Why are old jRPGs so much better? I honestly didn't even like the genre until I discovered NES masterpieces like Dragon Quest 3. I can't put my finger on what exactly makes them so engaging, but I'd guess it's that random battles actually serve a purpose. Removing the need to manage your items and mana over a lengthy dungeon essentially makes battles a boring tedium, whereas, for example DQ1-3 and FF1, they become the main challenge.
I assume there are contemporary rpgs that function in a similar vein, but I've yet to find some.

I agree. What I like about them is that most of the dungeons actually require some effort to find your way through and may even take multiple trips to complete, whereas in most later games you might veer off the path for a second to pick up a chest but are otherwise pretty much walking in a straight line to the end.
>>
I just think the simple sprites are cozy.

Etrian Odyssey. Five games in the series, four in English, 1 and 2 got remakes that have an original mode and a story mode, very good first-person dungeon crawlers.

>less atrocious vehicle levels (at least 40% less), replace those with more platformer levels
>remove those godawful boring underwater levels
>better gems distribution
>harder Medieval levels
>more secrets like Crash 2

There, I fixed it. Also PS1-era Crash Bandicoot thread.

So I just beat the water temple on Oot and in my opinion, the fire temple is much worse. Why does water get the hate?

I agree. I had a harder time figuring out where to go in the fire temple. The water temple was much more straight-forward.

You mean the worst dungeon in OoT , the worst Zelda dungeon in the 3D Zeldas, or the worst Zelda dungeon of all time from any game?
>>
>>3948705
From any of the retro games. I generally dislike the fire temple the most. Probably due to the ridiculous timed run you have to do to grab the megaton hammer.

I've played through the 5th episode and fell in love with the Golden Gate map. That look epic and retro at the same time. It surpassed Derelict (the oil tanker level from E4) as my favourite level of the game. The Egypt one was also cool, loved it for the puzzles and the nonlinear gameplay. What are your favourite levels for the game?

Mine are 1. Golden Gate level, 2. Derelict, 3. Dark Side of the Moon, 4. LA Rumble, 5. Egypt level, 6. The Abyss, 7. The Indiana Jones level from Duke Caribbean, 8. Las Vegas from the DNF Build remake.

The fifth episode as a whole was pretty well done. It looks like something actually from 1998 (if there's a way to express that in the best possible way). Also the Fifth Element etc parodies were fitting.
>>

First level is iconic, rdl in L2 is iconic, abyss is awesome, and I really love flood zone, probably flood zone overall.

Is there an easy way to play episode 5 with Eduke yet?

I've played SotN a LOT through the years. But there's so many weapons I just NEVER got that seem super interesting. But a lot of them are super late game and drop so late, you've already beaten 80% of the game. It seems that early game you get a dagger and a short sword which you use for 50% of the game. Then right at the end you get all these exotic weapons with special attacks. And half the time unless you use them and experiment you won't see these special attacks. So many/most players will either miss the weapon entirely, or get it, see it has half the attack value of the weapon they have, then never use it.

Anyways, list of cool weapons/spells I've never used/gotten:

>Blue knuckles
>Flamberge
> Holbein Dagger
>Muramasa
>Crissaegrim
>Wing Smash
>Sword brothers
>Zweihander (blue venus weeds? what?)
>Yasutsuna katana
>Vorpal blade
>Rune Sword
> Heaven's Sword

Weapons I have gotten:

>Were bane (awesomely broken)
> Fist of Tulkas (hadouken, and flurry fists. Flurry fists does like 500 points of damage)

>It seems that early game you get a dagger and a short sword which you use for 50% of the game.

But you find new shit constantly. Why would you stick with one weapon for most of it? I always buy the elemental swords from the library. At least by the inverted castle you should have tons of weird shit to try out.

Also even if I have to hack in a completed save file first, I now always, always start in the 99 luck, Lapis lazuli mode. It makes the beginning a touch more challenging and finding all those weird weapons a lot faster.

Sword of Dawn roxors my boxors.

Hey /vr/. What do people decorate their CRTs with? My CRT is silver but I don't really like it because it sticks out from my peripheral vision a lot and I was thinking of a way to distract from that.

Besides removing the tabs in the cartridge slot, what modifications do i need to make to a PAL N64 to play NTSC games? I've heard that the system will boot into PAL60 if an NTSC cartridge is inserted but i can't find anything to prove this statement.

Why don't you, like, buy a cheap pal game and test it yourself instead of begging to be spoonfed? There are places on the internet way more suited to a discussion like this than 4chan

Which core Nintendo franchise made the best jump to the gameboy?

is Tetris an acceptable answer?
>>
Zelda.

Super Mario Land controls like shit. Don't even try to deny it. Deep down, you know it does.

Castlevania Adventure is way too slow. It's almost unplayable.

Metroid II is actually pretty fucking good, but not as good as Link's Awakening.

Haven't played the handheld Mega Man.
>>
Zelda of course. Vastly prolific and faithful to the original.

Metroid and Mega Man are decent games that feel like legitimate members of their series but suffer somewhat from the palette and resolution. I would have enjoyed both those games more on NES

Castlevania and Super Mario Land really took a new "fresh" direction that probably suited Super Mario more than Castlevania.

Castlevania Adventure is a brutal game. Hard for even a die-hard Castlevania fan to really enjoy but it did pave the way for Castlevania games to keep seeing mobile versions that ultimately became the home for 2D Castlevania which is nice even though most of them are Igavanias.

I have a Wii which I use for retro gaming. It works while playing through component and composite on both my LCD and CRT TVs, but when I try S Video, it does not work. All I get through s video is a messed up image which won't stop scrolling.

Sounds like you got cheap cables or your TV can't hold onto the sync signal.
>>
>>3962905

The s video doesn't work across multiple TVs. Also, I used multiple cables
>>
Might be an issue with the cable? I use a Gamestahp brand s-video cable with one of my Wiis, was the only cable I could find at the time that only had only s-video and no composite. It works fine, although the goofy faux-snakeskin is stupid and the plugs are all made from a cheap-feeling plastic of similar quality to the service offered in their stores.
