Did anyone else have this sweet chunk of plastic when it came out? It had pretty decent graphics, yet no one ever talks about it. I still remember buying large packs of batteries just to keep it powered.

I did.

Never had that many games for it though. Never bothered with batteries either, just plugged it directly into the wall.

>I still remember buying large packs of batteries just to keep it powered.
Yeaaaahhh that was mainly why it didn't do so well.
>>
People talk about it often, It just didn't have as many good games as the inferior gameboy, and that's what really matters.

I liked the GG megaman games way more than the GB ones

Hey /vr/ , i was doing a lot of research by myself but after all ,i thought the best place to ask is right here. So ,can we make a list with the best songs in retro gaming ,with lyrics? Wanna start with:
>>Eyes on me (FFVIII)
>>One Winged Angel (FFVII)
>>Melodies of life (FFIX)
>>Suteki da ne (FFX)
>>Small two of pieces (Xenogears)

>the 3D effect are great, as good as 3DS if not better
>the music is fucking amazing, the way it sounds inside my ears like i'm wearing earphones feel really good
>spend time playing until thing run out of batteries after around 15 minutes

What the hell? Why has this thing such a bad reputation? Are the other games for it that terrible?

It has a bad reputation because it failed, and very few people ever owned one.
The few people who tried it all loved it.
Some people who tried it said it made their eyes/head hurt, this was probably due to not adjusting the focus and IDP switches.
>>
its only fault was having cheaper red leds that gave it an eerie feeling

Blue and green LEDs would have been too expensive when the VB released.

Gonna see how far I can get with one credit in the pinnacle of the series: Metal Slug 3. I'll post the results later.

How good are you at the games, /vr/? You suppose SNK will do justice to a new game in the series or do you think mobile junk is all they're good at?

Not as good as I was hoping. I died a couple of times in the second level. Once to the yetis, and another to the aliens while trying the zombie trick.
>>
>>3925939
>MS1
I'm pretty good until last mission where I usually lose my first live in the boat with the turret, after that the homing barrage of tracing rockets Morden shoots may or may not kill me again. Usually 1cc it.
>MS2 and X
Last train tends to kill me because I go cheap on the [G] weapon and try to kill it with grenades only.
Last stage is safe until the boss there I die too much to try to save face.
>MS3
In the piramid level, man eating plant section wreks me, acid bug section is more easy but I have to fight the temptation to kill myself to see sweet Fio's ass.
The boss isn't really that bad.
Last stage is somewhat easy until the Zombie clones chase, also, never learned how to evade Rootmars bubble rain.
>MS4
Never played it too much, I tend to forget the levels
>MS5
As soon as the second stage I start to fuck up.
>MS6
I don't like it, only played it once.

>but I have to fight the temptation to kill myself to see sweet Fio's ass.
I sympathize with you. Zombie clone section's pretty easy once you've practiced it a bit. Rootmars fight is just stupid. Strategies I've seen involve stockpiling a ton of grenades on your journey there and using them all up. You've also gotta abuse the invincibility time you get from jumping out of the metal slug. Not one of the best boss fights in the game but only slightly better than a majority of the ones to come in the sequels.

So, what is the best course of action for when this thing starts to go wobbly? I have only heard bad things about the gamecube replacement and $25 for the replacement+PCB v3 seems to steep specially when there isn't that many reviews out there. Has anyone tried to buy one of the
Aliexpress replacements and switch the gears around?

Yeah, I don't like the look of it though, it seems it was design for millennials that actually think you need 3 hands to play the original controller. The d-pad placement is so weird.

Start with the classics/most known stuff, after some experience you can try to reach less known games, the so called "hidden gems".

Start with some well-known NES titles of different genres.

Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Metroid, for example.

Hey Retro,
I had this game for the C64 that I have been trying to find for ages.
Lil description: This game was like Gauntlet with the top down view of the dungeons, like gauntlet some food was posionous. This was atop player game (maybe more) but I think we swapped out players. This was a floppy disk game, came in its original box and this is some of the key parts to the game...within the game box came a cardboard turndial. At certain parts of the game you would be asked a question and you had to use the turn dial to answer, if not you had to start the game over. The only other thing hat sticks out for this game is that there were these enemies that looked like a starfish, they would spin and they wouldn't kill you but steal your keys. Keys are crucial in this game because you couldn't unlock doors (obv) but if you had them stolen and you couldn't advance you had to start over, and in fact there is one level that is full of keys and you had to use the starfish key stealers to steal a certain amount of keys from you because once you had a certain amount of keys you couldn't carry anymore.
Any help is awesome, you got questions let em rip!
Thanks ahead of time!

I have six games for the Turbografx and Turbo CD altogether. Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, Star Parodier, Ys Book I & II, Detana Twinbee, Bomberman 94, and Soldier Blade. Aside from Detana Twinbee, these games are pretty much the pinnacle of the Turbo VC library from what I have read.

Are there any other great titles for the Turbografx and Turbo CD I need to play?

I know about the Bonk trilogy, but it does not seem to be anything exceptional compared to the likes of NES Mario trilogy, Super Mario World, the Genesis Sonic games, the retro Kirby titles, the DKC trilogy, or Yoshi's Island. Doremi Fantasy seemed to be a more remarkable platformer than Bonk (its really a hidden gem).

I suck at shmups (though I really enjoyed Star Parodier and Soldier Blade), so that possibly writes off significant parts of the Turbo library.

I mean Doremi Fantasy is a more remarkable platformer from Hudson than the Turbo Bonk trilogy.
>>
You should try Blazing Lazers. Very accessible and fun shmup.
>>
>>3957196
You should play Bonk's Revenge, I think that game alone holds up to the other platformers you listed.

You should try Air Zonk as it's not a hard shooter and it's wacky like Star Parodier.

It doesn't work like that. Those pistols only work on CRTs because of their retrace method, not because of the signal (composite/component/whatever).

You're shit outta luck, pal.

However, what's the point of opening doors in Zuul's stairwell? 90% of the time a ghost knocks your team down, but occasionally you open a door and hear something like the car filling up with gas. What does that do?

I never met anyone who didn't like the NES Ghostbusters game until the AVGN came along, same with the first TMNT.

I know Ghostbusters isn't very good, but I still enjoy driving the Ecto-1.

You may play a lot of old games, but do you know what makes them tick? I did a shitload of research over the past 2 years or so, and I've distilled what makes a good game into a few principles. It's always bothered me how judging a game as good or bad tends to boil down to "it's fun; I like it".

Go through this list, see if you can poke a hole in my theory. Shitpost if you want, but I ain't taking that bait.

>Fun = a controlled clusterfuck.

>Good games use and abuse their sense of space.
Example: Picking Tails or Knuckles in S&K, or using the cape in Super Mario World.

>Surprises.
Example: Random loot, randomly generated levels, etc.

>Being able to set up before the challenge is satisfying, especially if you can set up in multiple ways.
Example: Picking a power up before a stage in Mario 3.

>Certain games may be more enjoyable for certain people.
Here's a list of types of intelligence humans have.

- linguistic
- logical-mathematical
- bodily-kinesthetic
- spatial
- musical
- interpersonal (relationship with others)
- intrapersonal (relationship with self)

If you suck at one of those types of intelligence and the game includes it, you probably won't like the game.

>Options.
Example: Being able to select from multiple heads in Dynamite Headdy.

>Makes you think.
Exapmle: Certain parts of MGS1.

>Allows ingenuity; no prescribed methods.
Can't think of a retro game that does this.

>Encourages misinterpretation.

>spending all that time on vague philosophical flapdoodle

If you were that interested in what makes games work, why didn't you learn how to write assembly code?
>>
>>3956440
There's no point in learning to code if the thing you code is shit. Coding isn't a golden ticket to making good software.
>>
>>3956440
Also, what's vague about it? Didn't I give concrete examples?
