Of the two great 2d controllers, do you have any preference for one in some kinds of games and the other for others?

I find the SNES's d-pad is stronger at games with only 4 directions as it snaps to them more precisely, well the Saturn rolls more easily for games that use 8 directions.

Can they be used interchangeably?

No. That's why your thread sucks donkey cock

For serious gaming, the Saturn pad is better in every way.

Both are really great.
I just wish 8bitDo made a wireless saturn pad.
I still like the saturn one more.

>The best rts game to exist.

That doesn't look like Dune II to me.
>>
>>2843551
Didn't dune ii have those annoying questions it asked? Having to find the anwsers to the questions in some little book was a mammoth task for 5 year old. Dune I don't think it was any where near the best rts's but it was definitely one of the eairly games that helped define rts' s was fun to play to.
>>
>>2843562

Copy-protection. Several DOS games enforced it. You can patch it out with tools like Universal Neverlock, or just download it with the copy-protection already patched out. I think MyAbandonware's download of Dune II is already patched.

So for those of you who play your retro games on emulators, do you use save states at all? Do you view them as cheating? I'm super shit at retro games and almost always end up using save states.
137 posts and 13 images submitted.
>>
What I believe:

>If you use an emulator and DO NOT use the emulator features (slow down, speed up, save/load state), its basically the same as beating it on console
>If you use the emulator features, its basically like beating the game with cheats, and your "achievement" of beating it is basically nothing

Thats my feelings on it. Some games are actually more fun on emulator (like Ogre battle: MotBQ) because of speed up. Likewise, save states can be pretty useful in certain games or if you have to go somewhere abruptly.

If you're save scumming your achievement is null and void. But sometimes it can be ok, like if you're popping a save state at a boss door in megaman x3 with full e-tanks, and you have like 10 lives, and you use all your e-tanks in the attempt, loading the save state isn't the worst thing in the world because you can just wait for your e-tanks to fill, like what my friend and I did when we were kids.

Here comes that ban you wanted.

Blue board, anon. Blue board.
>>
>>2840590
Yeah I'll sometimes save state in spots just to make it not tedious, not to make it easier. Like in Punch Out you usually have to beat a few boxers to get back to the boxer you were at before you lost, if it gets repwatetive enough I just save state right at the beginning of the boss, but never something save scummy like in between rounds or at a down or something

What are some JRPGs with interesting choices & consequences and roleplaying?

I'm curious to see what japanese titles got closer to the western counterparts in this sense

Rance series. Tons of choices on who to rape with varying consequences.
>>
>>2837402
Langrisser and Growlanser series are well known because you can really cover the spectrum of alignements, in some of those you can even become the legit bad guy and even kill your former companions if you so desire, which is pretty great. The games are also chock full of choices which not only lead you to different routes and endings but also slightly alter the general route scenario as well.

The SaGa series is one of those games that pioneered the hard gameplay roleplay by letting your characters get stronger according to what commands you use in battle, that is further elaborated in weapon and magic proficiencies, very much like Daggerfall, the more you use a sword the higher your proficiency and damage potential with Swords, in some titles you even get increases to single stats if you use weapons associated with a certain stat, swords and axes make you Strength grow for instance. The more you use a weapon the more special attacks you learn for it, in some titles growing Int and/or magic schools proficiencies is associated with spells visually evolving accordingly and getting different effects like single target fireballs having a side AoE damage subeffect, you even have a chance to learn a technique to evade or counter certain attacks like tail sweeps or even the very techinques your character use.
Romancing SaGa 2 is probably the apex in terms of general roleplaying in that your actions in the story not only get you different quest endings, but also affect the forms of certain story bosses, making them significantly stronger, one classic example is a certain boss whom you could make peace with or fight as you please, but if you decided to kill another boss related to him before meeting him he won't make peace with you and will fight you using his strongest form right away, this is achieved by having a very open, almost sandbox-like world which let's you tackle any quest in any order you like.
>>
>>2837489
Dark Law is a minor title which feaures a neat stat system that tries to simulate real life standards in a way, each time one of your characters is KO'd you permanently lose one Stamina Point, Stamina is very important because it's used to calculate your movement range, status resistance and duration and also a few damage calculations, you might also lose other stats permanently making battles very tense, though later on in the game the difficulty goes down quite a bit.
Regarding quests, some scenarios have multiple endings and depending on your result you might or might not unlock other quests, needless to say that the game ending will also change depending on your general quest playthrough.
Another series was Lunatic Dawn, which heavily borrowed PnP gameplay since its inception, however, the series is also peculiar in which each game plays differently from each other, Lunatic Dawn is kinda like Ultima, Lunatic Dawn II is more like HoMM, Lunatic Dawn III returns to the Ultima formula but adds a completely different world system in which you explore worlds that are generated from in game items, randomly, through your game data or even by using music CDs, all the things in those worlds, including NPC which you can recruit and even marry and have kids with, dungeons and quests are created by elaborating srings of data and adding a few random variables making them always new. During your travels you'll have the chance of finding key items that will lead you to fixed story worlds in which you'll have to make choices which will influence the ending you'll get, which is added to your general behaviour in the game as well, taking a lot of assassination or thieving quests will lead you towards a different path than taking rescue or fetch quests.
Lunatic Dawn Odyssey tries a more traditional Jrpg approach by being entirely menu based but still retains a more western approach to roleplay like its predecessors with multiple endings, free exploration and all that.

Which game is better?? The original Castlevania 2, USA... The redacted version which was translated/redacted.. or the original Japanese version with battery save on the Famicom Disk Sytem???

Not him, but FDS games didn't have battery backup because data was written to the disk itself.

I just recently found my copy of Final Fantasy VII in the attic and want to play it. The first disc is really messed up because I can't even get the first FMV to start. I tried that toothpaste trick that on the disc since I have used before on another CD and it worked. But when I tried it on Final Fantasy VII it didn't work as I hoped it would.

What other solutions or tricks have you people use when fixing old PS1 discs?

you wanna use a fine grit sand paper, something like a p240 to buff out the scratches
>>
>>2849129
dont listen to this guy. what you need is some common toothpaste and steel wool. when your hands are bleeding thats how you know the disc is fixed.
>>
>>2849129
>>2849139
Both of these are perfectly valid choices. The sand paper to wear down the scratches and the toothpaste to polish it out. The steel wool...not so much needed with the combination you'll be using.

Best Sonic music thread I guess? Which is better, Genesis Sonic 3D Blast or Saturn?

Does anyone know where I can get pure instrumental versions of Knuckle's tracks from Sonic Adventure 2? I love the music but the lyrics always make me cringe (inb4 not retro SA2 is on Dreamcast).

Good afternoon /vr/,
I have a Tribes 2 (Tribes Next) server up right now, since it was requested by a few people on the last thread I made (though it's not quite "retro"). And the plan is to cycle retro games servers for days of the weeks (maybe cover the weekend with one game, whatever most popular).

Right now I can host and join:
Any idTech1 game (Hexen, Heretic, Doom, mods, whatever)
Unreal
Tribes 2 (Using Tribes Next patch)
Noone Lives Forever (though I can't seem to find a command line option to connect through IP, and the server list is ded, can connect through hamachi or whatever)
Hexen 2 (through hamachi or what-not - doesn't seem to like connecting through a forwarded port for some reason, still trying to fix this)
Red Faction (using Pure Faction patch)

Open to suggestions. If auto cycling them per day gets too ADD maybe I'll switch to cycling them out per week or just on request.

Before I go through the trouble of finding other games to set up I kinda wanna see how this performs/if there's any demand for this sort of thing. So if anyone has Tribes (2) Next, the server name is VRTHUMPERS. And if you don't have it it's free, so go get it. http://www.tribesnext.com/

Lemme know your ping and location so I have an idea if my connection is suitable. It's just CTF on the default map cycle, 32 players I think...

My server room actually looks a lot less like pic related and a lot more like my living room with an XPS 630 tucked behind my couch.

>If auto cycling them per day gets too ADD maybe I'll switch to cycling them out per week or just on request.

Per week sounds like the best cause it gives everyone a chance to hop in at some point. There's nothing worse than finding out you were like an hour late to play multiplayer in a game you love with people here .
>>

Thanks for the offer. Really just any suggestions or feedback would be helpful. My upload speed is just north of 2MB, so it should be pretty playable for anyone on the west coast, but hopefully suitable to east coasters too. Not sure yet, since this is my first venture into hosting for the most part.

A friend suggested Thievery UT, so I think I'm going to go for that, and maybe host a UT99 server with some of my dads old maps from ~1999/2000 thrown in the mix... Though Speck has a well liked server he posts around on 4chain, so I'd be competing.

>There's nothing worse than finding out you were like an hour late to play multiplayer in a game you love with people here
Fair point. I'll probably do that then, instead. I'd like to throw the necessary files on mediafire or something, but the legality of that is pretty shaky so I might just suggest some places to look and include basic directions to get the games to run (though I think most people on /vr/ could handle it themselves/it's mostly self explanatory)

Should I play this? Does it fix the silly censorship the NES version had? (Pentagrams replaced by triangles, church replaced by clinics). I also heard it doesn't dumb down the gameplay like the GBA version did.

>Nintendo censorship!!
It's even come to /vr/, god dammit
>>
The GBA one is preferable but at the end of the day the games aren't very good. Start with FF3 on the NES
>>
>>2850493
^ this. GBA isn't "dumbed down", they just made the leveling of stats and magic much less tedious, which is a GOOD thing. There's also the added "Soul of Rebirth" story after you beat it. But like the anon above said, at the end of the day they're really not very good. If you only plan on playing it just for the sake of beating it at least once, do the GBA version. Doing the PSX version is just ripping yourself off of many hours of time that could have been spent on a better game.

Hey /vr/, How d you feel about reproductions of NES games that are just way too expensive to by original? I was thinking of doing this for games like pic related because i'd rather pay for the labor involved to re burn an eprom, and that person would likely be a real /vr/ trooper and get the game for substantially less, even though it isn't a very expensive game.

Why not just get a flash cartridge or emulate?
Reproductions are shit and the people behind them scum.

I enjoy having some kind of physical representation of the game with its label also. Seeing it on a list on a menu screen along with a bunch of other roms half heartedly tossed on there because why not sucks the fun out of it for me.
>>

that sounds really autistic

I was at my local game store the other day and saw this game called Rush n' Attack in the NES section and I was wondering if it was any good. I asked the clerk how good it was. He said that the game was okay. I also checked a game review on Youtube and it said the same thing. Now I would like some extra opinions from any of you guys who have played the game before.
