At least lizards in their final form had been a thing for a lot longer and were built upon even older fluff.

Mercs would have been best, but even then having an army made up of Ogres from all over the world would have been pretty cool rather than mongolians.

Also fuck Gnoblars. New goblin tribe would be fine but those kinda mushy dumb looking things, disgrace to the greenskin race.

They're not a horrible army, and I enjoyed their fluff and look. It's just weird to try and explain how some tribes from the Mountains of Mourn are going to travel all over the world, or other people are going to come to them, especially when most world-travelling Ogres are set up as being individuals or small groups.

If GW had been willing to risk having a few tribes settle outside the Mountains of Mourn, maybe in the World's Edge Mountains or even the Grey Mountains or the mountains in Lustria and Naggaroth, it would've made them more flexible in terms of fighting around the world as a whole force.

When you're shitty enough in the fluff and in the rules to make Bretonnian peasants look useful and standard Goblins look alright, then you have a problem. I feel like the only reason they were included fluffwise is because having a slave race makes it easy to keep their society working without going into details, and no one wants to imagine an Ogre housewife. Ruleswise they're just a cheap tarpit for an army that otherwise does not rely on numbers.
>>
>>53966306
Everything Nurgle is basically female since you give birth to Nurglings without feeling it nonstop.
All we have from continuity though is a witch somehow having sex with a Great Unclean One and surviving and a champion bragging about thicc Nurggirls to Vlad. Both sadly from End Times.

I wish some secondary company would make a female Plaguebearer though.

I personally like hobgoblins better than gnoblars.
>>
>>53968400
Hobgoblins are cool, agreed.
>>
>>53968400
My problem with Hobgoblins is as a greenskin player I can use Gnoblar minis. Any player can use Ogres for unit filler, which includes Gnoblars.

Hobgoblins are made so canonically they can only be used by Chaos Dwarf players. To everyone else, they are useless.
>>
Is there a single evil race in Warhammer Fantasy that doesn't have slaves?
>>
>>53969090
But technically there is no real difference between a Hobgoblin and a Goblin, at least not anything meaningful enough to affect a miniature. And don't forget there are a bunch of independent Hobgoblin Khans in the lore, some of which I believe have become mercenaries or the source of Wolf Rider forces.

I can understand that you can use Gnoblars as unit filler and why you would for Ogres, but I don't get why you would use Gnoblars. At best they provide some kitbashing opportunities for regular Goblins.
>>
>>53969432
No.

As far as nonevil races go, only High and Wood Elves don't. Empire uses Giants as slaves, Bretonnian economics is indentured servitude, Dwarfs use greenskins as labor and test subjects/mine canaries, and Lizardmen lobotomize Norscans for labor.
>>
>>53969500
High Elves have slaves. Read Gotrek & Felix.

Which isn't exactly slavery, but whatever.
>>

>>
>>53969620

>>
>>53969653
Any Bret children talented in magic are taken by the Fey Enchantress, which is Wood Elves.
Girls come back as adults trained as priests of the Lady, which are the Damsels. Boys are never seen again.
>>
>>53969680
I just assumed they got fed to the trees or something. A lot of the problem with Bretonnia's fluff was it was written in the 'let's grimdark everything' edition, and never got an update to make it reasonable.
>>
>>53969653

People have talked about it like it's canon, but I admit I haven't seen a source. Kinda wish that stolen boys got made into Grail Knights to infuse them with Lady power that kept them from becoming gibbering gates to Chaos, which also explains how Bretonnia doesn't run out of them if it's so hard to sip from the Grail.
>>
>>53970436
I like that idea. And it'd help with the legends of mysterious virtuous knights riding in from out of nowhere that no Bretonnian knows where he came from. They'd be weird, seem to not understand human society, and have just enough otherness to lead to humans wanting to keep away from them.

I would make them slightly different from Grail Knights though. Admittedly, with how rare grail knights are supposed to be, it's silly that you have whole units of them ready to die in droves for all kinds of stupid reasons. But I feel even if it is only a fluff standpoint that you'd want to be able to tell the difference between a Grail Knight that went through quests to earn his powers, and a Grail Knight raised from birth and gifted in magic to become one.

I'll actually need to think a little more on this for my WHFRP game.
>>
>>53970039
Defenders of the forest, I believe.
>>
>>53970513
I like how Knights of the Grail handles Grail Knights. Every single one is an incredible badass because they are actually quite rare.

Trying to imagine a unit of grail knights from WHFB the way they are represented in WFRP would turn them into a rape machine of a unit.
>>
>>53970572
It's a good difference in my opinion. Seeing how much bullshit you have to go through to drink from the Grail, I'd have restricted grail knights to heroes or officers. Or changed the fluff a bit.

>>53970525
Thank you, I'll read up on it, and if I find it take a screencap.

It is an interesting idea - what if the knight in pic related wasn't just lost and away from his own army, but raised in Athel Loren?

It also explains why Bretonnia never runs out when times are too grim or too many die trying on their quest - not every magic Bretonnian boy is going to end up a Grail Knight, mind, but it'll be enough to keep up a certain number, especially since they all live so long. And who's going to argue if they're weird? They're a Grail Knight - as far as Bretonnians are concerned, you cannot doubt their virtue, almost like how Damsels can go unquestioned. And it's not weird for them to not interact with others or spend a lot of time alone in a chapel.

I don't really know how you'd set them up as different, though - maybe the Grail Knights have been blessed with some sort of divine magic, regular holy stuff, but Grail Knights raised from magic-touched Bretonnian boys are more stretching their magical capabilities so that they're constantly tapping one or two winds of magic to give them the equivalent of the Lady's divine powers, probably Gyran or Asur. But the average Bretonnian probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference without some scrutiny, just like for some weird reason they can't tell that the fey and the Fey Enchantress are elves, despite that their fluff allows for regular Wood Elf raids, Dark Elf attacks, and some sort of interaction with High Elves.

>>53970813
Cannonballs have literally been observed to bounce off of Grail Knights. Artillery is no sure thing against them.
>>
>>53970703
I'm not sure how the two varieties of grail knight would be differentiated mechanically. Maybe there is no difference mechanically speaking, though I would enjoy toying with the idea a bit. Lore wise, I do like the idea of strange knights of the grail answering calls at times. Weirdos that don't like to talk, and when they do, speak slowly as if it was an unfamiliar language.

Since every grail knight is let in on the secret of the Lady (After going through onerous trials to prove they won't be a snitch), I imagine that they wouldn't be surprised by the strange lost boy knights and their habits, and could work with them just as well as their brothers in a lance formation. Just a reason for there to be more grail knights, and to add a certain legend how knights of old shall emerge from the woods to supplement the beleaguered forces of Bretonnia when disaster strikes.

It'd also help with the Lady's depiction instead of being needlessly cruel with abducting kids and keeping the boys for weird self serving purposes, at least the boys are being kept as a reserve force in times of need. Calculatingly cruel instead.

On the tabletop? Probably nothing. In the RPG, you could try to play with them using spells from the Colleges of Magic to buff themselves up instead of whatever Grail Knights get.

It's cruel if you think about it - she doesn't want male magic users in Bretonnia since that would take away from the power of her Damsels, but she still wants to make use of a valuable resource. So she kidnaps them all the same and raises them as knights - it's either Lancelot shit, or Janissary or Mameluke stuff. Either way it's a twisted sort of 'waste not want not' since she caused the 'waste' for her own ends.

>>53971096
Oh yeah, it's still unbelievably cruel keeping an entire culture spiritually vassalized for her own purposes, and stealing any infant of magical power in the night without warning or explanation. It's just that instead of "Girls be magic, and boys be mumblemumblesomethingsomethingneetelvesmagicshotasmumblemumble" it's, "Girls be magic, boys be a reserve of indoctrinated slave soldiers to call on when shit goes wrong." Making use of the boy children as nights is just a bit more practically evil rather than just wasting the boy babies on frivolous bullshit just because.

Also, I like to imagine that the battle pilgrims give the lost boy grail knights a wide berth and don't scavenge them for Grail Reliquae. Well honed peasant instincts from many generations.

I do wonder what "true" grail knights might think about their strange comrades, if they're unaware of the Lady's secret.

Anyway, I got a plot hook for my poor imperials tramping around Bordeleaux. Thank you.
>>
>>53971038
I tend to think that the Lady's blessings are way more likely to work when the Grail Knight is doing something particularly heroic - fighting a daemon by himself, covering a retreat, fighting a bunch of chaos fags while heavily outnumbered...

Some people/cultures wore their armour under outer garments. Herodotus includes a story where an important persian cavalry commander was stabbed multiple times by increasingly astonished greeks to no effect untill some greek realised that the persian wore scale armour beneath his fine robes.

They're alpha strike weapons, but bows quickly become better with multiple attacks.

Both are obviated later game because they're flat damage. I solved this myself by buffing up guns to do 2 more points of damage to 1d10+6. This - with Impact and AP - makes them relevant pretty much indefinitely. Bows I gave a STR-based damage modifier of 1d10+(SB-1), which makes them initially a bit weaker. I'm still mulling where to go with that houserule.

I will wipe you the fuck out with ballistic skill the likes of which has never been seen before in the Old World, mark my fucking words. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, child. Not only am I extensively trained in black-powder combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the Nuln Engineering school and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable arse off the face of the Old World, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. I already started building up the lore to my city-state.
The troops wear no armor because they're ranged only, if they get in melee then they deserved it. If they get shot back then plate won't hold against a bullet so why bother.
The melee soldiers are slaves that are promised freedom after 10 years of service, which results in them getting promoted to veteran soldiers that actually get paid for their duty and wear nice padded cloth armor. No training though, it's assumed that if they lasted that long they know how to fight. These are the halberdiers and swordmen while the slaves are all spearmen armed with cheap spears and hide shields.
I'll check it out and see what else I can use.

We're probably talking about a scenario that played out in seconds as the leader was bumrushed by foes trying to get to the kill. I'm not someone who have tried putting a spear through a person but I would presume that bone and metal have a somewhat similar feel to them when they deflect blows.
If not that then we are talking about an extremely superstitious people who faced a foe who's priests are the origin of the word mage. I mean if you refuse numerious time to perform a charge due to bad omens I see no reason why you wouldn't believe that the enemy's sorcerous priests would be capable to make their senior commanders impervious to mortal weapons.

>>53982192
Eeeeh, I'm not sure I'm a fan. This combines two stats into one, rather heavily hurting WS weps, especially since S progression is usually slower than WS and BS.

One I've been toying with in my own notes but haven't offered in place of the 1d10+SB-1 rule is 1d10+((.5*SB)+1), where you round fractions UP. Though it looks a confusing mess, it produces a flatter but steadily increasing damage curve that keeps archery nasty without nerfing the bow for average S chars in the 30s range (one half of 3 is 1.5, rounded up is 2, plus 1 is 3, so most moods will still be doing 1d10+3 with bows).

The Bretonnians basically fucked off after Jaffar was defeated - they didn't care for holding any territory or even taking much treasure, since they were more concerned about honor and chivalry. You might be able to argue a few might have stayed, but was really the Empire knights who stayed for any real length of time and left the most impact.

The Southlands thing I spoke of was a very, very brief mention in the Man O War rulebook of a Bretonnian captain having estates in the Southlands, with the name 'Villaneuve' being tossed out as where the ships had started from. Unfortunately I can't find a good-quality scan of the rulebook for the life of me, and it affects any screenshot I try to take of such fluff.

It's mentioned in the Empire army books and Sigmar's Heirs that Middenheim has two votes, one for the Elector Count and one for the Ar-Ulric. Middenheim and Altdorf are unique in that they're the only cities with more than one vote.
>>
>>53986636
Not sure - perhaps sometime before the succession of Marienburg from the Empire, since it's still considered the main port of their fleet instead of Nordland. Since the Empire is spoken of in terms that imply it's unified, it's probably after Magnus the Pious.

Of course, Man O' War itself is ridiculously old, and the timeline of such older fluff may not match the one we know today. It's like how early Gotrek and Felix stories mention a Sun King in Bretonnia.

Yeah definitely, I personally would go for units of 18 in a 6 X 7 formation but 12+ is fine.

If you do want to run them in 18's or 21's you can buy a top up pack of push fits.

I kind of like the fan canon (written by someone official?) that Giles and Aborash survived the destruction of the Warhammer World and guarded the slumbering remains of the greatest remaining warriors of Bretonnia as they drifted across the void of space in a huge Grail Chapel.

It is admittedly still a little dumb, but a lot better than what the End Times actually gave us.

>>53991916
But anon, there were only 13 Grail Companions. Why are you implying there was a 14th?
>>
>>53992699
That was a Black Library book that implied Abhorash was indebted to Gilles.

Gilles triumphant will be the 14 companion.

Okay, that's surprising. Of all the 90's shit to slip under the conversion radar, TMNT wasn't one I'd guess.

It's not entirely appropriate for the thread but there are a few companies that do turtle warriors. Fewer do the other characters.
Greebo has a compelete set of the 4 heroes in a halfshell, Splinter, Shredder and Bebop and Rocksteady.
They have a pretty distinct style to them though.

Nah, no interest at all in converting them, let alone buying them.

I'm just surprised I've never seen it before in my 18 years of Warhammer.

Night Gobbos don't make their own clothing since textile work requires a complex distribution of labor.

So why are they so uniform? Shouldn't their shit be the colors of what they looted, so mostly Dwarf pants and cloaks in blue and the colors of the Eight Peaks? Are they intentionally dying their shit and paying some extrordinarily focused Gobbos shitloads of teef to wear black and red?
>>

At best they're probably paying some gobbo to dump job their dyes.
>>
>>53993279
Beastmen are Broo ripoffs, right? Also Karl's nephew is a mutant who isn't evil?

So maybe Splinter was born to Tilean merchants who raised him and taught him to sneak, and he adopted turtle Beastmen and made them pizza while teaching them the ways of Nippon that he learned by observing and fighting against Skaven.

I dunno. Otherwise they just came from another dimension through the Warp. The Turtles do shit like that a lot. That's how they got so many crossovers.
>>
>>53993358
I think the Empire is the only nearby place to get bulk black cloth, and that's a LONG way away. Not to mention mixed in stripes and plaits with white and red.
>>
>>53993332

You don't need a complex distribution of labour to make cotton anon, people have made it for thousands of years. They were just cottage industries.

If they can forge weapons they can make cotton.
>>
>>53993332
Gobbos are generally known for doing all the busywork for the orcs. No reason they can't be industrious.

Maybe they make their robes out of spider silk.

Since when? People have been making clothing in their households for centuries in the real world, and cottage industries were always a thing. You get runtier gobbos and snotlings to do most of the dirty work, or have everyone make their own clothes or steal 'em. And there's probably plenty of black sticky things they can use to crudely dye cloth or squigskin down in the deep dark caves. Maybe it's just black dirt. Maybe it's mushroom juice. Could be tar or oil.

It's the same sort of problems of logic you run into when you try and figure out how Beastmen can have metal weapons and armor when they shun all civilized trappings and obviously won't have anything like a blacksmith. It gets to the point where you have to headcanon, or just not think about it because there's no way it could make sense.

I'm really concerned about how Nagash isn't anywhere on that list. I get that Zacharias is cool, but Nagash invented the whole concept of necromancy - boot his ass and put the original Liche up there.

And I know Greasus Goldtooth is pretty awesome by Ogre standards, but he's not an amazing leader or commander by the standards of the whole setting. He's just managed to bully others. I'd rather see Malekith in his spot.

Not to bully the poor Bretonnians, but I can't see Louen as a great melee fighter. He's good and all, but never a top five of the setting - there's gotta be someone tougher. Maybe a great leader, but the Bretonnian system is so feudalized he doesn't do all that much as a king aside from take charge of his own domains - he's just and wise, sure, but I can't hold him up next to Franz or Finubar or Settra.

Kroak is the greatest caster, he's technically dead and can't use spell lores any more, but he's still ridiculously powerful even in death. Mazdamundi is the greatest living caster, closely followed by Teclis, followed by Nagash. After that I'd place strong Tzeentchian disciples and Lords of Change such as Kairos Fateweaver.

Well, that's from Mordheim.
Wyrdstone was basically thought of as the philosopher's stone that could transmute lead into gold and grant eternal life but could do bad things too.
