Can we have a conversation about whether or not SM64 is a 'collectathon'? I hate the term myself, and it might sound like an insipid discussion at first but actually, the other day when some whippersnapper on /v/ started arguing with me about it things got interesting - we ended up talking about the function and utility of Stars in SM64, and its underlying game design principles and techniques. His whole argument was that SM64 was a collectathon by virtue of the simple fact that you need to collect Stars to progress through the game; I contended the game was first and foremost a 3D platformer, and the role of Stars in the game is purely superficial. I'm not sure collectathons were even a thing back when SM64 came out - the term itself certainly didn't exist yet, then.

I would say it's a collectathon, just because you need to do different goals and objectives to get different stars. like collecting 100 coins or 8 red coins.
>>
>>3761619

definitely not a collectathon
>>
>>3761619
I think first, we need to look up the vocabulary definition of the term "collectathon":

…Oh right, there isn't one! Meaning, your autistic argument was completely pointless.

Do you plan on becoming a paladin?
If not choose thief but add some magic stats if possible.
Thief has the most fun storyline I think.

>stats and race
I'm assuming you mean class and not race. And as I recall there's only three in the first game and four overall: Fighter, Thief, Magic User and Paladin. I'm guessing for the fifth class you're thinking Hybrid.

I'd really recommend not doing a Hybrid build until you've beaten it the other way. And definitely don't do >>3761238 that.

It sucks all the replayability (of which the game has an enormous amount) right out when you have access to every single route for overcoming problems. It's all about finding the way to solve the same quests in a different manner.

Like the Spitting Flowers.
>The Mage casts Fetch to telekinetically grab the seed.
>The Thief has no magic, so he climbs the mountain wall to grab it.
>The Fighter can't cast or climb, so he throws rocks to knock it down to the ground.

Coming to the same puzzle on multiple playthroughs and figuring out how you'll overcome them without the skills of your last character is half the fun of Quest for Glory.

Anyone have any experience with the Pi Hut controller? Seems to have good reviews but you never know.

It's... Okay. I went into it expecting something like Shining force but you only ever control four team-mates max. Ship-battles were a major let-down for me since I thought you'd be able to assign crew members to do this or that but it's not really that deep.

Either version's fine but if you decide to play the gamecube button do take note that you can press the start button at the beginning of certain attack animations to skip them. Also the gamecube version's just more refined in general.

For Sierra, I'd say:
King's Quest 5 or 6
Police Quest
Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers

Police Quest is pretty unique game in that its puzzles are designed to make you follow strict police procedure when dealing with characters/criminals (you'd better not use unwarranted force you sniveling cadet!).

Hon. mention to Space Quest 4, which is a funny space pulp adventure but is mechanically almost identical to King's Quest.

Also hon. mention to Phantasmagoria, but that's more of a "play around Halloween type of game." Not really scary, but atmospheric with some goofy FMV acting. The puzzles are pretty simple but it's worth it to take in the town. A superior FMV-style game is Gabriel Knight 2.

It's easy to burn out on these type of games, so I think it's best to look into a few, see which style you like the most, and play that one to completion.

Are the early 20 year olds who'll pay anything for the consoles they loved as kids the reason why common SNES games are $40 when their famicom counterparts are under $10 for example?

Are they why the normie consoles like the NES, SNES, and N64 are heralded as the face of retro gaming ignoring things like the Genesis, FDS, and retro computing which for the 80's at least was the REAL face of retro gaming?

Yes that's right. It's the normal people who are spending their disposable income on things they want that are the problem. Not retarded weirdos who bitch on the internet about being poor.

I have a job and have a decent collection senpai. Granted most of it is obscure shit but it always seemed weird to me that a 20 year old game is still being sold for $60 at times just because nostalgic faggots will buy it.

What is your favorite version of the ORIGINAL arcade SFII? Not Super, X, Anniversary, or console ports, but the original CPS1 games:

World Warrior (aka the Thinking Man's SFII)

Champion Edition (aka Why is the Snake Orange Edition)

Turbo: Hyper Fighting (aka The Official Bootleg SFII)

*insert SFII bootleg here* (aka ChingChong Edition)

Aka fighting in a swimming pool, aka 8 chars where 2 are pretty much the same.

Everything before Super was broken. 3 hits = dizzy rule killed the game. Super acknowledged combos and toned down dizzies, finally allowing for matches that didn't end with 1 hit. If you hate Super, you're a pleb and a casual and should stick to Smash Bros.

For a while I've been mulling over picking up a 3DO. While I emulate some games and get a better feel for it, I wonder if any enthusiasts can answer some hardware/software questions. I did see the thread that was a few days ago/last week, which was somewhat helpful/interesting.

MODEL: while general consensus seems to point towards the FZ-10 being the most reliable model, there are some who still tout the FZ-1 as the sturdiest. My intention is to pick up a FZ-10, because my assumption is that the flip-top and lack of moving parts makes for a machine less prone to breakdown. Is this a right assumption?

REGION: I have read about the minuscule amount of kanji problems that can come from a select few imports. Thus i have decided it might be best to pick up a Japanese model. However, if there are a few JPN games that don't work on NTSC-U models, is the inverse true, with a few USA games not working on the Japanese? Or is my suspicion groundless?

Those are the two major questions I am considering. Aside from that, feel free to talk anything 3DO.

I'll probably be keeping my eye on YAJ listings (many of which unfortunately are vague on condition and workability due to the language barrier).

[Disclaimer 1] I have time to think about it since I am going to wait for a deal or a decent price to pop up among the various auction sites; I'm not looking to spend triple digits on getting a console.
[Disclaimer 2] Yes I have more money than sense! I'm working on reversing that though (wait a minute).
[Disclaimer 3] I like silly FMV games.

Advice for someone who actually has a Jap FZ-10

Don't.

There just aren't enough good games for the thing and the prices are too high. I got mine through a yahoo japan reseller and didn't pay to much, but still more than I thought that I should have.

The only good games that could be played on the thing have drastically better ports on other consoles. The console itself has shit video output. I even bought S-Video cables which only made it look like polishing a turd. It has weird issues with black levels and everything looks washed out. It should have been a 240p console. I'm pretty sure the original model 3do is the same.

Just stick to emulation. Unless you are a diehard collector
>>
FZ-10 seems to be the most reliable

There aren't a lot of games (since most were ported)

but you should try these:

exclusive:
Bladeforce
Oukoku no Grand Chef
The Seal of Pharoh
Immercenary
Scramble Cobra
Stellar 7
Iron Angel of the Apocalypse
Iron Angel of the Apocalypse Returns
Autobahn Tokio
Armageddon
Guardian War
Dr Hauzer
Slayer
Cyberdillo

multi plat:
Doom
Super Street Fighter II Turbo
Off world interceptor
Total Ecplise
Luciennes Quest
Policenauts
Po'ed

In all honesty, I think that the only thing keeping it up these days is 90's kids unending nostalgia for it. While I was alive for it's release, I honestly didn't give two shits about the N64 back then, all we had around here was a PC. (Voodoo 5500 pentium 2, about 200 times more advanced than N64). The game is tossed around on websites and forums by millennial who's first console was probably a hand me down N64 in the early 2000's, so I'm wondering is all the love real?

Anyways, more recently when I got into retro gaming, I decided to give it a try, promised the gaming experience of a lifetime for it's 10/10 gameplay, story, music, BLAH BLAH. The game was boring. I just couldn't get into it, or it's gameplay style. Who likes running across an open field back and forth, back and forth to get a sword? I mean, is that what people consider fun? And the dungeons and some items which are not intuitive in the slightest? The great music? Yeah, if shitty compressed midi qualifies as good music then maybe

I fucking love ALTTP, infact it's my favorite game of all time, and I managed to beat it without a guide. I don't know, maybe it's that I just don't have 3D sensibilities. One way or the other, I honestly think that the absolute only thing keeping it on such a pedestal is nostalgia, as someone who played it for the first time much, much later

If you find that people's hype tends to leave you wanting when playing said hyped games, perhaps you should just stop giving a fuck about what other people think and decide if you like a game on your own.
