I keep trying. I feel better for a few days, burying my head in the sand and deluding myself into thinking I have a future of some kind. Its amazing how quickly the mood can change when the immediate feelings of worthlessness and no hope are removed. I even meditated the past few days and felt a lot better inside. But you can't hide for long. It comes back stronger. Bottom line - No Future. Just fucking trapped. Don't want to be NEET, don't want to be a fucking wageslave. Want independence so fucking badly, don't want to leave the house. Its catch 22 all the way

Most of the squares I missed in my normal riding have no roads leading into them, so I have to check out the area on google earth and see if there is some way into it via driveway or path leading to grain silo etc. A few have no way in at all. And the way squares are detected, they sometimes get skipped if the road is straight, of which there are many around here.

Largest square with every inner square filled is 14 x 14, roughly 196 square miles.

My generic $150 Amazon folding bike. The gear ratio seems too low for road use. Even in 6th gear I spin like nuts on the flats and don't seem to go fast enough. They probably put normal size gears on a 20 incher. Oh well. Should I rebuild it with BMX wheels/hubs as a SS freewheel or coaster brake bike? Does anyone enjoy their folding bikes? It's not too bad for commuting or basic off-roading though. I might put some Kenda Kwest or other colored BMX tires on it to make a more fun looking bike. The low gear ratio really bugs me though, which is why I don't ride it that much.

i was thinking of aquiring one as a second bike incase my beater gets a flat or someone goes to my house and we need to move around.

>i find them cute, is it worth it?
I have one, they are good for low distances, 4-10km (20km loop), mine has pretty beefy 20'' wheels. The bad thing about the bike is the weight, weights more than my road bike, and the seatpost is kinda short, so it hurts my knees a bit on big hills. Overall is a pretty nice BSO., I have used it a lot, and carried plenty of times 25kg-30kg loads on it without problems except some rubbing with my shoes.
>>
>>1069651
You have the $150 amazon one?

I've been thinking of getting a Brompton or a Tern or some such thing, is it not really worth the extra? What does the extra cost get you?

Would I look like a loser if I wore a cap under a helmet without the rest of the kit? I don't have a jersey or shorts yet I just want to be a

My commute is like a mile on the bike, so I just wear normal clothes but sometimes with a cap under my helmet if its really sunny or rainy or I just want to.
>>
A cap under a helmet is barely noticeable.
You'll still look like a loser regardless of what you wear or do so don't worry about it
>>
Hijacking your thread. How do you real cyclists feel about cyclists who don't wear "full kit"? Down here in the south, "full kit" riders are also known as spandex queers. When I'm riding, I don a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. Obviously aero-dynamics come into play, but to me it doesn't seem worth it.

Axle is m9, dropout gap is for a m10, is this a super bad idea? This is the first bike I've built up a track bike, got a Mavic Ellispe track wheelset and both wheels came with m9 axles, front fits a dream

the play might cause the wheel to wiggle and pull out of position and rub against the chainstay, considering the torque applied on the drive side in fixed gear drivetrain..

I've never tried to be sure, try it and report back

it will be fine, ive run pegs on a bmx bike using 3/8ths axle in 14mm dropouts

Soo, after riding your bike for a long time, did you notice a stronger upper body? Or is true when they say it does almost nothing above the waistline (if you're already not fat)?

>Or is true when they say it does almost nothing above the waistline

Absolutely. In fact if you are fat like I was when I started, you may actually lose muscle. I don't really care that I look like a skeleton with massive thighs though. However, after my first crash in a long time (tried to do a wheelie on a folding bike and went sideways), my shoulder and upper arm were sprained and my mom commented that my lack of muscle tone may be making me more prone to such injuries. I'm not sure if she's correct or not.
>>
>>1072973
Once I started riding for a while I could see my ribcage. I'm skinny, but generally all the areas around my abdomen feel harder. My forearms only look more muscular because the fat burned off.

I used to take my dog running alongside my bike, it was pretty nice. It was just a cheap bike I got at walmart though and the handlebars weren't that stable.

I'd like to get another bike but I have two issues:
1. I am not certain how much money I should drop on a bike that I won't use all that much--just for short rides for enjoyment/exercise, not transportation anywhere.

2. I need to take two dogs with me now. Previously I only took one dog and just held her leash in my hand. I was curious about if anyone bikes with two and if it is worth trying one of those "springer" contraptions on both sides of the bike.

How far could steam engines go in a day?

How far can diesel locomotives go in a day?
15 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1069974
Depends on how many tenders you attach to the steam locomotive. Theoretically, you could attach a hundred tenders filled with water and fuel and go any place you wanted without stopping.
>>
>>1069986

Assuming we're talking about a steam locomotive, how would you get coal from the read tenders up to the locomotive without stopping?
>>
>>1069987
Well, it would have to be oil to make it easier. Coal is delivered mechanically on some locomotives using an Archimedes screw, though.

Since there's a thread about what major US city has the worst public transit, how about we discuss minor US cities with surprisingly decent public transit?

Providence (capital of Rhode Island, pop. ~180,000) has a network that pushes well above its size within the city by American standards, IMHO. While weekend service is indeed pretty weak (few routes run more often than twice per hour on weekends), you'd be hard pressed to find any part of the city more than a few blocks away from a bus that runs at least every 20 minutes.

Didn't you guys try planning a light rail line that failed spectacularly? If I'm not mistaken the same route will be turned into brt-superlite (essentially nicer bus shelters).

Yes, it is. And in the greatest country on God's green Earth, we actually run some fuckin' trains. 10,000 ft. double stacked pigs, 23,000 ton coal trains, and mile long grain trains. You euro pricks struggle to run 60 car unit ore trains and let your roads end up clogged with unnecessary trucks.

/bqg/ - Bike Questions General

I'll start with a question of my own: What fenders should I put on my OTS? I want something high quality, something that will stay where I put it and not constantly need adjustment to avoid rubbing, and something that will look nice on a blue steel 1980s road bike (so maybe silver metal?). Prefer not to spend too much over $100, but I'll go a bit over if it will get me something really good. I ride this bike a lot, these will see up to a few thousand km per month, so high quality is a must.
350 posts and 38 images submitted.
>>
OP here, looking at Portland Design Works fenders and Planet Bike Cascadia fenders. Thoughts on either of these? Running 27x1-1/8, I assume fenders designed for 700c will work.
>>
When you're coming to a stop is it alright to switch the front gears down to make it easier to start up again without changing the rear gears all the way too? I know this means the chain will be going diagonally which isn't good for the bike, but if you immediately shift back up again once you get going will it be a problem?
>>
>>1071660
It's always best to avoid cross chaining. If you are in your big ring and one of your smaller cogs, you could shift towards one of your middle cogs. If you're in your big ring and middle cog, you could stay in the middle cog and switch to the small ring. Etc. If you do cross chain it's just going to wear out your components a bit faster, obviously less so if you're not doing it for as long, but I don't see why you would have to be in big ring/big cog when you could instead be in small ring/middle cog or, if running triple, middle ring/middle cog, and still have approximately the same ratio.
