Well yeah you'll see a lot of blacks/arabs and the city has a reputation for crimes but it's like pretty much everywhere just don't go in the bad parts and be smart. Do you speak French ?
As for the things to see in Marseille, the port, the old town, the cathedral and the basilica, eating the famous "bouillabaisse" (sort of fish soup), and other stuff but I've been there once only
Then you have the whole Provence region around which you should 100% check out. There's the Calanques national park, the endless lavender fields, the "sentier des ocres", the wetlands of the Camargue, the cities of Aix-en-Provence, but mostly the line Arles/Avignon/Orange (tons of Roman and medieval things in each), the impressive canyon of the Verdon (pic related)...

Can /trv/ recommend me some fun stuff to do in Budapest?

I just watched Rick Steves' episode on Budapest and it looks like a beautiful city with amazing buildings, but I was really only interested in two things; the House of Terror museum and statue park.

What else is there to do in Budapest? I'm 24 years old and I will travel there with my girlfriend during July. She is not interested in nightlife stuff such as clubbing or drinking at all.

Maybe we should go somewhere else?

Maybe throw in Prague and Krakow? I am 26 and my wife and myself just visited Prague and Krakow for a week, it was the perfect amount of time for those two cities, we wanted to get to budapest however time constraints would not allow. I am pretty sure I saw a train in the station that went from Krakow>Prague>Budapest. Even if it didnt I am sure it would be simple to organize.

>I should mention neither of us are into the Clubbing/bar scene either, mostly just old shit
>>
i should save my bp recommendations once.

to do list if you end up going:
go to a spa (széchenyi is the biggest, veli bej is the coziest)
get rose-shaped ice cream at basilica
lunch at a market hall (any market hall except the main market hall, which would be a full-on tourist trap if it wasn't for the nice architecture. hold utcai market hall maybe?)
it's just a social place in general, so even during the day you'll find plenty of nice cafés, tea houses, you name it, places where you don't have to consume alcohol. oh and in july they will all have places to sit outside.
depending on what you find fun.... for me the caves (and the old cave hospital) is also kind of fun during summer, nice places to cool down.
>>

Thanks, we are actually already planning on visiting Prague and Krakow.

Now we are thinking about maybe Vienna or Bratislava.

Yes, yes it is. Do you have everything in order already? Degree? Job offer? Some starting money so you don't die poor in the first few weeks there? Know at least a little Spanish?

Good luck m8. The only thing worse than not having a job is having a job but everything is better than the neet life.

I plan on spending some time enjoying the argentine country side and getting a better grip on spanish in general (which I have a rudimentary understanding of from 4 years in high school) I'm still trying to decide a price point outside of plane tickets and basic daily expenses for food, shelter etc. I'm already getting travel insurance to help make me more eligigble to work on a farm and I'm leaving in july which I think may be a less popular time of year for WWOOF so I can get a better pick of farms. Outside of this I plan to spend a month and was wondering if it would be a good idea to rent a bike or automobile and what are some of the best areas to check out in between farms.

I have no particular aversion to hard work and have been working in restaurants for years now so I should be able to handle relatively any work load.

So me and GF (both late 20s Americans) have been talking about doing an Australian WHV sometime this year, when I start reading shit like this:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-05-12/budget-working-holiday-visa/6464972
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-05-14/backpacker-tax-grab-hurts-rural-towns-and-farmers/6469910
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-05-15/backpackers-worried-about-working-holiday-visa-tax-change/6472118

TL,DR: visa holders are about to get fucked by getting taxed at 30+% and this has us reconsidering our options.
Straya had us thinking we'd be making bank (relatively speaking), but looks like that isn't the case anymore. Now New Zealand is starting to look like the better option for a WHV, with AU as a side trip at best.

You got fucked when you were given that fake 50c coin
>>
>>1072288
It's not fake. Pictured is a 1966 50cent piece, which was the first year decimal currency was issued. The 1966 50cent piece is 80% silver, and has an actual silver weight of 1/3 of a troy ounce. At current spot price that makes this particular coin worth 6-7AUD.

tl;dr OP did not get ripped off.

You just fucking go, faggot.

Save just enough money for the flight and a couple weeks of food and a roof. You'll figure that shit out when you're there.

Don't be like the Germans with waiting to have kids; Waiting until they're 40 and out of 3 different universities with a "stable job" to finally decide now is the right time, only then to realize your newborn child is now autistic because of your gnarly ass old man sperm.

Anyway, I was wondering what opportunities are there for Brits. I have a Bachelor's degree, and currently work in Banking. I don't have much experience with regards to travelling, but as a country Argentina has always appealed to me.

Hello everybody, I've been thinking for a while now about walking the Route of Santiago de Compostela from my city, Toulouse.
I've never done anything that challenging, I'm only 19 y.o, but I am in good physical shape, love walking, and even speak enough Spanish.
So I'd like to know if anyone here has already done it, and to ask for any advice concerning...well pretty much everything. Which season would be best, should I book rooms for the nights between my walks or is it possible to camp most of the time, what kind of equipment I'd need...
Also I'll add even if it looks easy on a map I know walking more than 1000km isn't a piece of cake, I'm not thinking about it like I think about a casual hiking day. So yeah I'm inexperienced and as such i'll take any advice but I'm not blind to the risks.
It's not even a religious thing btw I've just been thinking about a long trip like this by myself for a while and this looks perfect (History, I can start from my home, landscapes seem interesting, and I've never been in those parts of Spain)
Thanks, I'll check the thread regularly

Hi there, personally I haven't done it myself.

That said I know there's a lot of different accomodation along the way, camping at a site with showers is about 8-10€ a night, where hostels and bunkbeds are likely to be around 15-20€ per night.

Sleeping in the woods are great from late april throughout summer, you would just need a sleeping bag that can dry quickly, then if it rain a little or there is a heavy dew you just dry it in the sun around noon.

Travelling outdoors in France and Spain is nice from the end of april until late october in my oppinion. For this season a tent is unnecessary unless you like the privacy.
>>

Thanks for the answer
I was thinking about maybe leaving in May, in order to be right between the chills of the end of winter and before the heat of summer. Also spring is beautiful so...
I'll look for informations concerning shelter in the Pyrenees, I want to be outside as much as possible but need to know more about the crossing of the Pyrenees (Nights are cold in the mountains and I'm still unexperienced)
I'm still undecided concerning bringing a tent or not, it sounds reasonnable in case I'm caught in heavy rains one night but we'll see. I still have a lot to decide anyway
>>
>>1066476
Yes, the thing with a tent is that you'll need to carry it around for the day where you need it.

Unless you can afford to invest a lightweight one it's really a lot of weight in your backpack, for no to little use.

When walking far distances I've heard that 12kg of backpacking equipment is the most comfortable.

I really wanted to see it on Easter of this year, but was wondering what the cheapest flights were. Google is saying everything is $2,500, but I can't see spending that much just to stay for 2 or 3 days tops to see the celebrations.

Is there a snowball's chance in hell that I'll be able to catch a standby?

>>
>>1073055
Bumping, I figured a lot of you guys would be in Ireland or Northern Ireland to see the Easter Rising centenary. I expect most will fly into Dublin, so going to Belfast might increase my chances of flying standby.
>>
>>1073055
Did you read the sticky? There's some info in there about sites for finding affordable flights.

Also look at Iceland's airline, last I looked 5hey were pretty reasonable and they'll give you a day layover in Reykjavik if you want to add a day in Iceland to your trip.
>>
Going to Northern Ireland are ye?

Unlucky, I'd rather skin my own bollocks. None the less, don't pay that. It's extortionately expensive.

I will be carrying a large amount of Euro notes in Turkey (under the 10k declarable limit).

Since I have a Scottevest Expedition jacket with plenty of pockets, is there any reason to use a money belt?

I don't think the jacket would be any less secure, and if I use a money belt it may look like I have something to hide. I'm flying business class for what it's worth.
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1072809
the real risk would simply be the money falling out and you loosing it

money belts are discreet, but professional thieves know to look for them (that being said they are a minority)

depending where you are it may or may not be likely you will get robbed, you might be more at risk of being detained by security because you're carrying cash unusually

if the money is just in your bag it's much less likely that if it's on your person because of screening

you would have to take your money belt off to pass security, which is a hassle, but that's how I do it. if it's in your jacket they will probably take the cash out when you pass security, showing the whole world it's there

however when I was in a really bad part of the world I carried cash like a drug mule, by wrapping it inside my inner thigh in glad wrap and tape, or inside my underwear.

one thing I can say for sure though is that if you're bringing cash you ought to wrap it in a zip lock bag with tape and the amount written on it, so if security takes it out they know you will notice if a note "goes missing", turkish security are some of the most corrupt I've ever dealt with
>>
Gonna be in India this summer. Any tips on how not to be pickpocketed? Is a wallet chain effective or does it just draw attention to where your wallet is?
>>
>>1073376
Just keep a regular wallet with not a lot of cash in it so if they take it you won't lose much. I don't know about you guys but when I wear pants and a shirt I don't tuck the shirt into the pants so it actually hangs over the pockets. Makes it a lot more difficult to both see if there's anything in them and put your hand in there.

If you're taking night trains or buses just wear a money belt under your clothes so that if someone tries to jack your shit they won't get to the money. I would also take a lightweight bike lock to lock your backpack when you sleep.

Hi /trv, gonna go on holiday with some friends this summer and I'm looking for the best party places, preferrably in Europe. (I live in Belgium so going further would cost more)

Looking for a crazy nightlife but not completly fucked up by rude Brits like Magaluf. Also looking for a nice beach, good weather and not too expensive.

So far I've considered: Ibiza (which is overrated and way too expensive from what I've heard), Sunny Beach, Zrce Beach (pic related), Bodrum,.. All the 'known' party places.

Any advice? Thanks in advance

I went to Heraklion a few years ago and it was nice city. Drink a ton but mostly at cafes and bars. Someone told me while we there that it's a known for its nightlife along the beaches, I guess in Hersonissos and Malia, which are nearby the city. I was there in January though, so it wasn't peak season.
>>
If you go to Ibiza it'll literally just be Chav central, those fuckers ruined the island.

Prague and Berlin are fucking amazing for Techno, but no beaches.

Riga has dope beaches, but I'm unsure of the beach nightlife (the clubs are super sick as well)

Croatia is just the cream of the motherfucking crop for beach parties, but may be far and expensive.

Hey folks,

I've got 7 days off (sort of outta the blue), and I'm gonna buy a plane ticket and head to Costa Rica in like 72 hours. I'm a little rusty, but I was once an expat and backpacker for a couple of years, and I'm fairly certain that I can wing this in a way that ends up successfully, but I'd love some solid tips.

I've done little research outside of calling a friend who has been there and availing myself of Google for the past 2hrs, but the following seems worthwhile from what I've read:

- Monteverde (zip line, night hike)
- Baldi hot springs (and rafting)
- Puerto Viejo (and day trip Cahuita nat’l park)
- Manuel Antonio Nat’l Park (night tour here?)
- Tortuguero (I like turtles)

I'm 30/M, traveling alone, and down for whatever (but I'm fresh out of contact lenses so SCUBA/snorkel are not going to be enjoyable). My Espanol is abysmal (it will be a little better after brushing up on the flight), but I don't want to sit around in resorts.

Whatcha think?
