So I've been working on a novel for a while now and it's coming along fairly well now. For the purpose of helping with my own work (since it's a sprawling setting) and for possible publication purpose, I'd like to teach myself how to make somewhat realistic world maps (It's a hardish sci-fi set on another planet.)
I was wondering if any of you with experience in map making could direct me towards the necessary resources, programs or otherwise tutorials.
Personal experience would also be appreciated.
Download GIMP and google "Making a fantasy map in GIMP"
What's your book about?

It's a hard-ish sci-fi.
Set on a far flung world decades after a bloody civil war forced the last emperor to abdicate.
Basically. A rickety and dysfunctional pseudo-federation has replaced the Empire. There's still an aristocracy in place but the rebels have also established their own popular republic's. They're all nominally allied but the only thing keeping all parties from going at it is the threat of being overtaken by Earth and losing their independence.
It's kinda cyber-punk film noir with the main character's father having strong shades of Charles II while the MC himself is afflicted by cerebral Palsy.
what's the most ridiculous trap you've managed to pull off in a dungeon?
also: favorite Grimtooth trap?
I have this one saved on my computer from a long while ago
I don't remember the exact details of how it works, but just looking at this makes me wonder what kind of insane person would devise this kind of thing
definitely finding a way to put it in my next dungeon crawl
My best ever trap that freaked players out was this.
A large box, there is a wooden stick holding it up and a thick rope tied around it. The rope trails to the door that you just came through.
On the box is written in duergar is written dwarf trap. Under the box appares to be a small barrel of ale.
I like the concept of this one because of how it messes with players
>fighter: I lead the way through the hall
>dm: alright, well your passive perception isn't enough to notice the pressure plate in front of you until you hear the click of it under your foot
>fighter: aw shit
>dm: everyone watches as the fighter gets flung up into the air by a springboard under the pressure plate, you take X damage
>wizard: sucks to suck, that's why we leave the fighter in the front
>dm: wizard, your superior elven hearing picks up another loud "click" as the fighter's head slams into the ceiling, followed by the sound of swinging hinges and a sudden movement behind you, make a dex save
>wizard: fuck
>dm: a panel from the ceiling behind you swings down and slams into your back, you feel spikes ripping through your robes and you take X damage
>cleric: come on guys, you're gonna make me waste all my healing spells!
>dm: cleric, you barely have time to react after the panel swings down, because out of the new found gap in the ceiling tiles, a gigantic lead ball rolls out and is set to land right on you, make a save

We'll create a 3 set block based around the idea of 4chan becoming a plane in Magic the Gathering. The blocks are seperated as a timeline based off of early 4chan to present, and famous 4chan users as legendary creatures and planeswalkers.
Here are the base mechanics we decided to keep:
>Bait
>You may pay this creature's bait cost to change the target of a spell or ability that targets a creature to this creature.
>Meme
>Target ___ or a spell on the stack. That card and copies of it become Y.
>Spoiler
>You may play this card face down for (2), as a 2/2 vanilla creature. When it blocks or becomes blocked, or becomes the target of a spell or ability your opponents control, turn it
>Implying X
>You may cast this card for its Implying cost if your opponent has played a card this turn with the same CMC
>Digits
>You get Digit counters depending on specific conditions on each card, for example:
>This card gets Digits if you use mana of three different colors to cast it
>This card gets Digits if your opponent controls at least two other creatures
>Shitpost
>at X point, shitpost N (create N 1/1 colourless shitpost creature tokens)
Gonna post the to-do list soon.
>From Thread 2
>For accurate links go to Thread 2 in the OP.
We have a WIP Structure/Skeleton we're supposed to create. We need to see what kind of block we want to accomplish with the guidelines posted above.
These are all pending ideas.

Now we're ready to build the archetypes of ancient 4chan, when pepe and wojak still weren't around. For example
WU: Classic Control
UB: Implying/Bait and other shenanigans
BR: Classic Rakdos-Like stuff
RG: Shitposting Trolls
GW: Token Swarm
WR: Boros-Like Stuff
UG: Tempo
BW: Stealing stuff
UR: Changing the gameplay itself
GB: Usual graveyard business
>List of Standard MechanicsShould've put this up top.
OFFICIAL SYNTAX:
Bait <cost>
If target spell or ability your opponents control targets another creature you control, change its target to this creature.
Meme
Starting with your next opponent, that player may pay mana equal this card’s converted mana cost. If they do, they copy this spell, and they repeat this process. They may choose new targets for the copy.
Spoiler
You may cast this card face down as a 2/2 creature for {2}. When it blocks or becomes blocked, or when it is targeted by a spell or ability that your opponents control, turn it face up.
Implying <cost>
Whenever an opponent casts a spell with a converted mana cost equal to this card, you may cast this card by paying its implying cost.
Digits
They are supported as player-based counters like experience! Build cards around increasing, manipulating and using these if you'd like!
Shitpost
shitpost <number> — Create
<number> 1/1 colorless Shitpost
creature tokens.
Use as an action inside rules text, ie "When you draw a card, shitpost 1."

Form up men! I don't want to see a single foot out of line!
Men! I hope that your recent shore leave upon Neveda Prime went well. God-Emperor knows it didn't for me... However it went; I am proud to inform you all that we have recently been given new orders. Isn't that exciting?
The God-Emperor has seen us fit to intercept a distress call from a local Mechanicum Explorator fleet, near our current location. As we are currently the closest, and only ship in the area. We are being sent to investigate what's going on, as unfortunately, no one aboard our ship has been able to decipher the encryption of the message.
As such, it is our sworn and sacred duty, to blindly follow after them, and attempt to aid our mechanicum brothers in arms.
So, while we await the ship to transition out from the Warp, I am calling for a mandatory field kit inspection!
As such, all hands present are to present arms and equipment, for a Field Kit Inspection!
>Welcome to ''Field Kit Inspection", home of the 'Unknown Regiment". Feel free to join in! Remember though, we tend to use spoilers for OOC chat, while greentexts for are used for describing a character's actions. D20s are for combat checks and d100s for other things you wish to roll, with higher being better.

can't really speak for the core book by itself because my DM uses almost all official books there are and tinkers with them since he's somewhat of a /k/fag
it's a nice system with distinct setting, I like it
>>54729197
Well, to make long story short, I GMed it for a group of pals. We had a few short runs and one super long campaign that span over nearly 3 years, and we played 2-3 times a week.
It's fun, but mechanics are asinine. If you and your group can settle to some homebrewing, go for it. If you wanna go 100% by the book, you're royally fucked even before you started.I have all the PDFs, but it's in Polish.
Interested?
>>54729294
Yeah, I'm fine with taking a century to translate, I have some slav friends so life isn't to bad.
What's wrong with the mechanics?
How would you do an athro setting without falling into magical realm or the other usual furry trappings?
https://youtu.be/UbQgXeY_zi4
You can't.
>>54728627
Sure you can. Just fade to black if/when you have to and make it clear that any dipshit walking around with neon fur is going to be treated like the dumbass ganger/hippie/snowflake everyone thinks they are.
Mouse Guard?
Would a necromancer that only summons spirits be viable way to play?
Would they still be considered evil?
>>54728214
>summon up the restless dead
>not evil
Yes.
Yes.
Why are people so fixated on figuring out how to make necromancers not evil?
Isn't it more fun to figure out how to make them MORE evil?
Like trapping the person's soul into the zombie shell, and letting them speak and say things like "It's alright, son, I won't hurt you," before wresting control from them and forcing them to kill and eat their loved ones?
Necromancy is pretty much always evil, you enlist either the souls of the dead who were resting to do your bidding, or you raise the dead bodies of previously loved ones and make a mockery of them while they do your bidding, also its fucking unsanitary you heathen.

Even if we do suvive the initial invasion, we would have to learn to live with the everpresent threat of feral orks.
But most likely we'll lose and become enslaved

Welcome to the thread for d20 station, a rules light, medium RP Space Station 13 server.
>What is Space Station 13?
It's a 2D top down atmospherics simulator with who dun it gameplay layered on top. Each crew member aboard the station has a specific job to perform, while a select few are selected to be traitors (assassin/spy/thief).
>Why is this on muh /tg/?
d20 is a server made for fa/tg/uys by fa/tg/uys
>How do I play?
You'll need to download the BYOND client.

>I'm new, and I don't know what the fuck to do. How do I swap hands?
Use OOC (backspace say" in the bottom, type OOC and hit enter, or: http://i.imgur.com/RodAGGZ.png), which means Out Of Character chat, and ask someone for help on how to play. People will almost always help you get a grip of the game if you're polite about it, just don't reveal too much in-round information in OOC.
There's also wikis dedicated to documenting the spaceman way of life, but they vary widely from server to server.
>What are the rules?
The rules are very relaxed and admins try to take a hands-off approach to administrating. Admins will generally only intervene if someone is explicitly playing to ruin the game. Reminder to read the rules in-game.
>What map/code do you run?
We run a heavily modified Ministation map with mostly custom code. Most jobs on Ministation are merged with similar counterparts and head roles have been re-enabled.
>When does everyone play?
The server only recently came back, so peak times will vary heavily for the time being.
>Who are these tripfags?
Usually admins/coders for the server
