What do you folks know about cheap (<$3,000) saw mills? I need one desperately but I can't afford anything more than $4,000 (preferably $3,000).

Been looking at the Harbor Freight mill (it's ~$2,000) and watched some videos on YouTube. It appears to be good to go but I'm hesitant because, well, Harbor Freight.

Anyone own one or know about them? Any alternatives I should look at within my budget? I don't care if it's mobile as I'm going to stick it in a barn and never move it. I've also thought about building one (I can fabricate no problem and have a full metal shop to work with) but I haven't found any decent plans and for the cost of materials it seems just as cheap to buy one.

get one used.
>>
Only shills dislike harbor freight. Or "pros" who buy tools and abuse the fuck out of them. At the very least as long as you're not in some 3rd world shithole you'll have a 30-60-90ish day limited warranty. Try it out and return it?
>>
>>1131858
Or you know, people who don't want to spend every other weekend returning a tool.

my previous bosses brother bought a cheaper sander from Bunning and used it non stop for a few months restoring his house and returned it every time it shat itself until he eventually asked for a full refund when he finished renovating as per Australian consumer laws.

Same exact boat as op here. Will be a few months but i'm getting 1 with a trailer or building a trailer.

You ever been logging OP? It sucks elephant dick...

Also, get stiff push broom and brush every slab near spotless or it will mold and fuck your shit up bad. It's a lot of fucking work but then again so is running a sawmill all day.

Worked for a day helping a local guy hmwho build one with a volkswagon. Pretty cool.

Always STAY THE FUCK BEHIND the blade OP. I've heard they can come off and kill u.

All the advice i got i guess.

You should have no problem repairing the HF if it breaks.
You may even see where you could improve it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it basically just a big bandsaw turned on its side and run on a track? I see bandsaws going for scrap price at auctions all the time, I would imagine you could pick up two or three tear them down for parts and then resemble in your desired configuration. The most expensive part would be a new motor for the thing, and that's fairly affordable.
>>
You could check out Matthias Wandel's plans for a sawmill. I'm sure you could enbiggen it if needed.

Buy one, ditch the the rail system it comes with and replace with one piece rails. Add an extra up right to either side to increase the rigidity of the head and you are good to go. Put it on a trail if you can

Lol. Yet. Working on getting a trailer mounted saw mill and a tractor. Was hoping you had a cheaper way. Or easier. ...fuck i hate logging.

Nvm. Great idea. Seen hydraulics but never thought of using hf meme machine. I got one that may be big enough.

I'm the guy with the mill in the pictures. Yes, I thought being a lumberjack would be fun and rewarding. No, it fucking sucks. It's mind boggling the amount of work the few boards you get. I understand why wood costs what it does.

I would not trust anything as dangerous as a saw mill from harbor freight. Electrical tape and things that can't mutilate you when they ultimately fail on the second use are fine, but not a saw mill.
>>
>>1135138
Exactly why? It's nuts, bolts, bearings, v-belts, gas engine and a Lennox wood master C-Sharp blade trapped in a metal cage. Please explain how it's going to kill me.
