Does anyone here go through an artist identity crisis?
I'm at the point in my life where I'm not sure where to go with my art.
Some days I want to do cartoony/very stylized comic book art, and focus on the line work and do simple flat coloring or gradients. Babs Tarr, Alex Ahad, Der-Shing Helmer, or Tyson Hesse are some similar examples.
Other days I want to do highly rendered digital paintings, similar to Sakimichan, Ilya Kuvshinov and Ross Tran.
Then there's subject matter. Some days I just want to draw fanart, and others I want to focus on character design. If I were to be a full fledged illustrator, I can't have a portfolio full of fanart, but sometimes it's all I want to draw.
Hell, at this point I think I want to go into storyboarding since one of my dream jobs is to work for animation, but I can't animate.
I know in this day and age, to make it as an artist you need to have a big social media presence, but your art is basically your brand.
A part of me wants to do everything, illustration, comic books, storyboarding, character design. Another part of me wants to focus on one thing to make a brand for myself.
I'm not sure what direction to go into at this point and spend all my time and energy in.
Pic related, a quick sketch I did.

Yes, many people have that problem, and work in a variety of styles.
Put it all in the water, and see what catches traction.
You rarely get to decide the direction you're going to go in - it's like choosing a job. You put your resume or portfolio out there and see who calls.
Your "brand" doesn't have to be a hyperfocused style.
Once you are employed, your employment will help you direct your attention both in and out of work in more ways than you realize.

Just like that. So nobody replied. Don't get frustrated or take it personally, just keep fishing.
>>3024349
Don't go for a fucking style and that will be your style.
How does one begin to draw porn/smut?
There are no decent tutorials out there but so many people draw porn
I'm just looking for a starting point to branch out from
can you draw from imagination?
if so
just watch porn
draw from a different angle.
or just make it up using construction and use reference.
>>3024211
one must first develp a brain, which I am guessing you still haven't, since you posted a thread like this.
>>3024211
Doxy has good ones.
What worked for me was to stop midway through a fapping session and start drawing those juicy poses instead. Porn is full of good refs with beautiful gesture and if you have hormones racing through your body, they'll tell you what looks appealing and what doesn't.
+ a paper full of studies at the end will make you feel better than a nut ever could.
10.5 pros:
-anti glare screen
-better pen latency
-more storage
-more processing power
-better camera (for document and traditional drawing scanning)
-brighter screen
-can draw while standing
-more privacity while drawing on public
first gen 12.9 pros:
-more comfortable for drawing on a desk or while resting the device on your legs
-less zooming so you do not develop bad habits while drawing
-split view actually usable while drawing using references
So is the big screen on the old ipad enough reason to prefer it over the new 10.5 from an artist point of view? (Both are really close in terms of price and I don't have a cintiq so this will be my main device for digital drawing. Also I don't have enough money to buy the second generation 12.9 ipad pro)
Wait, using an iPad as an art student is normal now? Instead of a laptop or a notebook? that's fucking weird
pen latency improvements (the 120hz display allows a faster response time for the apple pencil):

The new iPad has, predictably, better hardware. I've done some research, and the old one is already pretty fucking good, though. It depends on how much you want the bigger screen (which would make it more comfortable to draw on), honestly, and if you can find a good discount on it (maybe buy a used one?).
Do any of you go to art school, or have any of you gone to art school?
If so, what have been the pros and cons?
I've been thinking about transferring from a fairly small and academically rigorous liberal arts to an art school to study fine art (drawing or painting).
I've been looking at RISD, Parsons, Pratt, and Cooper Union. What are some others I should consider?
One of my worries is that I won't be able to take enough English classes (which is also a passion of mine), but I know that there is a liberal arts requirement in most art schools. And something that is drawing me to RISD is the fact that I can take classes at Brown.
I go to MICA, and had similar interests to you. One of the draws to the school was that I could also take classes at hopkins.
This is all coming from a painting major, so I'm more interested in the fine art side of art school than the commercial majors like I assume most of /ic/ is, so take that into account.
The primary disadvantage of art school is the cost. It is an expensive endeavor, but I was able to get several scholarships that lowered the costs to almost nothing. If you have to go into significant amounts of debt to go to art school, it almost certainly isn't worth it.
That said, the advantages of art school to me outweigh the disadvantages. The instruction I've received has developed my work to a degree that just flat out wouldn't have happened had I not gone. Technical aspects of art can be learned independently to a certain degree, but it's tremendously hard to develop conceptual ideas, and to develop the vocabulary to talk about art without being immersed in the art world (of course, one on one instruction with talented professors helps technical ability a ton as well).
Additionally, the connections made in art school are what helps to launch people into the industries they're interested in. This is obviously a lot more relevant for commercial fields like graphic design or illustration, but many art schools also help fine artists develop proposals for shows, or host juried exhibitions which students can apply to. Many art schools also have networks of galleries which essentially scout students work out to represent them soon after graduation. I myself have been lucky to sell work straight off my studio wall because of this.
Lastly, what you get out of art school really is what you put into it. I've seen work on /ic/ that's absolutely leagues above some senior level illustration thesis work, and I've seen freshmen with no real formal art training come in, grind out drawings and studies, and come out significantly better than when they started.

The last thing I'll say is that you should definitely visit the school (be it RISD, Parsons, Pratt, etc) and take a tour, talk with faculty, sit in on a class, that sort of things. That will give you a much better idea of what to expect, and whether or not it's the right fit for you. I know most of /ic/ shits on art school because of its cost and the horror stories people tell about their experience with art school, but to a certain degree, you just have to check it out in person to get an idea if it's a good fit for you.
Good luck!
You will only get scholarships if you are a POC. This is a fact.
Can we list some NSFW-friendly websites for artists?
Tumblr is toxic shit and leaves artists in the dumpster. Shockingly enough, you'll get more meaningful interactions/replies from /r9k/. And that's a real fuckin' stretch. It's fucking sad and disgraceful at the same time.
Amino is full of kids/underage b&, Paheal is full of autistic fetish-whores who can't draw/take crit, and DeviantArt has the same problem, only multiplied to 9000.
Also, would prefer suggestions for hobbyist/student websites, not forums/chats, imageboards, or professional portfolios like Behance/ArtStation/Dribbble/ConceptArt.
Aside from Pixiv, Wysp, EroLair, BaraBox, and the now-defunct Nabyn, where else do you guys put your artwork?

furaffinity or weasyl(?) if you're into that sort of thing

/co/ hates my comic but what does /ic/ think of it?
>>3023060
I hate it. Take a break for a month and spend that time doing nothing but consuming genius comics and cartoons, it should rub off on you
Why is the monocle guy's values so dark?
>Those lines
Are you drawing in adobe flash?

I can't tell what going on in the top right. It looks like shit.
Is there an all purpose painting brush/settings for photoshop. What kind of brush/settings were used in this? I just want a basic brush that will work for everything, what percentage should I have flow at? I feel lost, what do the pros use?
>>3021554
round hard brush is the pinnacle of brushes
>>3021564
I like the hard round but i can't get nice blending out of it. what percentage opacity/flow do you use? or do you use something else for blending?
>>3021554
It's not very common to just use one brush, if so a hard round or flat is used which doesn't get you a very painterly look. I can see at least three brushes used in that painting, hard round, a wet one and a noisy one. That is a very good combination for most paintings, you need something hard to lay out blocks and shapes, then you sorta blend and mingle the noisy and wet one
I don't know how much automation is available in photoshop these days, I use paintstorm. You can go a long way with a hard noisy one (painterly texture and pattern) that smudges on lighter pressure. Craig Mullins used to say you should only use a hard round. Anyway don't get too hung up on this, a certain brush won't automatically make a pro out of you and it's easy to get bogged down. Noisy brushes are cool and all but can be hard to work with if you don't have a solid foundation
Literally what is your excuse for not learning 3D?
It's impossible to survive as a pro if you don't know how to use it.
Why do you tell yourself that its a crutch?
3D will never ever go away. Either learn to incorporate it in your work or perish.
YOU HAVE NO EXCUSE
>>3018700
Because I don't want to become a pro if it means photobashing.
Anyway I know 3D.
>>3018700
I dunno, there seem plenty of pros who are doing just fine without having to do 3D. Even concept artists working on projects that ARE fully 3D in the final product.
>>3018701
>Because I don't want to become a pro if it means photobashing.
I genuinely wish I could go back to being that naive and stay there.

Lick my tootsies, daddy.
I'm looking for artists who paint like Alberto Mielgo basically. Any one come to mind?
yeah there are a lot of these in /beg/
>>3023624
Ling Yun (his newer work), Robh Ruppel, Neil Kampbell Ross. There are a bunch of artists who often do studies in this style as well but they don't usually use it in their regular work.

Guys, I need some sense beaten into me :/
I've got some decent drawings, been drawing for a while now. But last two weeks I'm feeling like I'm total shit at this and I can't learn to draw. Just tried to draw today, my hand fucking hurts, drew some shitty werewolf thingy, posted it for 1 minute on facebook, deleted it and went sad that I can't draw...
Meanwhile I'm waiting on my Cintiq 27QHD, and I've got people I draw for who give me money here and then..
Motivation is something I can't seem to find anywhere..

Could someone please help me find a particular painting of children lying around a gym in fencing equipment holding swords? I've seen it several times on the wallpapers boards but cant seem to find it.

I hate this.

if you dont like it dont read it :)
Just normies making small talk, how awful.
"Haha, yea, my stepfather can't draw stick figures either, so he just sticks his figures up my ass"
I like that one. makes me feel special.
i want to paint en-plein-air to study, but I decided to move to a rainy shithole like the Pacific northwest. I have a portable gurney style watercolor/gouache setup, and really want to paint outside, but the lighting is so drab and boring that I don't feel inspired by anything.
The grey overcast sky light doesn't really reflect our bounce in an interesting way, so I'm just painting the actual color of things.
fuckin sucks buddy
I'm calling out to anyone who lives in any other cloudy rainy shithole. Does your environment inspire you? Do you paint outside? If so, what subjects have challenged you? Am I retarded?
>yes
Just go out and do it, Where i live it's sunny and only sunny all summer. The lighting and stuff is all fucky unless i stand in shade. And it gets kinda boring when i want to do some nice rainy paintings...
SO just do it mang, focus on the little things and you'll find beauty.
I discovered this book in grade seven and finally remembered it years later. It's a very in-depth overview, and it can show you how to mix primary colours in order to achieve a "broken" or neutral palette.
Guys, I am so peeved right now.
Little backstory:
I have a Wacom tablet, it's my second one, it's fairly recent, cost me 150$ around?
I've used it everywhere and on different computers with different internet speeds. The problem I'm about to tell you about I feel is the tablet's fault.
My problem here is that,
pictured left is me using the tablet itself. Took me about a minute and a few seconds to draw that, and it's not reminiscent of my style.
pictured right was freehanded with a mouse, and took me 25 seconds or less.
How do I fix this tablet issue? Are my strokes too fast? Do I have to change my pace? 'cause I don't want to.
I been drawing everyday since I was 5 give or take.
Anyone got this problem with tablets? Any good recommendations for something with -1 lag response time? I want it to feel like I'm drawing on paper.
