Let's talk about FPS games on consoles and what should have been done about their default control schemes.
Firstly, Outtrigger did it the best.
>turn with the analog triggers with actual acceleration
>walk with D-pad
>freelook with analog stick
>shoot with A
>jump with B
I think FPS games on N64 would have benefited from using L and R to turn even though they are digital. Disregarding the fact that today a pair of analog sticks is what consolefriends use, Arena shooters most definitely benefit from using the Outtrigger default button scheme.

Weird to think there was a point in my life where I got so used to the controls for FPS games on the N64 I actually had a hard time adapting to the dual analog controls on PS1 shooters.
>>2849350
>Firstly, Outtrigger did it the best.
No, Quake 3 Arena on DC did the best.
Analog for looking, ABXY to move and strafe, shoulder buttons to jump and shoot.
That's all you need in an FPS game.
>>2850083
Fur Fighters had the same control scheme on the Dreamcast. I remember it took a while to get used to when I was a kid, but it's definitely the best way to handle it on a controller with one analog stick.
Games you think only you played. Took forever to even remember the name of this one.
Anything from this company. One of their games, called Bloodbath, is so obscure it's not listed anywhere. There's zero information on the internet.
>>2848918
I think I played that. Got it off aol as a free rpg or free game or something. It seemed terrible and I immediately dropped it. Was pissed I spent like three hours of our aol on it.
I know I'm not the only one, but no one ever talks about it. It's monkey Zelda, it got bad ratings because fags don't know shit.
To this day, I find Metal Slug a little unsettling for some reason.
Maybe it's what happens when you burn the enemies alive, I'm not sure, but the game always felt a little dark in a bad way to me.Also I was surprised as hell to learn it came out in 1996. After the PS1 and Saturn, wow. I thought it was much older, like 1993
That's weird, I always found the series lighthearted and humorous.

You gotta remember that this was top tier sprite art when it came out. A lot of Neo Geo games were still being published throughout the 5th gen.
who is in the center, sub zero?
So, /vr, i remember playing some missions of Commandos: Behind enemy lines as a kid and it was very fun and but too heavy for me at the time. Now i feel like giving the series another chance, but C1 is now too low-res for my screen with fan patches dont seem to work properly, C2 has absolutely shitty controls and really unneeded features like inventory and map rotation and i never touched C3 but reember press shitting all over it. Should i even bother with the C3 now, or just stick to good ol'Desperados for my tactical puzzle? Also, i would like some recommendations on games like Commandos and Desperados series (though i feel like they may be are one of a kind in a genre).
there's also robin hood and chicago 1930
Had Commandos 1, really cool game.
Shame they felt the need to keep adding things to it.
Moment I saw an ad for 2 that talked about the 3D map aspect I was turned off immediately.
Anyway the maps looked gorgeous, loved the art and loved the layouts. BTW which game is the OP pic from, can't be from 1 IIRC
>>2848418
>robin hood
Heard it was good, but the setting is not quite my cup of tea.
>Chicago 1930
Heard it was awesome, but never ever saw it in the retail, even when it was brand new, also dont know anybody who played it or even saw it on the shelves. Guess my town just got unlucky. How is it? And were there some Commandos-like games not made by Spellbound, aside from Korea: Forgotten conflict?
There's a copy for sale at a local pawn shop. I've heard a lot of people really like this game and while I do like early Genesis style graphics & sound, the game looks kinda boring. The attacks are auto aim and there isn't much platforming so as far as I can tell, the whole game is "take a few steps, stop to press attack, take a few more steps, stop to press attack" Is there something I'm missing from just watching it? Why does this game get so much love and is it worth picking up?
here's a video link if you don't know what I mean...

It would take you not even two minutes to download an emulator and the ROM to figure out if you enjoy the game or not.
>>2848389
I don't have a game pad for my computer.
which home version of DOA1 was better?
also retro 3D fighter thread, cuz why not.
slightly off topic sry but damn, there's another cover for the "based Saturn cover art compendium" dayum
>>2848319
yeah if Im being honest Im kind of leaning to saturn just cuz that looks damn nice.
Saturn version is a port of the original Model 2 game, a damn good one.
The PS1 version is different, kinda DoA 1.5, it has different outfits, backgrounds and 3D models. The 3D models are good but the backgrounds suck compared to the Saturn version.
What's your favorite pure ANSI game, /vr/?
Hard mode: No roguelikes.
ZZT
pac-man clone
Castle.
To this day. I'm still, at best, 400 points off from a perfect game. I refuse to look up what to do. I wanna figger it out on my own.
Also, I used to like Sam Spade back in le day.
You guys play KOF? It's really underrated compared to street fighter and mortal kombat
Holy shit, do you know where you are right now?
>underrated

It's his firs thread on /vr/, just give him a cookie and let it go.
>>2848168
Yeah it's actually my first thread and I have been waiting for a response for a long time I just wanna talk about the game ;-;
I started playing Final Fantasy VII once but I couldn't get into the combat system. I'm thinking about playing it now, but if I still don't like it I'm wondering if it's worth cheating my way through to see the story. Is it good enough for that?
If you don't enjoy the game then go play something else.
>>2847624
Well, it is a classic, so I want to know if I should play it just to have experienced it. On the PS4 port I understand that you can refill your heath whenever you want. I want to know if the story is worth playing through like that.
>>2847623
The gameplay is better than the story. Also you can just google the plot which will be more understandable.
What is it with emulation that made it go increasingly complex as the time went on?
I remember downloading zsnes and playing roms in 1998.
Now to get an emulator with all those fancy crt and scanline effects to work you have to look through almost 100 blogs and follow a trail of breadcrumbs to get some monstrosity that barely works.
>>2847471
Retroarch comes with a lot of shaders already, wtf are you talkin about?
>>2847471
Expecting hand feeding from what amounts to a free program that came from a shit ton amounts of hard work? Emulators were complex from the beginning. No one is forcing you to use them.
>>2847482
>Expecting hand feeding from what amounts to a free program that came from a shit ton amounts of hard work?
Morality is an illusion
t. master fedora tipper
Ultima Underworld, a game that is older than Wolfenstein 3D, had every game mechanic any later first person action RPG ever had, in some embryonic but distinct form.
PROVE ME WRONG
What's so controversial about that?
Most people acknowledge that UW was years ahead of its time.
It's crazy that they included things like hearing range that served no practical purpose in the game.
>>2847129
Yeah OK but, actually I should rephrase my OP, the thing is there don't seem to have been any real fundamental game mechanic innovations in the genre since this game.
I mean, are people really sufficiently aware of this? It really doesn't reflect very well on game developers, does it? Why is it so hard to introduce real fundamental innovations to this genre? Why does it seem like reviewers constantly talk about games as if they do so anyways?
I guess that's sort of what I want to discuss.
>>2847139
I guess because gaming as a medium is iterative, so there's only so many truely innovative ideas that break the mold, so most games take mechanics that exist and try to either improve them, or expand them
Well?
Make it a sword, if you make it a stone you don't get to use it.
>>2847069
Sword, then bet it at the Coliseum for Illumina, duh. Turn the Cursed Shield into the Paladin Shield and it'll teach you Ultima. The magicite is bait.
The Advance version doesn't have this problem. :^)
JUST FUCK MY LIFE UP

How did they make a game this good in 1992? Were they time travellors themselves?
>good
nice meme reddit!

Not as good as Smash Bros Melee.
