Does anyone else feel that chess is just beyond them? I do well in mathematics (Engineering Senior) and science, but I can't read into what the opponent is doing? I've read many primers and methods, but I just cannot play with proficiency. I played my chess app on the lowest difficulty for a month, 10 times daily, and when I raised it from the intro level to a 750 ELO, I have been getting fucked daily for two months.

I thrive in Tetris and Blackjack, what's fucking me up here? Does Asperger's mess my game up?

stop playing against computers
the strong ones are too strong, the weak ones are just retarded and will play perfectly for a few moves and then just randomly make a mistake

get comfortable with opening principles and practice some basic tactics and you should see a marked improvement in no time

at it's core chess is still a game of attacking and capturing material
kids understand this intuitively and that's why they can play so well so soon, they love nothing more than making threats and munching up pawns and pieces

like anything you have to master the basics before you start layering strategy and more advanced concepts

i was just like you for awhile, then it just kinda clicked with me. I'm not great, but I'm around the 1300 ELO range.
I can give you some pointers if you want, Chess is always easier to learn if you have someone helping person to person
>>
I'd like to think I'm decent at Chess but I'm probably not.

My mind is just too weak to be able to predict people's moves in advance. I've read good players can think several moves ahead. What does that mean anyway? That they calculate for almost every move the other person will make for up to, say, 7 turns? If so I'm too stupid for that.

You are Urist Twelfthbay, the moe personification of Dwarf Fortress. In an ideal universe, you'd be a short, sturdy (and bearded) creature fond of drink and industry, running your own fortresses and basing their economies around increasingly inventive ways to murder anything and anyone that moves.

Instead, you live in Gamindustri, so you're a cute little girl. Right now, you're trapped in the body of a cute bikini-clad goddess, one that doesn't even have the decency to have night vision or crippling alcoholism. There really is no justice in the universe.

... though honestly, you really can't complain, can you? Not when you've got a glitching giant cave spider pinned to the cavern floor, CPU Purple Heart's ridiculous divine sword punching through void-hardened chitin and stone with disturbing ease.

Used to be that you couldn't even touch any of the damn spiders in melee; they'd just vomit webs at you and inject neurotoxins directly into your fucking head while you were sprawled out against the ground. And here you are, one leg propped up on the spider's body, with your boot grinding against the ruins of its head like it's no big deal.

Combat's a hell of a lot easier when you've got the power of flight, and when you've got another goddess of all things Sega (among other people) giving you backup, isn't it?

"Whew... everyone okay?" Mojang slides off her ledge and hits the ground jogging, not putting away her bow or arrows. As usual, she briefly glances toward Neptune (in your body) before blushing and turning to address you (in Neptune's body). Force of habit, you suppose. "Oneechan, that should be enough, right?"

Should be. You twist the sword again, just to make sure, before prodding the damn spider with your toe. Despite the grievous sword-inflicted wounds, the arrows sticking out from the monster's ruined eyes, and even the odd crossbow bolt feathering its abdomen, the giant cave spider is /still/ twitching, fitfully trying to regenerate.

... jeez. Void corruption's a hell of a drug.

The long-haired Mini-Nep- the yin to Neptune's yang, you suppose- lands a moment later and copies you step-by-step, stabbing the spider with her own gunblade before prodding it with her foot. Apparently, that's the straw that breaks the camel's back; the monster gives a truly horrible death rattle before giving up the ghost, stiffening legs curling in toward its stomach. "Is... is this normal?" Mini-Nep asks, looking considerably grossed out. "I mean, do these kinds of monsters always come out in caves?"

"Only Oneechan's caves!" Mojang replies, giving her a reassuring(?) smile. "But don't worry, we'll be just fine if we stay on our guard!"

"Exactly! And besides-" Neptune pauses to take a long draft from your flask of booze, slaking her (your) dwarven body's never-ending thirst. Under any other circumstances, you'd be distinctly worried to see a goddess hitting the bottle so hard, but right now, you're just green-eyed jealous. "- that's our token boss battle for this visit. We won't see another one until after we leave the cavern. I guarantee it!"

... Mojang averts her eyes. You quickly pull the silk webs back up over Neptune's shoulder, before giving up and just hurling more stray webs onto her body. The moment you get up there, you're shoving her dumb ass into a set of good armor, and that's that.

"Don't worry, don't worry! I'm sure a whole bunch of mysterious light beams'll cover up any wardrobe malfunctions, so-"

That is NOT reassuring, goddammit!

(Cont.)
>>
>>46168250
Before too long- and before you lose any more sanity- Mojang and Neptune continue mining out the rest of the Seganium, while you and Mini-Nep patrol from the air. You /need/ that damn ore out as soon as possible, which is- in turn- because you want your body back as fast as possible.

You frown thoughtfully, trying to spot any movement among the underground trees and colorful mosses. Other than the rapidly-disappearing spider corpse (which is weird, in and of itself), there's literally nothing else around. Since it /seems/ safe, you could spend some time poking around; there's that breach to the next level, for one thing. For another, there's the matter of your missing party member.

Come to think of it, you were honestly surprised that Doomgirl wasn't the cause of all those explosions earlier; you didn't spot her in the fortress's upper levels, and you sure as hell don't see her down /here/. Not yet, at least. If Therapist wasn't all but unusable, you could just ping for Doomgirl's location. As it is, you've got too much weird static-y interference going on, probably due to this whole body-switching thing and because your abilities weren't meant to be used from the /outside/ of your body.

(Cont.)
>>
>>46168273
On the other OTHER hand, she's a big girl, and she's more than capable of taking care of herself, despite her rampant insanity. Maybe you ought to pay more attention to your /other/ surrogate little sister, Mini-Nep- or just, y'know, postpone all this idle chitchat until /after/ you get your own body back.

[ ] [START PACKING SEGANIUM] Seriously, you and Mini-Nep aren't doing anything right now; since Mojang has limited inventory space and Neptune doesn't know how to access yours, you might as well get a move on. (TIMESKIP)
[ ] [INSPECT THE SPIDER'S BODY] for clues before it disappears completely. Maybe there's something in there that can give you clues about how to prevent this whole void corruption thing from seeping into your caverns.
[ ] [INSPECT THE CAVERNS] Take a closer look at your surroundings. Might as well see what the breach down to the second cavern level looks like, or try and find that bird-man fluttering around your fort. Also, Doomgirl's been missing for a while, huh?
[ ] [CHAT UP YOUR ALLIES] Might as well keep an eye on Neptune's progress, and see if Mojang or Mini-Nep have any thoughts about whatever it is that's going on.

Does anyone have some great silly one-shot campaign ideas that they want to try out, or are looking for players interested in trying them out? I've got a couple of ones that might be interesting to try out with a party or need a bit of fleshing out if /tg/ has any ideas.

"Barnstormers of the Navy Field": A military commander turned plantation owner has come into the ownership of an old wizard's spellbook focusing on lifeshaping, and has begun "tweaking" the local fauna and flora of his agrarian community to maximize output of food. The townspeople are starting to worry, since his experiments haven't stopped, and the old military leader has been rumored to murmur aloud about wanting the southern kingdoms to rise again. The party are tasked with seeing just what foul witchery is afoot on the Plantation of Commodore Sain'Darr, and just what on earth he could need with all of the townfolk's chickens.

I've always wanted to run a Hitchhikers game for a few sessions. The old radio series/tv series, not the film. Doesn't require a lot of prep for it either, just a basic outline etc and a good ability to think on the fly.

Closest I got was playing with a master GM who is part of my RPG community. He's an old guy but he ran Paranoia perfectly, it felt very BBC Sci-Fi.

The rules are simple: we all contribute one or multiple ideas to collectively create the grimmest grimderp setting the world has ever seen. I'll start.

>The peasants are forced to work the land all day, only getting six hours of rest to eat and sleep. Those who die on the job are used as fertilizer.
>When the nobility thinks the land isn't fertile enough, they start "who can kill the most peasants" competition. Traditionally this is done from horseback with sword and lance but in recent years canons have become a popular alternative since the impact of the canonballs also tills the land.

All rain is acid rain. That ruins the water and the land. Which, in turns, make the "who can kill more peasants" tournament (fertility festival? ) more frequent.

So in all these reviews of FATAL I hear it called stuff like "The Date Rape RPG without the Dating" and "rape simulation" so I came in with high expectations that this could cover the mechanics of something that games simply don't touch.

Consensual sex gets addressed in fan works like Book of Erotic Arts for D20 or the "GURPS Sex" manual, but neither touch rape. Which is silly because if anything can be hand-waived into "just co-operatively describe this with flavor text" it's consensual things.

Rules are designed for resolving differences in intent and with all the rules we have for assault (even if grappling is often a more confusing issue than striking) having ones for sexual assault would make sense.

"Rape is not intended to be a core element of F.A.T.A.L." on page 7 is completely accurate here. If it were actually a core element it would actually have some decent rules.

For all the focus on the rape-y atmosphere of the game, it feels like reviewers really have not focused on just how little exploration the act has. So little that it is incredibly disappointing.

In 2000 the rules appear on page 342 of "Fantasy Adventure To Adult Lechery"

In 2004 the rules appear on page 398 "From Another Time, Another Land".

In either case they are easily found searching "Rape roll", a term which occurs 5 times in 1 paragraph and a 6th time in the one after.

All these fall under a skill called "Overbearing", a Wrestling skill which is basically pinning a foe who's been taken down or otherwise on the ground.

Although Overbear is essentially number 12 and Brawling 13, Rape is essentially a whole other ability which occurs only after a successful overbear, so I guess you could call it 12.5

>>
So basically, you make a roll and have to beat a 'Weight Difference' check.

Which makes no sense to me because if you have 2 targets each 300lbs, it should be harder to grapple the one who is 10% bodyfat than the one who is 50% bodyfat, more muscle more force. A stronger target could buck you off or pull you off more effectively.

Passing an intimidation check doubles the weight difference you roll against, fair enough. Someone who feels defeated and overwhelmed wouldn't be able to struggle as hard since they would lack confidence.

The "weight difference" you roll against refers to Overbearing, which doesn't even allow the maneuver to happen unless the top target weighs more than the bottom target.

This effectively means that a 200 pound man cannot rape a 200 pound woman in FATAL, she has to be 199 or below.

Aside from the difference-doubling from intimidation, there's penalties for either party wearing clothing... and that's it. Nothing for strength, perception, agility...

>having high expectations

How could you possibly go so far wrong?
>>
>>46164372
>If it were actually a core element it would actually have some decent rules.

Counterargument: NONE of the rules in FATAL are decent or even approaching "usable," so what is and isn't the core focus has to be taken relatively.

And relatively, the rape rules are the core focus, in that their rules function at all, handily dominate other sub-systems like combat.

So I'm a big fan of Wyndham's Day of the Triffids. I want to run a game starting with the Blinding with the players running a group of survivors and trying to keep going. However I'm not sure how to prevent early encounters with Triffids (before the players become paranoid) without resulting in one or two player kills. At the moment I'm considering letting players have tag along companions or multiple characters but it seems forced or cumbersome. Any ideas?

>>
Have everybody make 3-4 characters, and then as they get killed, new survivors show up.
>>
Firstly, glad to see another fan. I love Day of the Triffids, and Wyndham's work altogether.

I would just orchestrate some close encounters with Triffids scripted for them to barely succeed, maybe even with an injury of some kind.

It'll help set the mood of the triffid creatures.

Also, I wouldn't base too much of the story on protecting the blind survivors, like the book. Perhaps include that as a mission for a while, but diversify
>>
Perhaps diversify with your triffids, make differant breeds so the party has to think about what they are facing instead of the same plant again and again.

Streamlined simple retroclones, like LotFP
Barbarians of Lemuria
Torchbearer
Also b/x and becmi DnD are actually pretty simple, it's oDnD and AD&D (particularly 2nd ed) that have the clunky stuff.
