that's not nice
It's pretty widely known by now that the reason the game Sonic X-treme never came out was due to Yuji Naka getting wind of the US dev team behind it using the Nights into dreams engine without his consent. That derailed development of the game and eventually it was cancelled. In hindsight, should Sega should've just told Yuji Naka to screw off and accepted his resignation and just let the US team continue on Sonic X-treme? Was Naka even in the right to demand that sort of pull over the engine, or was it Sega's to use as they pleased? Obviously Naka was a valuable employee(perceivably more so than a bunch of american programmers) but his output for Sega beyond Phantasy star Online doesn't seem particularly important, and he probably wasted time and money on a bunch of non-starter franchises that ended up very niche.
I'm sure I enjoyed PSO more than I would have enjoyed Sonic X-Treme
>Naka leaves
>Oshima takes over Sonic Team
>decides to keep the upcoming next gen Sonic game true to the originals as opposed to setting it in a semi-realistic world with RPG/adventure elements (both Naka's idea)
>Sonic's jump into 3D is as successful as Mario's
I'd miss PSO and Burning Rangers though. Those games were awesome.
>>2840201
There was a lot more shit that happened that lead to X-Treme's cancellation than just Naka refusing STI the NiGHTS engine. That said, X-treme didn't look that great anyways.
Honestly looking back this entire scene is pretty offensive.
How exactly? I found it hilarious.
It isn't. Go back to Kotaku.
Not surprising in the least if you look at history of FF character design. Most of them tend to be androgynous. Sexual ambiguity is the core of FF.
I used to have a shit ton of video game ads saved from the 70's 80's and 90's but I lost my folder. Can you help me rebuild, /vr/?

I think OP is referring to the sound it makes when the DC boots and the VMU batteries are either missing or expired.
The OP is too low effort to end up being a worthwhile thread though. Shame.
Anyone else think this beats out SMB 3?

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!
>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.
Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

ITT: stuff that scared you as a kid.
yeah, getting reminded that you are playing a video game and taken out of the immersion is pretty scary.

Star Wars trilogy arcade was nerve wracking as a kid
>You can fail each and every level
>Wampas in your face
Pic related was intense as fuck. The game starts with you shooting tie fighters, then Darth Fucking Vader is trying to strike your ass down in first person view.
>>2810345
I was almost convinced I was a gorilla then out of nowhere comes this game over screen.
How hard is this game?
I remember trying to play it a few years ago and it literally blew me the fuck out.
Do I just suck or what?
In terms of where to go? You just have to pay attention to what people say mostly.
>>2843345
Easy like every Zelda after II.
Maybe you were just having an off day when you tried before
Hey /vr/, I just picked up Final Fantasy I-II Dawn of Souls today. Which one should I start with first? I or II? Which do you think is better?
>>2843172
i think ff1 is objectively better, story and game-play wise. FF2 story is like completely impossible to follow and the combat/leveling system in it is garbage.
The DoS version of FF1 is radically different from the original game. Enemy stats are toned down, items are made cheaper, characters have MP instead of spells-per-level, etc. You're essentially playing the game on cruise control.
As for the story, FF1 is very minimalistic. You're sent out to gather four key items before taking on the final boss, and your characters are just blank slates. The game definitely emphasizes gameplay over plot.
FF2's characters are more developed and have identities and backstories. You can nonetheless develop their skills however you want. FF2's plot follows a consistent series of quests, as assigned to you by Fynn's princess, Hilda. Guest characters constantly join and leave the party under various circumstances as you progress.
FF2's mechanics were considered pretty experimental at the time, because your stats and skills leveled up individually as they were put to use, as opposed to your characters gaining traditional experience levels like in most other FF games. The system is similar to, say, Morrowind. The more you swing a sword, the more likely your strength and sword skill level are going to increase; the more you take damage from attacks, the more likely your HP will increase; and so on.
>>2843172
I suggest going through 1 first, if only because going through 2 first will make going back to the first game feel like a terrible chore.
In some ways I think the DoS version of 1 is among the best because there's absolutely zero need to grind ever and you can blow through it quickly. The setting and story are a little neat, but the gameplay of the first game is extremely boring. No matter your party set up, at least 90% of the actual gameplay is just having everyone in your party attack.
FF2 is very much a love or hate kind of experience. Unlike almost every other JRPG, your actions in battle all matter. >>2843580 describes it well. It makes for a very unusual type of RPG where if you want a powerful mage, you get them by training them in magic constantly, in every fight you're in. Some people love it, others hate it. You'll just have to try for yourself and see.
