How does your setting handle Red Light Districts? Are there any renowned prostitutes like Phryne, Cora Pearl, or Catherine Walters?

can anyone post some RPGs about living through a dying world rather than saving it? Something with a melanchonic tone.

I understand Ryuutama can be played that way

Apocalypse world generally runs that way. Things are not getting better, the players are not really supposed to change it, just make it through and meet their own needs.

Also, the World of Darkness games can, and most should, be run that way.

Otherwise it's rare as a default setting assumption, because there's no escapism if you want to just survive without a real hope of victory, and escapism is such a huge motivation behind tabletop gaming.

So, what you trying to make?

Would you pay 3BB to make your opponent discard 3 cards?

>>
>>53974362

yes depending on the scenario. This card is good because you can manipulate it in your favor with good timing.
>>
>>53974362
Conbustiable Gearhulk, with its card disadvantage or damage effect, is very similar to this card and came attached to a substantial body. It saw little to no play. I can't imagine this will either.
>>
Cards that give your opponent a choice are always terrible and this no exception. Your opponent gets 3 choice and will always pay with the resource they care the least about and between the choice of 3 life/permanents/cards in hand its to much.

The flavor text isn't really bad in and of itself, it's just bland and flavorless due to being pure exposition. It would be like getting a new Bolas card with
>Nicol Bolas is the last surviving elder dragon from Dominaria, and one of the oldest planeswalkers to ever exist. He manipulates planes across the multiverse to his own ends.
It's just descriptive, which is boring. Not bad, just boring.

I'd had an idea for a game:

>A group of wayward Wanderers (the PCs) find themselves invited aboard the last train bound westward by the engineer (the DM) in the hopes of finding some last bastion of civilization out there at the end of the tracks.

>As they stop here and there along the way, the Engineer asks the Wanderers to leave the train in search of food or water or supplies, to investigate the area or try and find any new Passangers (NPCs) who might want to join them.

>There's no turning back once they've set out on their journey, not that there's much to turn back for as they make their way across the depopulated vastness of the countryside, moving ever onward toward that dreamlike goal.

Would this idea work? If so, what sorts of tasks would the DM Engineer give the PC Wanderers? What would they find along the way? What NPC Passengers would they pick up? What would they find at the end of the line?
149 posts and 40 images submitted.
>>
I like the concept. I could see each session having a really nice structure if you had enough time to work it out.
>Some time on the train to talk with the other PCs and NPCs on the train
>Given a new mission by the Engineer when the train stops
>Go through a self contained map of the area searching for supplies and potential survivors
>Probably need to make it back to the train before it's forced to leave without them

My one question is, what is the main threat in this setting?
>>
Stop fucking railroading me, DM

It is 2,234 years since the Battle of Lake Trasimene, a major clash in the Second Punic War. The Carthaginians under Hannibal defeated the Romans under the consul Gaius Flaminius. Hannibal’s victory over the Roman army at Lake Trasimene remains, in terms of the number of men involved, the largest ambush in military history. In the prelude to the battle, Hannibal also achieved the earliest known example of a strategic turning movement.

Roman troops marched eastward along the road running near the northern edge of the lake. Eager for battle, Flaminius pushed his men hard and hurried up the column in the rear. Hannibal then sent a small skirmish force to draw the vanguard away from the front of the line, in order to split the Roman forces. Once all the Romans had at last marched through the foggy, narrow defile and entered the plains skirting the lake, trumpets were blown, signalling the general attack.

The Carthaginian cavalry and infantry swept down from their concealed positions in the surrounding hills, blocked the road and engaged the unsuspecting Romans from three sides. Surprised and outmanoeuvred, the Romans did not have time to draw up in battle array, and were forced to fight a desperate hand-to-hand battle in open order. The Romans were quickly split into three parts. The westernmost was attacked by the Carthaginian cavalry and forced into the lake, leaving the other two groups with no way to retreat. The centre, including Flaminius, stood its ground, but was cut down by Hannibal's Gauls after three hours of heavy combat.

In less than four hours, most of the Roman troops were killed. The Roman advance guard saw little combat and, once the disaster to their rear became obvious, fought their way through the skirmishers and out of the forest.

Let's talk taxonomy!

Who was the first sapient?
Where is the missing link between Elf and Dwarf?
Does your Orc have a pedigree?
293 posts and 76 images submitted.
>>
I'll share my autism.

The first sapients were random aberrations, who were eventually conquered by the titans, who degenerated to Giants. The common link between Elves and Dwarves were called the Eldar. I hadn't statted them but Duergar and Drow are actually closer to the Eldar and not under any sort of curse in my world. Humans are relative latecomers, but are the only species to evolve sentience (the others were brought about by magic, technology, or spontaneously came into being in dark places in the world)

Dragons are the newest race, they were servants of the Humans (who were the first people to develop Divine magic and had the first multicultural empire when their clerics and dragon allies ran roughshod over everyone). Although true dragons are extinct, Draconic is the common language, humans worship dragon gods, etc.
>>
>>53843094
Presumably, they would share a common ancestor. The ur-sapient would likely have a mixture of traits of the separate species in that clade. Speciation would occur by populations becoming isolated, and selective pressure encouraging different specialization.

So this means that the original would probably look most similar to modern humans, though it would not likely be identical.

It would also explain why half-elves, half-orcs, and half-dwarves might be possible, but not necessarily elves having children with dwarves.

This would make all of the fantasy races merely subclades of the general human clade. Extreme isolation and long time scales would be necessary: human populations in the New World had no gene exchange with old world populations for around 12,000 years, and speciation did not occur.

Time scales on the order of ~100,000 years or more might be necessary, and even then the over hundred thousand years of isolation did not prevent neanderthals and early modern humans from producing viable offspring.

Or you could just have magic involved somehow. Usually makes the setting building easier

That question is really too broad to be able to properly address it. What kind of play experience do you have? I assume from your pic that you're gonna be running 1st edition AD&D. Which rules will you be ignoring?
>>
Have a few names for NPCs ready just in case someone asks who they're talking to.

Play your "script" modularly. If you plan for the players to learn that there's a party being held by the local lord, it doesn't matter who tells them; they don't have to hear it from the "right" person.

Generally, say yes to players, except if they ask to break the rules or if they are simply asking for power. It's like in improv acting; the rule of thumb is not to say "no" to what happens.
