What do you folks know about cheap (<$3,000) saw mills? I need one desperately but I can't afford anything more than $4,000 (preferably $3,000).

Been looking at the Harbor Freight mill (it's ~$2,000) and watched some videos on YouTube. It appears to be good to go but I'm hesitant because, well, Harbor Freight.

Anyone own one or know about them? Any alternatives I should look at within my budget? I don't care if it's mobile as I'm going to stick it in a barn and never move it. I've also thought about building one (I can fabricate no problem and have a full metal shop to work with) but I haven't found any decent plans and for the cost of materials it seems just as cheap to buy one.

Only shills dislike harbor freight. Or "pros" who buy tools and abuse the fuck out of them. At the very least as long as you're not in some 3rd world shithole you'll have a 30-60-90ish day limited warranty. Try it out and return it?

I have huge amounts of old keys in my possession after I helped organize things from my grandmother's old hotel. I want to use them for art projects to show respect for my family's history (long line of women owning and running hotels). What are some cool projects I can do with keys to do this? It's mostly the old type of keys (stereotype key symbol), but also some kg of the modern type (pic related). Also, what equipment do I need to create something like pic related?

>Also, what equipment do I need to create something like pic related?

a mallet, a bowling ball, and a shitty welder. maybe an angle grinder and some clamps.
>>
>>1131645
what happened to the hotel?

if nothing else, frame them in a key box in display as an wall art will be quite suitable for any hotel lobby to show the history of the brand
>>

5 min Epoxy and an inflatable ball.

>15-20 kgs of old keys. What do.

Fishing lures
Arrow heads
Bump keys
Metalcasting material

Hello everyone.

I recently got this Cherry G80-1800 keyboard, and I noticed there's some sort of connector / magnetic reader on the top of it. Anyone know what model it is and how can I use it?
By the way, there's no specific keycaps that pos keyboard usually have, only the usual ones.

Thanks.

Hi, i bought a pull up bar (pic related), and i want to instal the heavy bag like in the picture, but i dont want the straps/chains to get twisted.

So my question is if its suitable to connect it with a carabiner-swivel-carabiner?

I'm worried if the weight resistance will not be enough or if you can tell me another details i need to take into account, i will appreciate it.

I want to install some panels on my boat and can't figure out why I would ever get 120 volt panels. I'm pretty bad at understanding electricity but it seems like 100 watts at 12 volts is 83 amps and would charge my batteries 83 amp hours in an hour. 100 watts at 120 volts isn't even 1 amp, but that seems so wrong. Where did I mess up?

For charging batteries you want lower amps.

>100 watts at 12 volts is 83 amps

Batteries can only be charged up to a certain rate. If you go above it you'll destroy the battery.

How do you guys store sensitive electronic things such as alightbulbs?

I got a bunch for my various vehicles and was wondering how you guys safely store them?

I replaced a bunch of bulbs for led's and I'd like to keep the old working bulbs as backups in the vehicle, but I'm worried the small little tackle/part organize boxes might cause the filaments to break and not properly protect them.

Thanks.

your car vibrates more than anything you could do to them other than dropping the bulbs.

just put them in some bubble wrap if you really want
>>
you should see how we keep them in the parts warehouse

and then you should see how we keep them at the auto shop before they go in your car

ive seen the drop in LED replacements vibrate to pieces before the filament one burnt out on the other side

just keep your greasy fingers off the glass

Shitty builders left me with leaky pipes! I've been trying to get to them to fix it but I can't reach them and hiring someone else is going to cost a fortune.

How wise would it be if I tried ripping all this shit off and fixing it myself?

Where do i go to get my bigass styrofoam block cut into letters?
I have my wedding coming up in a few months and i wanna make a love table like this. People rent it out for $300 a day and that's stupid expensive.
I was able to find a 8x4x3' Styrofoam block which is plenty big but i dont know who can hot wire cut this shit with good precision.
I went to a local sign business with CNC but they dont touch anything larger than 4".

Where do i go find a local hot wire cutter?

>>
>>1134290
ask the sign shop to cut you stencils out of thin ply or metal, you'll need two of each letter. Then make a hot wire cutter like the one shown in this video, it's simpler and cheaper than you think.

Sugar (pound)+ water(3.5 gallons) + yeast in a 5 gallon food safe bucket. Drill a hole in the lid, put a airlock on it. Duct-tape lid. Wait two weeks. Come back. pour off everything but the trub Run what you drained through a still Put more water and sugar in. Rinse and repeat.
Run through a still until it's clear.
A still setup is around 200$.

I've been wanting to build a DIY solar back up battery system for quite some time. I live on the top floor of an apartment building, and our patios are screened in.

Will the mesh make a big enough difference in solar charging that it would make it a fruitless endeavor?

Solar is pretty fruitless as it is.
My array drops off by over 50% if I neglect to clean my panels every few weeks/months. (Dusty driveway and pollen) I can't imagine that setting them up behind any obstruction is a good idea.

yes a screen will limit a cell, I bought a house with a roof top system in the sandy dessert they have to be cleaned daily or the very small sand dirt layer limits the cells to 87% normal capacity

I buy quality tools and take care of them. I have completed many major projects on my home and cars that I could never have afforded to hire out. So if say that even though I'm broke I have saved a fortune.
Guess if I got a job it wouldn't be diy anymore..
>>
>>1133291
Growing up my Dad /diy/ed everything because they simply couldn't afford to hire out.
Home repairs, furniture repairs, lawnmower repair, auto repairs, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, landscaping, fishing gear, the list goes on.
He could (and still can) take anything apart and put it back together.
He always had quality tools, even if they were 100 year old hand me downs and he always had me to go fetch them. I was the only kid in first grade who knew all the types of wrenches and could read sizes.
We still /diy/ almost everything, but now it's mostly out of the simple joy of doing it, but partially because I'm broke as shit.

Do you guys know some books I can read to learn how to design and make a powerboat? I'm a NAME (naval architecture and marine engineering) student, but I haven't started with the classes dealing with actual boatbuilding yet and I assume not much will be dedicated to powerboats. Any material dealing with working with fiberglass would be nice too.

Dont.

>>

theres a bunch of wooden boat plan pdfs floating around the internet. mostly out of old popular mechanics magazines from the 50's/60's.

you just build the boat as usual and do a few layers of fiber. can be done with hand tools.

Is there a solid toolset to start out with? Just have an awl, mallet and xacto right now. Would be nice if it included a swivel blade. See a bunch on amazon but don't know

trying to change my own oil on my truck ('03 S10 if it matters) for the first time and I can't get the fuck-damn drain plug to move

I started with a box end wrench and managed to nicely round the plug over without it budging at all

I have some penetrating oil, vice grips, and a hammer and tried pounding on it a bit and still no movement

so now I have a rounded over and chowdered right to fuck drain plug that is tighter than loli-puss and I'm running out of options

anyone got any tips or tricks?
I'm willing to buy inexpensive tools to get it off

pic related but not mine, it's a chowdered right to fuck drain plug

You used an SAE on a metric bolt or reverse didn't you? Don't do that.

First things first, buy a new bolt because you will get the old one out and not be able to go anywhere.

Second. Buy a helicoil set for whatever the next size up from the drain plug is. You may or may not need it so keep the receipt.

Having found the size of the bolt (hopefully) Figure out the inner diameter of the threads. There's charts for it. Figure out the next size down with an OD at least .050" smaller

Buy a drill and a LEFT handed tap for it, hope you've got a good drill. Buy new bolt for said tap. Don't get a fine thread, like 32TPI. Get something in the teens.

Drill and tap the old bolt, put new one in and start turning. This will either break the old bolt free and make it start turning or it'll shatter and you can just start digging the bits out. Don't buy a cheap bolt for the smaller one, get something good so it doesn't shatter instead. After it's all cleaned out, check with new bolt. If it looks good return the helicoil set. If not, helicoil the bitch.
>>
>>1131047
nah
15mm head size on the drain plug which is what I used
unless Merlin put the wrong drain plug in it when I had the oil changed last (not impossible)

I already have a new drain plug

drilling and tapping a new bolt into the old one is a bit beyond my skill level
have any ideas that are a bit less escalation to try first?
also, what is helicoil?
