Sure it's not for everyone but there are still plenty of people who like it. I didn't grow up with a 2600 and never even played Atari until about four years ago but it very quickly became one of my favorites. If late 70s/early 80s arcade games aren't your thing then the 2600 isn't going to be either.

Genesis, Neo Geo and Dreamcast have plenty of homebrew games. Why?
It seems that massive nostalgia faggots are obsessed with the "underdog" consoles, even though Genesis wasn't an underdog.
Most of them are latinos or yuropoors that go stuck with those consoles and developed some weird affection to them.

Not quite retro, but Fist of Mars mixes SRPG with reticle aiming and dodging combat for a surprisingly fun mix.

I like X's more memorable music and comic book artstyle for the characters. GX is still amazing, but X is my pick.

Mario 64 isn't a collectathon. The stars are just goalposts; they no different than the flags from SMB.

Classic 2D platformers: tight focused level design, emphasis on difficult platforming, obstacles and threatening enemies.
Collectathon 3D platformers: here's a big area for you to wade through collecting whatevers, "difficulty" is just figuring out where everything is.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as 32x, is in fact, the Mega Drive 32x, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Mega Drive plus 32x. The 32x is not a console unto itself, but rather an add on for a fully functioning Mega Drive.
