I'm having a really hard time doing comparative measurement. I can do sight-size just fine, but I don't know if by not being able to do comparative measurement, I'm missing out on anything.
>be me
>attempt comparative
>accidentally switch to sight-size while drawing
>giant eyes, tiny face, etc. etc.

Is it just practice?
4 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>3022355
Just focus more and do a light underdrawing of the general proportions, erasing and correcting it when you notice mistakes. Comparative measurement is quite easy and shouldn't take long to learn, especially if you can sight size already.

mark out two rough lines on the significant landmarks, i.e hairline and bottum of chin, then one cutting vertically. what's halfway? perhaps, if you're lucky the bottum of the nose, otherwise it shouldn't be too hard to find a shine or a birthmark somewhere. mark that. half it again, you should find some landmarks on lips/eyes etc. now you have horizontal plumb lines, which is easy enough. anything that falls onto those 8 lines you can be almost sure about. mark them in.

the hard part is connecting the angles. stick out your arm and find the angle from, for example, the bottum of the nose to corner of lip, or corner of eye. if the angle of your pencil doesn't match your paper, go back to the landmarks you are certain about, try again.

here's a rough example i've done of the angles you should measure

get in bitches, in this thread we draw and discuss drawing. Today subjects: do you study any artists? what does ''doing a study'' of something means to you? what did you learn or how do you feel master studies helped you?

thread rules:
>1. for the first post in this thread you have to post your work
>2. you can derail the thread in any subject you want, but only by accompanying your comment with one of your drawings related to said subject
>3. no bully
>4. no artist dramas

>inb4 why another DRAW THREAD? one is enough
the main focus of the draw thread is critique between artists, this one is for drawing while waiting for (you)s. Critiques and techniques talks are ok too, but not the main focus of this one, let the drawn subjects be the subject of the discussions.

We have to over saturate the board from ''industry talk and dramas' anyway, I see you guys complaining about the quality of the board too much. If this is a board for assisting ourself on the path to mastery, then this thread will be an brother to draw, alternative, porn, beg, ref, tower girls threads.

I appreciate your effort so ill post this sketch. The main thing i get out of doing studies is how to stylize. I tend to try to make stuff too realistic and as a result my art looks sterile and dry.

I am curious to see one of your ''more sterile and dry'' drawings as a comparison, btw I love that right leg of the girl on top and their hair, it's my list of things I like to see, but I see a tanged of that leg with the right arm of the girl in front, if you are going to invest more time into that I would recommend to fix it, unless is intended of course

>The main thing i get out of doing studies is how to stylize
I guess I am the opposite of that, I tend to focus too much on details when studying from real life which in turn meant I spend too much time on each object rendering details, so studying artists (like kjg for eg) taught me to focus only on silhouettes or lines which actually show something

I've hit a wall artistically now is the time when I push myself to overcome it or just say fuck it and get a normal job what should I do Anon?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>3022028
It's always time to abandon art and get a normal job. In fact, you probably took too long to reach this decision already.
>>
>>3022028
Art is THE "don't quit your day job" of all hobbies, anon.

But still, keep pushing yourself. With each piece, just see how far you can push it - gesture, rendering, perspective, composition. That's combined with thoughtful practice and references is how you get out of the plateau.
>>
>>3022030 I meant to say "keep my normal job"

>>3022031 Thanks for the advice. Do you have any suggestions on good places to practice online?

What're some good books for colour mixing, specifically watercolour? I've been trying out the medium but it's been really weird getting used to how colour works when my only other experience with colour is digital.

Books can only help so much. You need to build up experience and an eye for color.
The main things you need to know are how to adjust the value, saturation, and hue for a pool of paint. To do this, you need to know complements and develop quick formulas for common colors, like black.

As for books, Making Color Sing is one of the top recommended watercolor books out there

I've kind of wanted to pick up the book from the artist who made pic related and OP's chart. It is more of an encyclopedia than a guide for mixing, but it is definitely pretty to look at.

Agreed with >>3022044 though. This is a thing that you have to do on your own to get the most out of it. With experience, you can decide if you like certain mixes or opt for something unconventional. The advantage of this for this medium is that you can choose your favourite watercolour paint mix and put it onto your palette for ease/convenience. Could always set the paints next to each other into the same well without mixing.
That being said, you have to be mindful about the various properties attached to watercolour paints and pigments. You can like the way some colours mix, but not the opacity or granulation. Good luck, OP.
>>
I use Prismacolor watercolor pencils to lay down pigment at edges I want to shade then use a Pelikan travel kit to activate the pigment while wet, with additional pigment on the brush and scrub/rub as needed then I use goache when done to finalize any colors that need a deeper hue or glazes.

what are some traditional methods of rendering? is there some sort of universal methodology prevalent throughout the different media? I've been color picking like crazy and i know trad probably had a better way of doing things..

>>
it completely depends on what medium you're using. Oil painters usually use a method called fat over lean that involves using thicker more viscous layers first, then building up towards thinner. Watercolorists use washes to create depth and light. It's all different.

Also, years and years of practice is usually required to render properly, no matter what medium you choose.
>>
>>3021752
try limited palettes , like the zorn palette.

do you mean one that translates from traditional to digital. because they are pretty different.

also who is op image i like it.

365 days of drawings and posting artwork online, no matter how sick I was, no matter how busy or late it was, I drew.

A minimum of 1.5 hours each piece( this number is skewed due to many pieces taking more than 5 to 6 hours or more so let's just round up to 2.5 to low ball it)

Note: this does not include time spent reading and studying different artist methods and practices.

Average time spent this year on art was 912 hours.

That's 38 days of drawing, note this is while working a full time job.

So basically a month of drawing nonstop....
Let's see what those results gots me...
When I started this, this was the first piece I drew 365 days ago, let's see how it looks now...
What a shit show, way below professional quality

This year I put in 500 hours into overwatch and showed more improvement

Could have fucking hanged myself and shown more progress :/

what can i do to gain more progress?

>>
>>3020967
How many drawings did you do, 365? Aim for quantity, next time? Instead of 1 perfect drawing, 10 shit scribbles focused on learning one thing. Next year it will be minimum of 3650 drawings.
>>
>>3020967
Exactly the expected year progress unless you're talented.

Hello /ic/, I am but a humble man in search of someone is good at drawing starships and such, preferably in a Star Trek/Starfleet aesthetic. I need art for some Starfleet "fighters" with a more modern aesthetic than a peregrine falcon and a wider stance than a delta flyer, and I need essentially a Star Trek: Galactica hero ship picture. I'm willing to pay for commissioned works, and I figure there's either some people here who are good at it, or people here who can point me towards the right people to ask!

Pic unrelated.
