I've read Eaters of tye Dead which is a fake Ibn Fadlan story. Is the real one interesting at all?

I wouldn't say "in between", they're just something different. Though of slavs, scandis/germanics and finns they're probably closer genetically to the former.

It's not exactly a thrilling story, but it's a description of 10th century turks, bulgars and rus (still norse at that point) by an arabic scholar/priest. It describes their cultures, some of their traditions, the way they live. Him being from the Golden Age of Islam, it naturally involves quite a bit of scoffing, but he still describes everything faithfully. Among traditions, there's a description of a quite elaborate Viking burial ceremony.
It also describes the way caravans worked back in the day and how people crossed rivers.
Also, it has this kinda funny (to me at least) sequence when Ibn Fadlan is surprised Volga's colder northern (compared to his) climate and in which he describes storm clouds as two grand hosts of jinn fighting in the sky

I wouldn't say "in between" either, but would say that they are a bit closer to Slavs in terms of genes. Estonians speak a Finno-Ugric language, but Lithuanians and Latvians speak a Indo-European one (and apparently the closest to proto Indo-European if my memory serves me correctly)
