Shamelessly ripped off from this.

>"After the war was America's golden age, when peace and prosperity reigned supreme and the might of the US was unchallenged. Alll was not well however. In the shadows, dark things plotted and schemed. The war came and all our nightmares were unchained. After the bombs, dark and hideous things were free to finally show themselves. "

Basically Fallout with Ray Bradbury, The Twilight Zone, Wicker Man, The Fog, EC Comics, The Blair Witch Project, and campfire stories mixed in to all the pulp and post-apocalyptic weirdness.

So I'm pretty new to mtg, but I really like playing. I play with a black/blue deck, and really enjoy it, but I was wondering...

What's the best color/color combo, and why?

>inb4 Eldrazi

this question is very difficult to answer

basically, anything goes in casual play. you don't need to worry about the best color combo.

In competitive formats the best colors vary. In legacy, blue is uncontested, but can't really stand alone so the most common decks are blue/black or blue/white, and most often splash a 3rd color like red or green.

In modern, it's the same story, black is basically the best color but it can't stand alone so it's most commonly paired with green. Blue and white are generally considered the worst colors in modern but they're fine as splash colors.

In standard, who cares lol

if you've no interest in the competitive side of mtg, literally whatever works, just have fun.

I'm trying to learn as much about the game as possible, and make a really cool deck. Ive made a list of cards I wanna buy to help me out, with planeswalkers, and a few ledgendary creatures

There's a local game store that I want to play at with some regularity, but I dont wanna go in with a shitty deck. Also, my friend has an Eldrazi deck with endless one, Emrakul, Ulamog (ceaseless hunger and infinite gyre) and a kozilik. Ive beat him and his brother (red deck with 2 Chandra), but I always lose when 1 on 1

Casual magic is pretty much incomparable to any sort of sanctioned event, so don't take your experience with your playgroup into consideration. You can either build your own deck, knowing that it's 100% garbage and intend on building into something useful or look up a cheap list online (G/R pummeler has the best value to power ratio of any budget deck). Here's a few mistakes that I notice that new players make.

>putting bad cards in your deck
It's probably a good idea to ask an experienced standard player whether or not a card in your deck is bad. Card evaluation is a learned skill, but a good rule of thumb is to ask yourself "Would I like to draw this off the top of my deck if I'm losing the game?" If not, then you need a very good reason to include it.

>playing too many expensive spells
In a 24 land deck, having 5 lands by turn 5 is seriously unlikely. Good deck's are built on cheap spells, and you really shouldn't include many 3, 4, or 5 drops in your deck.

>playing x's monuments
I don't know why every new player plays one of the shitty Amonkhet monuments, but just don't. None of them are playable.

>caring about budget
It's sad, but there's no way to avoid spending money if you want to have a record better than 0-4. You don't have the collection to build decks off the cards that you own, so don't try. People give away shitty draft chaff for a reason.

Also, be wary of bad advice. Most standard players are shit at magic.

Literally just walk away slowly and fire. He has no ranged weapons and no psychic powers, it doesn't matter how nasty that ax is if he can't physically reach you with it. Sooner or later he'll fail enough armor saves.

I really want to runa campaign where players are not only different races and classes, but different levels. Kind of like in LotR, where there's one level 10 cleric, a couple 5th level fighters, and a few 1st level rogues.

Has anyone done anything like this? Is there any advice that you have for running a campaign like that? How do
would you imagine class makeup affecting it?

I can't quite remember the cards that would go with this, but I think "Nest of Scarabs" was one of them, and I think that this could lead to an infinite draw engine in Grixis colors.

EDH of course,as the cards you'd need to set this up wouldn't be all that great in a Standard/Eternal format deck.

What are your favorite podcasts and why /tg/? I like Role Playing Public Radio, they have a lot of good stuff from the past several years. But I want to branch out into something new, and actual play podcast that is comfy but without autism. Scifi or fantasy, doesn't matter.

like, /tg/ related? or just, in general? I listen to like 40 podcasts, but only like 4 or 5 are /tg/ related

I just like RPGs mainly (though I am interested into getting into 40k, I just don't know where to start), but the only roleplaying podcast that's really stuck to me is Monster in my Podcast, they go through, I think, the AD&D2e Monster Manual, monster by monster, 2 or 3 times a week. Short episodes, 5-10 mins each, they often sidetrack if the monster is really shitty.

I liked Critical Hit for a long while, but they subbed some people out around episode 300 and the people they got in were really boring and also had terrible audio quality. I really liked the Yogscast's old podcasts where they play D&D, but that was more the jokes than the game - that said, they started doing it again with a new DM and some new players and it's really great, though they aren't podcasts, just a video series.

I've also tried the Achievement Hunter one Heroes & Halfwits, I liked the cast but it just didn't grab me, also they swapped out players every week which was weird.

As far as general fantasy goes, I really love the Radio Westeros podcasts, where they look at individual characters and plotlines from the ASoIaF novels.

I would love to find a quality game of Cyberpunk 2020 out there, but it seems to have nothing
>>
>>53845534

I meant just /tg/, though now that I think about it I might listen to a Batman podcast too.

Thanks for your list, always good to have something new to try.

Gritty gothic campaign set in a Greek Bronze Age inspired society. We're all a bunch of scrubs trying to earn the favor of the gods and other patrons by slaying monsters and men.

Last game I got drunk and bedded a woman. Now I'm trying to track her down because her kiss left a parasite that ate half my tongue before the others ripped it out. According to the party scholar, she was probably a Synomeer, basically the settings Vampires. Apparently they all have these parasites inside their mouths and to make another of themselves they rape your mouth and leave a baby.

So yeah. Oh, I'm also unable to speak now. I can scream and shit, but elegant conversation is a no.

High level Anima campaign. Matthew Gaul, aka Magical Trump, has razed their favorite hangout, Lennard(in Not!Switzerland), in a warning against the prince to not interfere in his war to make the Empire great again.
Players are now fighting border skirmishes against Gaul's troops, giving Imperial tacticians time to formulate a battle plan for the big battle that's inevitably going to happen.
The players are also 3/5 of the way through breaking a series of scrolls they believe are the key to summoning a dragon that will herald the apocalypse.
What they don't know is that the scrolls are the only things keeping the Antichrist locked up, and that the dude who sent them on this errand is either Space Hitler or his former subordinate, Millennium. The fourth scroll being broken will provoke an attack by an angel, when they're used to demons showing up.
And a certain crow-controlling demon will contact them and ask "dudes, wtf are you doing?" Aforementioned super dragon is currently crashing at said demon's pad.
Cue panic.

When people talk about stats, why is it that midsling stats are always deemed to only be appropriate for ""grim" "gritty" "realistic"" campaigns, with all three of those words always used in the same order?

You know why I like "low stat" campaigns? It's because they're GROUNDED. Lord of the Rings wasn't grim, or gritty, and many parts weren't even especially realistic, but most of the main characters were grounded, and that's what made it work. Why is it so bad that I want that for my campaign?

The average Ability Score (in D&D obv) is a 10. If you have a 14 in an ability score you're already 1 standard deviation beyond the general population. Why the fuck do you need ALL OF YOUR FUCKING STATS to be higher than that? Point buy is for babies that can't handle not being the most specialist person in the whole wide world.

on a slightly less venomous note, I think that most of the problems with having low starting stats would be alleviated by making it easier to increase stats as you level. Thoughts?
56 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Most editions of D&D people are familiar with operate on the function of a certain base-starting statline, usually at least 16 if not 18 in your primary stat. A 10, or even 14, is just not enough
>>
>>53843235
Point buy reflects the baseline around which the game is balanced (at least as far as D&D is balanced). Going for an average of 10 results in underpowered or nonfunctional PCs in 3rd edition and beyond -- and since low stats hurt martials more than casters, exacerbate already existing balance issues.

I do agree that it's gotten out of hand though.
>>
>>53843235

You're talking in terms of RP and campaign tone but the players you're talking about don't really care about those things except in the most superficial ways. What they do care about are optimizing mechanically and/or their own power fantasies.

Are there any two Chapters that work closely together on a regular basis? To the point where they are almost always working together.

I'm sure it's not an original idea but I kind of like the idea of two highly specialized chapters working side by side.
13 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>53842139

No, because the entire point of the chapters being divided up was so they could go solo. There are a couple chapters who always work with the Inquisition, Sisters of Battle, IG, etc, and most Ultramarine successors work with one another at least once in a while, and Imperial Fists always gather for the Feast of Blades tournament, but only Chaos has near-permanent allies.

I'm looking for some inspiration for a Silent Hill inspired horror campaign. For those unfamiliar with the franchise, I'd characterize it as moody pshycological horror with a sort of dreamy atmosphere. Lots of strange inhuman creatures wandering the fog just out of sight, a focus on gradually building tension, and an undercurrent of mysterious occultism.

What are some interesting ideas for setting key players on edge and tasks/puzzles I could give them to build on that atmosphere? Additionally, what is a good way of handling questline resolution in a way that maintains the mystique and doesn't just dump answers on them, but still provides a satisfying resolution?
