortable and supports your sit bones. If you're having so much discomfort, you definitely need to find a different saddle, whether it's hipster Brooks shit or not.
>>
Most people position Brooks saddles completely wrong and I was one of them for a long time. When its setup correctly most of your weight should be on your sit bones with little pressure forward of them. Everything you mention is an indication that it isn't positioned correctly. Your sit bones need to be right at the back of the saddle without resting on the rear rail, your balls should be no where near the front rivet.

If you are too far forward you are supported by your taint area which causes chaffing and numbness. So the saddle probably needs to go forward a lot, like 2-3 cm. Moving it that far forward will mean you are sitting on a higher part of the saddle, so you will need to lower your post to compensate.

One nice thing about Brooks saddles is that they are really slick and they tell you when they aren't in the right position by making you sink in the middle, or slide off the back. You aren't sinking because the saddle is low in the middle or the nose is too far down, its because the pedaling motion is pulling you to where your legs want the saddle to be. The rails are very short on Brooks saddles so it may not even be possible to get it in the right position with the seatpost you have. For one of my bikes I had to swap a seatback post for a straight one.

For a Brooks saddle in the correct position you want it level, no need to angle it upward. Getting it level is a pain in the ass unless you have a 2 bolt style seatpost for fine adjustments.

Also go easy on the proofide otherwise the leather can prematurely stretch out, requiring the saddle to be laced.

>my balls are constantly touching the front rivet, so that I have to be moving my ass around all the time
Sounds like you're sliding forward, which means that the saddle is positioned wrong. The nose should be tilted slightly up so that the place where you sit is level with the ground. Pic related.
>I never had issues with chaffing before and I'm having it now
Yeah that's because Brooks has sharp chamfering. The solution is to lace the saddle.

But yeah Brooks is memeshit and the only real reason to get one is for aesthetics. I think that Fizik and Terry make far better saddles.
