Okay /vr/, I've always been a Nintendofag but have been trying out the Genesis/MD through emulation and it's pretty nice. I'm interested in purchasing one but have seen quite a bit of conflicting information.
What is generally considered the best revision? I've seen many sources stating that model 1 with the HD graphics tagline is the best but other people swear by the model 2.
How does region locking work? I've seen some sources saying it's completely region free, others say that JP and US are completely compatible but PAL is not, and others saying there is no inter-region compatibility whatsoever.
Lastly, in the same vein, what is the region compatibility like on the 32x? Does the 32x have to match the region of the base system? Do 32x games have to match the 32x region, the base region, or both?
I'm sure more questions will come up throughout the thread but that's all I've got for now.

HD Graphics.
With the longer serial code on the bottom.

Sorry, fixed the link
Apparently people are really fond of talking shit about megaman X5, some even going as far as branding it the worst game of the series on a world where Megaman X7 is a thing (perhaps their minds have deleted any memories related to that abomination as a way to keep their sanity intact).
I genuinely enjoyed that game a LOT, and i think it is the best PS1 megaman game. Can somebody at least explain why so much hate for such an enjoyable game?
I love the game itself, it feels like it builds on x4...although the graphics aren't my favorite...anyway, here's a breakdown:
The game constantly stops you to waterboard you with unnecessary text, and boy does that fuck up the flow of the game. Also, boss's name...completely shit the bed. Game is way too easy and the graphics leave a little to be desired.
>>3323589
I liked it, but didn't really play it--save scummed on emulator.
The translation really bothered me l, it's so god awful in all the psx games.
I don't remember if it was 5 or 6 that had the random upgrade chips but didn't really enjoy that mechanic.
I disliked 6 because it shat on the rockmen zero canon.
Yeah, the X5+ series fuckled what coherence there was to the megaman storyline from the X series onward
is there literally any other than this fucker and probably some shit from the SMT series
way better than that gay ass greek shit and the all but eradicated celtic mythos (holy shit thanks for recording your history in songs and indecipherable runes you assholes)

aren't they members of that butt fucking cult where everyone tries to butt fuck their way to the top of the pyramid to become closer to divinity or something?
Like they literally have organized man hunts for the sport of murder and then have a pagan blood party before butt fucking each other using the blood of peasants as lube
Any thoughts on the game?
The 360 version is bullshit, it doesn't have the Game Gear games on it.
>>3323471
Fucking shit aside from the cheesy music. I have no idea how someone can recommend this game
>>3323471
Moderately fun but very unpolished. Has some pretty bad level design issues at times. The Rose levels are bad, and the Big levels are horrible. The other characters can be pretty fun though.
The world seems empty, like there are people, but not enough. The soundtrack compliments the world surprisingly well for a game with such mediocre environments.
The dialogue and voice acting is bad, but in a really entertaining way. It's really cheesy in its delivery.
All in all it feels like they accidentally released it when it was still in beta.
So Ive been thinking on changeing the battery in some of my GBC games
However Im confused on what type of battery to use
Do I have to use a 1616 battery or can I use anyone I would like?
>>3322840
It says right fucking there that it uses a CR1616 battery.
Of course you could use goliath D type batteries too, if you'd solder a battery holder extension onto the cart.
Sure, just shove a fatass AA battery in there.
I heard that these have a certain battery just like in the OP, but could a larger volt one be solderd instead?

Same thing
Hi, /pol/-kun.
Rush'n Attack has you infiltrate a Russian base to rescue POWs.
Conversely, Guerrilla War puts you in the role of two communist soldiers setting out to defeat a dictator. I believe the game's backstory was subject to some censorship by SNK out of fear of anti-communist sentiment in the West though.
please tell me ii'm not the only one who likes Final Fantasy I to VI because the new ones doesn't feel like FF
>>3321409
No you aren't, plenty of other people shit on anything that doesn't fit their autistic definition of what a game should be like.
If it makes you feel any better, I only liked the first one. And I didn't play it until like, 2010.
On the other hand, I also haven't played any of the 3D FF games.

Pretty sure there's still arcades in major cities. I don't know about the diversity of their games though, I wouldn't be surprised if many of them are focused on Street Fighter V with a House of The Dead cab in the corner.
Plus there's always barcades, if that's your thing.
Was he the true hero of the Resident Evil games?
God bless you Tofu.
Yes didn't you read the manga?
Truly the hero to surpass Metal Gear.
Can i get some recommendations for some good rpgs? Im lookin for games with awesome characters and stories. Ive played ff9, grandia, chrono trigger, chrono cross, xenogears, and ff7. Ps1 and snes preferredpsp and ds are ok too if anything comes to mind
Thanks guys
My personal favorite is Breath of Fire 4.
Though if you liked Grandia check out the Lunars
>>3319108
I'd recommend
Final Fantasy Tactics and Valkyrie Profile
>>3319120
I know the stories are independent, but if there any reason to play bof3 before 4?
I tried the gba port of lunar, but i actually fell asleep about 2 hours in. Does it get less boring?
Is it worth it to pay out the ass for an original and rare game like earthbound if you are just a person who loves retro and wants to experience the game on original hardware? Why not a reproduction cart? These carts seem like a viable alternative.
Is there any objective difference to playing a repro vs the real thing?
>>3318381
if you're getting a repro you may as well just get a flashcart.

I agree OP having eight extra lives is bullshit it only takes one.
Can we have an Intellivision thread? I never see this platform discussed on /vr/. Then again, anything from the second generation is rarely mentioned outside Atari 2600.
>>3315738
you can go ahead and post some stuff about it, but i guess people don't talk about it because they don't know much (if anything) about it
My creepy crack head uncle had one but I never got to play it. I was a colecovision kid myself, but I keep meaning to give the intellivision a whirl, at least for that neat looking pinball game it has.
It seems odd, but most people who are still interest in video games in their late 20s or early 30 grew up on third or fourth gen. People who were actually alive when second gen was relevant don't really care that much for the gaming industry, probably because lost interest after the gaming crash.
The fact that most so-called historians lump the 2600 and 5200 in the same generation category betrays a lack of interest in those consoles.
Which is the best of the original Mortal Kombat games in your opinion. Mine is Mortal Kombat 2 because of the varied stages, good music, and some of my favorite fatalities in the series(Kung Lao's hat slice being my favorite). Downsides for that game are lack of Kano and lack of Sub Zero ripping out spines. But what's your favorite?
>>3305162
mine is MK3, cause nostalgia factor and it probably played the best for the original MK games.
>>3305162
2 easily.
I never liked the dial combos and run button in 3 and it was much better than 1.
>>3305162
UMK3 for me. Played a bunch of MK1&3 on DOS as a kid and never played 2, but loved 3. Then Ultimate came out.
Quake's b-day is coming up in a couple of days, and I can't wait that long dammit!
Let's play/discuss Quake.
