What are the best NES games not already included on the NES Classic?
I mean you could easily just look up a list of top 100 NES games. Form your own opinions and shit. Nobody knows your preferences.

I really just wanted to make a Shin Megami Tensei thread. I'm a complete newcomer to the series, without really any context or idea what these games were about. I decided to go against every recommendation and start at the beginning with SMT1.
I'm so glad I did, this game is a gem. The encounter rate is silly, but everything else is interesting as hell and I'm having a great time with the game. The atmosphere and worldbuilding are well done, and the plot completely took me by surprise. I'm becoming quite fond of the RPG mechanics as well.
>>3760708
How are you planning on progressing through the series?
>>3760719
I basically want to finish off SMT1 (I think I've got a fair chunk of game to go, I am in the middle of the Police Station). After that is SMT2.
I doubt I will be able to play IF because the translation is never coming out. After that I'm kind of stumped, because there are a large number of options, depending whether I just want to focus on the main games, side series, chronological release order, etc.
>>3760732
If you wanted to play a game that feels like a natural progression of SMT 2 I'd recommend Soul Hackers and Strange Journey (not retro).

I sometimes thing about the space a gamestop occupies in a local mall, as there has been a game store there continuously since it was originally an Electronics Boutique that opened in the 80's. Much like this one in the pic. The EB when I got games like Metroid new for my NES, an Atari Lynx, even a Suncom joystick for my Atari 7800, and saw everything from a Neo Geo, to import Saturn games, to stuff I wish I bought like a cheap X'Eye, to Turbografx, SNES, and on and on.
All but a distant memory. It's weird to think that the same space where I once saw a copy of something as esoteric as the Saturn "Konami Antiques MSX Collection" is now full of bland broshit. On a positive note, lots of those treasures from that golden age are at least still at large in my area.

>walk into retro reseller place at local mall
>it's the only place in the mall that smells like cat piss
>even the pet store doesn't smell like cat piss
>180 and never look back
I went to an EB Games the other day because I realized I hadn't visited a brick and mortar place to acquire vidya in a long time. About 1/4 of the store was games, and they were all shoved in the back. The rest of the store was a bunch of "gamer culture" trash and trinkets to utterly throw away your money on. The entire long wall which used to house the Sony/MS console games is now *entirely* populated with those godforsaken pop! culture figures, which basically litter any store that stocks them with piles of themselves.
Absolutely disgusting. I still have the memories though, I guess.

I remember as a young lad my mom worked at Sears. Which had a pretty solid VG dept. When I was in 2nd grade she got me Zelda. I was pretty pumped. Then Babbagges, and Electronics Boutique came in. Actually the first games I bought with my own dosh were at that store. (CV 3 and Maniac Mansion). Then Funcoland opened up across the street and they had games for fucking 50 cents. The ships sailed amigos.
Thoughts about this game?
Amazing
good style, godly music but little on the easy side
I'm so confused. I don't get what I'm doing wrong, mind you I haven't bothered to read the manual. You get through a level, and the character at the end of the level is sad and droopy. But I saw let's play videos and whenever the player gets to the end, the character gives the player something and acts completely different.
But I can't figure out what I am doing different. Am I missing something?
UK blokes, how do you feel about the Spectrum?
I'm on it.

bleh
My grandpa used to own one.
Have you played Panzer Dragoon Saga? I've completed it recently and it's still on my mind. Very short game, and some of the dungeons felt like they dragged on a little bit, but there's really something special here. The combat is absolutely tremendous too, I love how if you strategize correctly, you can absolutely destroy bosses with incredibly risky strategies. Makes it very satisfying to find those little parts to exploit and just chain ridiculous sums of damage on a boss, extremely satisfying too.
What did you think of it? Any favorite parts? How about the soundtrack, which song sticks to you most?
>>3755342
I have it on my back log for a longer time, feel like I need to finish Panzer Dragoon 2 before playing it.
I ordered PD2 recently and played Saga until I finished disc 1, loving it so far.
>>3755342
As a guy that's not big into rpgs I loved it. The battle system was very engaging and never became boring. The art direction of all the Panzer games(especially saga) are my favorite if all time. Music was great, story was decent, and graphical for a Saturn game it looked fantastic.
I only have 3 gripes and they are small. The game is short. Perfect length for plowing thru on a weekend but I always wanted more. It's easy especially after the first play thru. Wish they could of added a hard mode. Most magic other than looking pretty is useless.
It's still one of my all time favorite games and I just wish more people could try it out. Its a shame they lost the source code and that the current price for a complete copy of Saga is stupidly high.
My rating:
11/10
>>3755356
I really liked the length, it didn't feel stupidly long at any point. It didn't feel like "well, we need to save the world but this local farm where they raise oversized chickens sure is something!" There's a real sense of urgency in its delivery. It's short but wraps itself up extremely neatly. I have to disagree about magic, however, the high level berserks are extremely useful. It was really nice having every boss pretty much be something you need to learn rather than dump your most powerful attacks into, they were very strategic. I can't really think of a single fight in this game that's just spam ultra attack until it dies.
How good are you at puzzle games?
>>3754621
Not good at all. It's one genre that just doesn't mesh with me. Mean Bean Machine was my first Game Gear game, though, because it was that or some shitty sports game.
My gf is good at Dr. Mario and Tetris. And she loves Picross for some reason.
I broke Tetris Attack vs mode. Only endless is fun now.
>>3754621
I'm a TGM tryhard and I'm pretty good at it
And I broke Dr. Mario on the SNES

It's 6th May 1995.
Your mission is make Sega Saturn the winner of its age. But
You cannot go back to make Saturn a proper 3d games console.
You cannot go back to make the lauch a success.
Sony will be Sony
How would you do so?
How
Do I have a lot of money?
Localize weeaboo games in America and Europe.
Hire better marketers to push Sony's shit in.
Tell Naka to piss off and take his engine and use it for a new Sonic game.
Port more older arcade games to Saturn, like Golden Axe RoDA and OutRunners.
Suck Square and Capcom's cock

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!
>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.
Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories
