Do you guys make pixel art at all?

I've been wanting to for a while now, so I sat down and made this. Took me about a half hour honestly. Critique is welcome.

Looks like typical indie pixelshit. Completely unremarkable in every way, and will get you no attention.

It shows. But hey, you have the skills of pretty much every indie designer who's ever gotten on Steam.

Pillars of Eternity™

Nintendo (and media in general) love to repackage their older games and update for newer hardware, sometimes altering the game for better or worse.

What do you think is the superior version of a game? Personal examples would be great.

For instance I think Metroid: Zero Mission is only option if you want to play the "original' Metroid. If nothing else, then because of the in-game map.

To go the opposite direction, I think the Famicom version of MOTHER/Earth Bound, is way better than the GBA version. Same for MOTHER 2/EarthBound as well. You can't just take a tile based game and remove the tile-based movement. It's like Ninten is ice-skating around the entire world. That and the soundtrack is truly a mess, considering how fantastic the Famicom one is.

What's the point of mashing everything in one thread/image? I'd rather post it in threads dedicated to the series or at least the genre.

I was chatting with a friend about who play/hack old games and consoles. I was tempted to say it is fairly balanced, but have nothing to back up my claim.

There was a poll thread recently, if it hasn't been archived. I'm pretty sure age was mentioned, but probably not gender. I gather the average age was mid-twenties to just barely bordering on thirty.

Anyway. 31, male. Grew up with the third and fourth generations, but had some access to second-generation games as well.

Is there ANY reason to play on original consoles when emulators exist? Higher rendered resolutions, higher frame rates, save states, cheats, highly customizable, you can use any controller, mods and texture packs, etc.

To prove to /vr/ that you're white.
>>
>>3314616
Consoles just werk, no settings to fiddle with, and are easier to use with old tvs.

Otherwise it's based on emotions. It just feels nice to have a shelf of games. I feel more dedicated to play a game that I sought out and spent money on. And nostalgia obviously.

I use both, but I usually enjoy playing the real thing more.
>>
>>3314626
I am white as fuck, but it baffles me. I understand the appeal of the real thing and physical discs/cartridges, but you get a better experience for so much less with emulation.

Are emulators allowed in speed running, competitive play or high scores?

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

So i'm in a bit of a pickle here

I currently play my ps1 light gun games on a ps2 connected to my pvm with component cables. The guncon one has the composite splitter built into the cable, so you just plug it into the where your green component cable would go and then plug in the actual green component cable to piggy back off that. That's how you get sync and it all just works nicely.

However, I bought two guncon 2's lately and they both lack the Y splitter on the cable, leaving just the yellow composite plug and a usb cable. I can't find the specific Y-Splitter anywhere on ebay or trading sites. Has anyone had any luck using a off the shelf Y-splitter in it's place?

I remember that game being one of the hardest game ever.

I would rate the levels From Easiest to Hardest this way:

Port Of Adia- still quite a challenge for the first level, and its probably the easiest area to accidently pass by mission objectives (after the Hive, that is).

Primagen's Lightship- Theres plentiful ammo and health strewn about and none of the enemies are particularly infuriating. Thanks to the fantastic structure, it's not too much hassle retracing your steps for quest items etc. the fans and lasers are bothersome at times though.

Death Marshes- The new arsenal you find admidst this level (Shredder especially) keeps the enemies at bay for the most part, though the heavily armoured fellas still take a beating. Took me a while to learn to keep away from the health sapping bogs altogether. The music in this level scared the shit out of me.

River of Souls- Favorite level, long but varied. Challenging but not annoying. Undead Battles and the Riding Gun section are my favorite parts of the game.

Lair of the Blind Ones- Humongous! Seemingly never-ending! Guardian's bows are purty powerful and tedious jumping sections over bottomless pits I never welcome in any game. Not to mention the underwater section, your maps almost obligatory there! A nice array of foes to face though, the atmosphere is impressive and the enviroment varies enough to stop it growing repetitive... unlike the Hive.

Hive of the Mantids- Honestly.... how irritating are the drones, the STANDARD enemies in this level? Pain in the backside to successfully hit and over-effective weapons. Incredible looking level when you first set foot in it, but 30 mins or so in the difficulty somewhat sours the experience, endless complex networks of tunnels, paths to mission objectives never obvious... dunno how long I spent hunting for one last lousy satchel charge.

I hated how there was absolutely no ammo for the torpedo launcher anywhere and if you use all the ammo, you couldn't even equip the weapon. That wouldn't be a big deal if you didn't need it's speed boost to make it through one underwater section before running out of air. I also got stuck for a month or so in the Hive of the Mantids. There was like a portal or something that was hidden behind a destructible wall that I never could seem to find.

Sadly, I never beat it without resorting to cheats. They shouldn't have unlocked cheats after you kill certain bosses.
>>
The main thing I remember about this game is getting a boner when that one boss would use the move where it uses its tentacles to pull itself toward you and smash into you ass first.

Anyone going to be doing the 4 job fiesta this year?

http://fourjobfiesta.com/

Basically if you don't know about it:

>Play FF5 with some imposed limitations
>jobs are assigned via twitter bot when you get a crystal
>you cannot use jobs other than the assigned job
>Once you get your first job all characters must be assigned that job
>you must use at least 1 of each job (IE: If you got Knight, then next unlock is Red Mage you have to have at least 1 Knight and 1 Red Mage , the other 2 can be Red Mages or Knights)
>Other options for harder runs like Berserker Risk (adds Berserker to each crystal), or Classic Jobs only.

I got a really shit run last time but still managed to complete it. I'll probably play it again today. Starts in about 5 days.

I guess if enough people are interested we can post progress itt and make it a bit of a general.
